Book Synopsis Prose, Photos and Poems by : George G A Wensley
Download or read book Prose, Photos and Poems written by George G A Wensley and published by Author House. This book was released on 2012-11-26 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prose, Photos and Poems This is a compendium of short stories, poems and memoirs, of a writer learning his craft. It is peppered with photographs as he is interested in the visual world. Poetry is important to his work as it makes you think and wring out everything you possibly can from a word, and to be able to manipulate the elements of the story. Madam Clich is about the writers love of the sound of the word Clich and his regret at its meaning and function. Places and travel are important to the writer. Places become characters in his writing. Dreamlands is about a visit he made to Margate and the Turner Gallery, it is modelled on The Waste Land by TS Elliot and was one of the pieces that got the writer a Certificate in Creative writing. Venice in the Rain is about a trip the writer made to Venice while researching for his Rialto Trilogy. He wrote stuff down as he walked through the landscape and it is just as much about memory as it is about the place. The photography was done on his camera that was inherited from his father who was a member of the Royal Photographic Society and has been to symposiums at Fox Talbots House and has replicated the smoking mirrors experiment. The writer believes that photography is about the pictures you dont make. The writer likes to call this sort of work Moodalogues.

Book Synopsis Living Pictures by : Polina Barskova
Download or read book Living Pictures written by Polina Barskova and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A poignant collection of short pieces about the author's hometown, St. Petersburg, Russia, and the siege of Leningrad that combines memoir, history, and fiction. Living Pictures refers to the parlor game of tableaux vivants, in which people dress up in costume to bring scenes from history back to life. It’s a game about survival, in a sense, and what it means to be a survivor is the question that Polina Barskova explores in the scintillating literary amalgam of Living Pictures. Barskova, one of the most admired and controversial figures in a new generation of Russian writers, first made her name as a poet; she is also known as a scholar of the catastrophic siege of Leningrad in World War II. In Living Pictures, Barskova writes with caustic humor and wild invention about traumas past and present, historical and autobiographical, exploring how we cope with experiences that defy comprehension. She writes about her relationships with her adoptive father and her birth father; about sex, wanted and unwanted; about the death of a lover; about Turner and Picasso; and, in the final piece, she mines the historical record in a chamber drama about two lovers sheltering in the Hermitage Museum during the siege of Leningrad who slowly, operatically, hopelessly, stage their own deaths. Living Pictures introduces a startlingly daring and original new voice from world literature.

Book Synopsis The Killing Art by : Jonathan Santlofer
Download or read book The Killing Art written by Jonathan Santlofer and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History and fiction collide with deadly consequences in the third Kate McKinnon novel—a story of bitter revenge, where the past invades the present and a decades-old secret proves fatal Kate McKinnon has lived many lives, from Queens cop to Manhattan socialite, television art historian, and the woman who helped the NYPD capture the Death Artist and the Color Blind killer. But that's the past. Now, devastated by the death of her husband, Kate is attempting to quietly rebuild her life as a single woman. Gone are the Park Avenue penthouse and designer clothes. Now it's a funky Chelsea loft, downtown fashion, and even a hip new haircut as Kate plunges back into her work—writing a book about America's most celebrated artistic era, the New York School of the 1940s and '50s, a circle that included Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko. But when a lunatic starts slashing the very paintings she is writing about—along with their owners—Kate is once again tapped by the NYPD. As she deciphers the evidence—cryptic images that reveal both the paintings and the people who will be the next targets—Kate is drawn into a world where art and art history provide lethal clues. The Killing Art is Jonathan Santlofer's most gripping and chilling story yet, but that isn't the only reason the novel is remarkable. The author, who is also an acclaimed artist, has created works of art just for the book that tantalize and challenge readers by using well-known symbols in innovative ways, allowing them to decode the clues along with Kate. A masterwork of both suspense fiction and art, The Killing Art will impress both thriller readers and art fans as the plot twists and turns toward a shocking climax.
