Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the author summarizes the present state of knowledge of those physical and chemical properties of glasses that are important as regards their application and manufacture. The nature of these applications is briefly described. The introductory chapter deals with the nature and chemical composition of inorganic glasses, covering such topics as structure, devitrification and phase separation. The main part of the book comprises a group of chapters describing the important physical properties: viscosity, thermal expansion, mechanical strength, refractive index and dispersion, absorption of radiation and electrical properties. The final chapter deals with chemical durability. Most chapters deal briefly with methods of measurement of the property concerned and with the effects of glass composition, temperature, heat treatment, etc. Wherever appropriate, the scientific principles relevant to particular applications are discussed. Sufficient references to the literature are given to enable the reader to follow up in more detail the various topics discussed.

Book excerpt: Thermal poling is a technique which involves the application of a strong DC electric field to a glass substrate heated below its glass transition temperature (T[subscript g]). Following the treatment, a static electric field is frozen inside the glass matrix, effectively breaking its centrosymmetry. Historically, this treatment has been used as a way to gain access to second order non-linear optical properties in glasses. However, recent efforts have shown that the treatment was responsible for structural changes as well as surface property modifications. Our study was focused on using this technique to tailor surface properties in oxide (borosilicate and niobium borophosphate) and chalcogenide glasses. A strong emphasis was put on trying to control all changes at the micrometric scale. After poling, property changes were assessed using a set of characterization tools: the Maker fringes technique (a Second Harmonic Generation ellipsometry technique), micro-Second Harmonic Generation ([mu]-SHG), vibrational spectroscopy and Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS). Surface reactivity in borosilicate glasses was effectively changed while in niobium borophosphate and chalcogenide glasses, the optical properties were controlled linearly and non-linearly. Finally, property changes were effectively controlled at the micrometric scale. This opens up new applications of thermal poling as a mean to design glass substrate for integrated photonics and lab-on-a-chip devices.

Book excerpt: Surface treatment is an efficient means for protection of various products against corrosion and also for increasing strength or resistance to wear or fatigue. Also certain electrical, chemical or optical properties may be achieved only by creating special surface layers. Many examples can be given: leaf springs with shot-peened surfaces; carburised and hardened tooth gears; coated cutting tips for machining; chemical appliances made of glass strengthened by ion exchange; enamelled vessels and containers; components for engines or turbines with heat insulating ceramic surface layers; chemical equipment made from low-carbon steel clad with a layer of stainless steel or other more expensive material; endoprostheses of hip joints with ceramic coatings; multilayered integrated circuits and other components for electronics and electrotechnology. In many of these components, high stresses often act; from mechanical loading as well as thermal and residual ones, caused by the surface treatment itself. These stresses can sometimes lead to a failure of parts bearing small or even no load. Thus, for an efficient utilisation of all the advantages surface treatment offers, and for assuring that the designed component will work reliably for a certain period, often under very severe conditions, it is necessary to know how components with coated or otherwise treated surfaces behave under mechanical loading, and what the reasons may be for their preliminary fracture or rejection from service. It is also important to know the general principles of design of surface treated components.

Book excerpt: This is the second, revised edition of a book that has already proved invaluable to a wide range of readers. Written by a scientist for scientists and technical people, it goes beyond the subject matter indicated by the title, filling the gap which previously existed in the available technical literature. It includes a wealth of information for physicists, chemists and engineers who need to know more about thin films for research purposes, or who want to use this special form of solid material to achieve a variety of application-oriented goals.
