This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2021 in the subject Economy - Environment economics, grade: 1,3, The FOM University of Applied Sciences, Hamburg, language: English, abstract: The objective of this assignment is to research charging infrastructure requirements, that potentially increase the demand for electric vehicles. The scope of this work will be limited to the German market, except for the overview of the e-Mobility market development. To examine the objective a secondary research of current literature, statistical reports, media and regulations will be performed. First of all, the author will present theoretical foundations to better understand the subsequent chapters, following by an overview of the global e-Mobility market development. Hereafter, the components of charging infrastructure are examined and the current challenges regarding market penetration, following an in-depth research of the charging infrastructure requirements to increase the demand for electric vehicles. Finally, the author will summarize her conclusion and outlook. Climate change, new technologies and less dependence on fossil fuels are major drivers for the development of electric mobility. Electric mobility produces much less CO2, especially when operated using renewable based electricity and therefore seen as key element of the energy transition towards a CO2 neutral environment. In addition, the batteries of electric vehicles (EV) can be used as energy storage to offset fluctuations in solar and wind power. Thus, electric vehicles foster the market integration and expansion of these volatile energy sources. To support and promote research and development of electric vehicles the Federal Government has adopted a set of measures, e.g., the extension of charging infrastructure. The German Government set ambitious goals for the German charging infrastructure. In order to reach this goal, customers must be convinced that an EV is better than the conventional motor type cars. Slowly, but electric vehicles become more visible nowadays. The major current challenges still pose the range of batteries and the charging management. Through digitalization of traffic systems and the increasing automation of mobility in form of autonomous driving cars, the change will be further accelerated.

Book excerpt: This book defines and charts the barriers and future of vehicle-to-grid technology: a technology that could dramatically reduce emissions, create revenue, and accelerate the adoption of battery electric cars. This technology connects the electric power grid and the transportation system in ways that will enable electric vehicles to store renewable energy and offer valuable services to the electricity grid and its markets. To understand the complex features of this emergent technology, the authors explore the current status and prospect of vehicle-to-grid, and detail the sociotechnical barriers that may impede its fruitful deployment. The book concludes with a policy roadmap to advise decision-makers on how to optimally implement vehicle-to-grid and capture its benefits to society while attempting to avoid the impediments discussed earlier in the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 2,0, University of applied sciences, Munich, course: Economics, language: English, abstract: Main drivers for the discussion of electromobility are the depletion of world’s oil resources and the evolving discussion of climate protection. Stricter CO2 regulations for all developed markets put a high pressure on the automotive industry. Automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEMs) are forced to transport a green image and claim the top position in terms of technological leadership. Future challenges can only be met by cooperation of different industries and politics. Political support and subsidies can speed up the introduction of electromobility. New competences are needed and production depth moves from the OEMs to suppliers. As long as fossil resources in particular coal play the predominant role in energy production the contribution of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) to CO2 reduction is low. Access to limited resources such as Lithium and rare earth will be critical and probably establish future dependencies. Manufacturing costs and total cost of ownership (TCO) will remain higher for an electric vehicle (EV) in the foreseeable future. Customers believe in the future of EVs but are not ready to pay higher prices. The estimated market share of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and BEVs will not exceed 20% in 2025.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing global awareness of the environmental impacts of combustion is accelerating electric vehicles (EVs) adoption. However, future sustainable mobility cannot be achieved without substantial changes in vehicle technology, consumer behavior, infrastructure systems, and policy. Great impacts and uncertainties are anticipated during the transition towards electric mobility. This thesis examines key areas of interest such as battery techno-economic characteristics, EV recharging ecosystem, dynamics behind the market evolution, the prospects and challenges for the transition to electrification, and the impacts of evolving EV policies. For example, given that the battery prices have been dropping rapidly in the past several years, a recurring question is how much lower battery prices can be expected to go. Greater production volumes and improvements in manufacturing efficiency will drive down costs, but the prices will eventually stabilize as they get closer to the cost of the materials they are made of. A 2-stage learning curve model is developed to investigate how the essential materials, especially expensive elements (lithium, nickel and cobalt) used in current battery technologies, will constrain the declining trajectory of production costs and set practical lower bounds on battery prices. Another big uncertainty surrounding EVs is whether they could really create a cleaner planet. EVs avoid tailpipe emissions of CO2 and air pollutants from fossil fuel combustion but may lead to greater emissions from the upstream stage of electricity generation, especially in the world’s largest EV market, China, where coal-fired power generation has been the backbone of the electricity supply. The current lifecycle emissions comparison for vehicles with different powertrains is presented and how China’s sustainable mobility policy will affect future climate change, air quality, and public health is also explored. This thesis provides information that will help stakeholders anticipate and navigate some of the changes that lie ahead owing to a policy-driven shift from liquid fuels to electrification. The evaluation focuses mostly on private passenger vehicle sector, which in part reflects a recognition that this is the segment that is likely to be responding most proactively to the developments in advanced powertrains, alternative fuels, and environmental policies.
