Book excerpt: There is now increasing awareness by the general public in European countries that prostate cancer is a serious threat to health, and this has created higher expectations for improved and more effective methods for detecting and treating the disease. However, urologists are very conscious of the limitations of the diagnostic methods that are available and are even more concerned about the apparent lack of therapeutic advances made during the past 50 years since Huggins discovered the fundamental principles of endocrine treatment for is theo prostate cancer. Recent efforts to detect the disease when it retically "curable" have been successful, certainly in the USA, but this has highlighted our uncertainty about the best treatment for early stage prostate cancer, and there is no doubt that radical pro statectomy is sometimes carried out on men who may not be threa tened by their illness. While it is generally accepted that many men with prostate cancer will die of old age rather than this malignancy, it cannot be ignored that this disease kills many others in a process that is frequently lingering, miserable, and humiliating, not only for the victim but also his family. There are many important issues about prostate cancer that remain unclear at the present time, some of which are addressed by the reviews in this book. The debate about early detection and screening can arouse considerable heat in otherwise placid urological mee tings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book effectively summarizes our knowledge of recent advances in prostate cancer. It focuses on our state-of-the-art understanding of risk factors, prevention, detection, prognosis and treatment of prostate cancer and identifies basic science findings that are being translated into clinical practice. In addition, the book singles out key areas of research that have potential for clinical translation. Both basic scientists and clinicians will be invited to provide up-to-date reviews in each area of prostate cancer. During the last decade the pace of clinical discovery and the scientific advances in prostate cancer have been very rapid. For instance, currently there are more than 100 drugs in the pharmaceutical pipeline that have the potential for clinical management of prostate cancer. Therefore, it has been very difficult for clinicians and basic scientists to keep pace with the field as a whole. Recently, some of these discoveries are already having an impact on clinical practice. For example, the discovery of the androgen receptor gene amplification in prostate cancer has led to the development of a OC super-antiandrogenOCO, which is being tested in clinical trials. Also, recent knowledge of androgen synthesis in prostate cancer cells has led to clinical trials with steroid-metabolism inhibitors. Finally, robotic surgery has also dramatically changed clinical practice. Thus, this important book serves to provide readers with a one-stop overview of the field of prostate cancer research and its translation into the clinical arena."

Book excerpt: Prostate cancer is the most frequent genitourinary malignancy that garners significant medical and media attention. Over the past decade significant new discoveries have been made that have enabled substantial improvements in screening, diagnosis and management of this disease. Importantly, there has been constant evolution of the best way to treat these patients. This text will provide a single, comprehensive reference source that incorporates all the latest information regarding prostate cancer. It will serve as an easy reference source for researchers, clinicians, individuals in training, allied health professionals and medical students regarding prostate cancer by focusing on the controversial points of debate. New data regarding PSA screening, prostate cancer biomarkers, diagnostic evaluation techniques, surveillance protocols, and treatment interventions for localized and more advanced disease will be discussed. Gaps in current knowledge and areas for future research will be highlighted. Ongoing important clinical trials which could imminently yield significant new knowledge will be discussed. Uniquely to all of the above will be the clinical scenario-based format of this text. For the practicing physician, the prostate cancer screening and treatment situations will hopefully become better understood. We will incorporate key educational concepts in the framework of patient situations with evidence-based discussions of screening, diagnosis, evaluation, and therapeutic management. All chapters will be authored by experts in their respective fields and incorporate original figures and illustrations to the extent possible. We anticipate that this book will quickly become the ready reference source for professionals and students in various fields with an interest in the management of a complex and multifaceted disease such as prostate cancer. The book will be comprehensive and encompass the entire the spectrum of prostate cancer. The information will be presented in a succinct and easily understandable manner so as to appeal to both scientists and clinicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent cancer among women worldwide, and infection with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) has been identified as the causal agent for this condition. The natural history of cervical cancer is characterized by slow disease progression, rendering the condition, in essence, preventable and even treatable when diagnosed in early stages. Pap smear and the recently introduced prophylactic vaccines are the most prominent prevention options, but despite the availability of these primary and secondary screening tools, the global burden of disease is unfortunately still very high. This book will focus on the clinical aspects of HPV and related disease, highlighting the latest developments in this field.
