Book excerpt: "Prophetic Patterns in the Bible" takes an in-depth look at the cultural, political, and environmental trends that have clearly and consistently repeated themselves throughout biblical history...trends that gives credence to the idea that all things repeat themselves. Exploring the biblical account of man's ancient and mysterious past using science, archeology, and word study; pointing out theological views withheld from many seminarians and Bible college students; pulling directly from today's world headlines which directly correlates with biblical prophecy; and pointing out the "shocking" parallels between the past, present, and future from an eschatological and historical standpoint; this book is sure to engage both prophecy lovers and Bible readers. Come and discover what Solomon meant when he said, "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun" (Ecclesiastes 1:9 NIV).

They saw themselves as being a part of a story that God was weaving throughout history--a story of repentance, encouragement, and a coming Messiah. In this updated introductory book, each major and minor prophet and his writing are clustered with the major historical events of their time. Our generational distance from the age of the prophets might seem to be a measureless chasm. Yet we dare not make the mistake of assuming that passing years have rendered irrelevant not only the Old Testament prophets, but also the God who comprehends, spans, and transcends all time. In these pages, C. Hassell Bullock presents a clear picture of some of history's most profound spokesmen--the Old Testament prophets--and the God who shaped them.

Book excerpt: Ever wish someone could give you a big handle on the entire Bible without years of study? Well, this book not only promises to give you that big handle—it will deliver on the promise. You should be asking, how is this possible? The Bible is one story told over and over again, with many variations on the same theme. This structure is the Bible’s DNA. This basic seven-point pattern is the heartbeat of the Creation. It is the cycle of a human day and a human life. It is the pattern of the Tabernacle. It is the process of agriculture. It undergirds the speeches and Laws of God. It orders the rise and fall of nations and empires. It is also the structure of our worship. It is the rhythm of Christ, and it will open the Bible for you like never before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is concerned with the influence of biblical and prophetic traditions on the author of the book of Revelation, and in particular his use of the prophecies of Isaiah. First, John's own prophetic consciousness and expression is compared with previous Israelite-Jewish and early Christian prophetic conventions. This is followed by an evaluation of John's use of the OT in general, including a discussion of methodology for isolating allusions, the question of the validity of the terms quotation and allusion in Revelation, and the presence of thematic patterns in the author's choice of Scripture. All this is foundational to the main portion of the work (Ch. III), where a detailed analysis is undertaken to determine the validity of all proposed allusions to Isaiah in the book of Revelation. Of the 72 suggested allusions treated, 40 were judged as certain or virtually certain, 24 were considered as unlikely or doubtful, and 8 were appraised as probable or possible. Those allusions which were accepted received further evaluation to see how and why they were used by John, with special attention given to the tradition-history of the passage used, and the possible interpretative techniques employed. A variety of exegetical and literary devices were uncovered, including the use of catchwords, inclusio, repetition of texts, exploitation of Hebrew parallelism, and the collection of texts around a central theme. Furthermore, John's use of Isaiah is concentrated in basic areas, with clusters of Isaiah texts appearing in specific sections of Revelation. The principal Isaian themes with which he is interested are holy war and the Day of the Lord, oracles against the nations, and salvation prophecies relating to the community of faith and the restored and glorified Jerusalem. It was concluded that on the whole, John's use of Isaiah is not random, and he does not use the OT texts merely as a visionary resource for language, phrases, structural patterns etc. But he consciously carries on the prophecies of his biblical predecessors and invokes their authority. The remnants and results of John's interpretation of Isaiah presuppose exegetical activity and application prior to the vision experience and it is likely that at least some of his intended readers were familiar not only with his theological concerns, but also with his methodological approach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in perilous times: the truths of Christianity are under daily attack. Anti-religious books are everywhere - even in "Christian" bookstores. Consider The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins, God is not great by Christopher Hitchens, or The End of Faith by Sam Harris. These books and others are converting America to a secular, atheist state. Plus, Islam is growing worldwide. Fewer people identify themselves as Christians than in the past, a decrease of 10 to 20 percent in just the last few years. Young people are leaving the church in record numbers, as many as 70 percent in a decade. Intellectual skepticism is growing at an unprecedented pace as the truths of the Gospels are under daily assault. What can we do? Clearly we must confront these attacks and beat them at their own game: reason and science. James Harrison shows us how to do this in The Pattern & The Prophecy: God's Great Code. At the core of all the sciences is mathematics. The author proves God put as much mathematics into His Word as he placed in His Works. Everyone knows the number of the Antichrist, but who knows the number of Christ or the number of Jesus? And how is Jesus' number related to Noah, to being born again, and the resurrection. And since fishermen never count fish, what is the purpose of exactly 153 fish from John 21:11? Harrison reveals all this and much, much more proving mathematics lies at the heart of God's Holy Word from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21, the Bible's first and last verses. Armed with this absolute certainty Christians can convert any non-believer. As Isaiah 54:17 says, "No weapon forged against you will prevail." After reading this book, you will be an expert on the Bible's patterns, numbers, and symbolism. You have never read like this before - a book that comes along once in a lifetime to change lives forever. This book is destined to become an American classic. Look for yourself! Included are many color photographs, numerous illustrations, bibliography, proofs, and three indexes: scriptural, number, and subject. Easy to read and informative, this book will enrich the spiritual life of every Christian. This book has garnered a consistent string of rave reviews - here are two: The author, guided by the Holy Spirit, connects Old Testament dates and history and connects them to New Testament reality, straight forward to our days. With even-handed treatment that presents different views in an organized and logical form, The Pattern & The Prophecy is a great resource for putting the information into an easy to understand format and teaching eschatology. The author is simply brilliant, a scrupulous scholar, and his point of view is based primarily on the Canonized Holy Scriptures although he is not afraid to gain insights from other sources of information. This particular book plows new ground. I need to re-read it. I think it's worth the time and effort. Very thought provoking! A must read for those who want to know the truth in a beautiful new eBook format. Gerry, Alabama, Teacher If you want more understanding as you read the Bible, read this book. It proves that God is the Master Mathematician. Actually, I'm not any good at math at all, but I understand the basic concept Harrison is writing about. As a matter of fact, its easy to do this yourself. For example: In Chapter 8 I read that "153" is Jesus' celestial number, so I found out on my own that the word "lamb(s)" is in the Old Testament 153 times (Jesus is the "Lamb" of God that takes the sin away from the world)! Also, regarding the 144,000 Jews that will be saved after the rapture, I counted Jerusalem in the New Testament and it's in there 144 times! I love this book! Go for it - you can find your own pieces of the "God" puzzle as I have. God is letting us in on so many things. Don't miss out! Debbie Stopforth: Graduate of Grace School of Ministry

Book excerpt: This collection gathers together Professor Shemaryahu Talmon’s contributions to the literary study of the Bible, and complements his acclaimed Literary Studies in the Hebrew Bible: Form and Content: Collected Studies (Jerusalem: Magnes / Leiden: Brill, 1993). The articles included herein span a broad range of topics, closely and comprehensively assessing fundamental themes and stylistic conceits present in biblical literature. Each study picks up one of these motifs or patterns, and traces its meaning and usage throughout the entire Bible. In Talmon’s estimation, these literary markers transcend all strata of the Bible, and despite diachronic developments, they retain their basic meanings and connotations throughout, even when employed by different authors over a span of hundreds of years. He demonstrates this convincingly by marshaling dozens of examples, each of which is valuable in its own right, and when taken all together, these building-blocks form a solid edifice that validate his approach. He judiciously employs this synchronic method throughout, frequently invoking an exegetical principle according to which one biblical verse can be employed to interpret the other, if they are found in similar contexts and with overlapping formulation. To use an expression that he coined elsewhere, his hermeneutical method can be described first and foremost as “The World of the Bible from Within.” Throughout the articles that appear in this volume, one is repeatedly struck by his sensitivity to the language and style of the biblical authors. He was blessed with a rich literary intuition, and shares with his readers his ability to see, hear, and understand the rhythms and poetics of biblical literature. In this volume, many of Talmon’s contributions are made accessible in fresh form to the benefit of both those who already know his work and to a newer generation of scholars for whom his work continues to prove important.

Is the United States mentioned in prophecy? What is the order of events that will unfold? Will Christians be on earth during the rise of the Antichrist? And what will happen if I’m alive during his reign? But if God wanted us to study the book of Revelation to find answers, why is it so hard to understand? Maybe it is easier than it first appears. In A Chronological Revelation, you will begin a journey that takes you beyond a mere understanding of Revelation to encountering the very fabric with which God wove creation. In Revelation, all of the biblical prophecies, penned by numerous authors over hundreds of years, converge to reveal not only a clear picture of the end times, but the true author and his character. Through the beauty of this convergence, the author of the universe reveals his omnipotence, love, justice, and design for the ages. A Chronological Revelation makes no assumptions. It simply allows biblical prophecy to reveal the final events of our time, including the true nature and role of the countries that exist at the return of Christ. If you are counted among those privileged to experience this incredible period of history, it won’t be easy. But in this study, you will see God’s plan in and through that time, empowering you to live for him no matter what challenges lie ahead.

Book excerpt: This is the promised workbook that grew out of campmeeting workshops. Student after student praised the method of simply reading straight through the prophecies with the help of only markers and charts. They said this never-before-seen method clarified the prophetic sequences in their own minds and helped them see the repeating patterns without all the clutter that gets introduced by lots of history and jumping around the Bible. The book develops a prophetic timeline starting with Adam and Eve, then expanded by Moses. The Hebrew religious calendar that starts with Passover and ends with the Day of Atonement and Jubilee provides a framework into which Daniel places the empires and the cleansing of the sanctuary. The readers see a unity of all the prophecies in Scripture, including Matthew 24 and Revelation. What people are saying "This needs to be in the churches to show God is in charge." "Please bring this in the churches because it focuses on Bible-only, NOT opinion." "I love the overview presentation and fitting all things into a gap-free outlook. I love your spiritual applications since all these prophecies are about Jesus and God and love and mercy." "This would be a good weekend seminar for our churches to help us not repeat the actions of the Jews." "It is not another prophecy class where they are gonna pick verses from all over the place." "I learned about keeping prophecy simple." "I will go through the guides until I can do it blindfolded, so I can explain." "The best lesson was how to make a spiritual connection vs only dates and history." "Very good chart. I will use it with others." "I like the teaching style--moving through slowly. I have done a decent amount of study of Daniel, but I am learning much in this class. It is a blessing."

Book excerpt: A profound exploration of how to hold on to hope when our unchanging faith collides with a changing culture, from two respected Christian storytellers and thought leaders. “Offers neither spin control nor image maintenance for the evangelical tribe, but genuine hope.”—Russell Moore, president of ERLC As the pressures of health warnings, economic turmoil, and partisan politics continue to rise, the influence of gospel-focused Christians seems to be waning. In the public square and popular opinion, we are losing our voice right when it’s needed most for Christ’s glory and the common good. But there’s another story unfolding too—if you know where to look. In Gospelbound, Collin Hansen and Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra counter these growing fears with a robust message of resolute hope for anyone hungry for good news. Join them in exploring profound stories of Christians who are quietly changing the world in the name of Jesus—from the wild world of digital media to the stories of ancient saints and unsung contemporary activists on the frontiers of justice and mercy. Discover how, in these dark times, the light of Jesus shines even brighter. You haven’t heard the whole story. And that’s good news.
