Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer program, the Propeller Nacelle Aerodynamic Performance Prediction Analysis (PANPER), was developed for the prediction and analysis of the performance and airflow of propeller-nacelle configurations operating over a forward speed range inclusive of high speed flight typical of recent propfan designs. A propeller lifting line, wake program was combined with a compressible, viscous center body interaction program, originally developed for diffusers, to compute the propeller-nacelle flow field, blade loading distribution, propeller performance, and the nacelle forebody pressure and viscous drag distributions. The computer analysis is applicable to single and coaxial counterrotating propellers. The blade geometries can include spanwise variations in sweep, droop, taper, thickness, and airfoil section type. In the coaxial mode of operation the analysis can treat both equal and unequal blade number and rotational speeds on the propeller disks. The nacelle portion of the analysis can treat both free air and tunnel wall configurations including wall bleed. The analysis was applied to many different sets of flight conditions using selected aerodynamic modeling options. The influence of different propeller nacelle-tunnel wall configurations was studied. Comparisons with available test data for both single and coaxial propeller configurations are presented along with a discussion of the results. Egolf, T. Book excerpt: OPENPROP, an open-source computational tool for the design and analysis of propellers and horizontal-axis turbines, is extended to provide estimates of normal stresses in the blades for both on- and off-design operating conditions. The numerical model is based on propeller lifting theory, and the present implementation of the code includes an analysis capability to estimate the off-design performance of the propeller or turbine and to make blade stress predictions. As an example, we present the design and performance of a two-bladed propeller. Experimental measurements of the propeller performance over a wide range of off-design operating conditions agree with performance predictions. Estimates of the blade stress are given for on-design and off design operating states of the propeller.

Book excerpt: Computational analysis of two 1911 Wright brothers 'Bent End' wooden propeller reproductions have been performed and compared with experimental test results from the Langley Full Scale Wind Tunnel. The purpose of the analysis was to check the consistency of the experimental results and to validate the reliability of the tests. This report is one part of the project on the propeller performance research of the Wright 'Bent End' propellers, intend to document the Wright brothers' pioneering propeller design contributions. Two computer codes were used in the computational predictions. The FLO-MG Navier-Stokes code is a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) code based on the Navier-Stokes Equations. It is mainly used to compute the lift coefficient and the drag coefficient at specified angles of attack at different radii. Those calculated data are the intermediate results of the computation and a part of the necessary input for the Propeller Design Analysis Code (based on Adkins and Libeck method), which is a propeller design code used to compute the propeller thrust coefficient, the propeller power coefficient and the propeller propulsive efficiency.Wang, Xiang-Yu and Ash, Robert L. and Bobbitt, Percy J. and Prior, Edwin (Technical Monitor)Langley Research CenterPROPELLER EFFICIENCY; PROPELLER BLADES; COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS; WIND TUNNEL TESTS; NAVIER-STOKES EQUATION; COMPUTERIZED SIMULATION; APPLICATIONS PROGRAMS (COMPUTERS); LIFT; AERODYNAMIC DRAG

Book excerpt: A comparison is made of classical vortex theory with experimental and numerical results on statically thrusting propellers and rotors, and on propellers in forward flight. It is concluded that vortex theory can accurately predict the overall thrust and power of these propulsors when proper account is taken of normality between the vortex sheet and induced velocities in the wake. Further, it is necessary to include accurate airfoil section lift and drag coefficients as a function of Mach number and angle-of-attack in order to realize an accurate prediction. Also, although corrections to account for section thickness and wide-blade effects were found to be negligible, the prediction of rotor or propeller performance was found to depend rather strongly on the helix angle at the edge of the trailing-vortex sheet.

Book excerpt: Analytical expressions are derived to show the geometric, thermodynamic, and aerodynamic relations among compressor, turbine, and exhaust nozzle for a gas-turbine engine. For a known compressor performance map, a matching method is described to show some of the design compromises that must be made when the components are to be combined into a turbine-propeller engine. A method of predicting engine performance for a range of operating conditions from known component maps is presented. An illustrative example of the matching method and the performance analysis is presented, showing some of the practical limitations of engine operation.

Book excerpt: Reported here is a design study of a propeller for a vehicle capable of subsonic flight in Earth's stratosphere. All propellers presented were required to absorb 63.4 kW (85 hp) at 25.9 km (85,000 ft) while aircraft cruise velocity was maintained at Mach 0.40. To produce the final design, classic momentum and blade-element theories were combined with two and three-dimensional results from the Advanced Ducted Propfan Analysis Code (ADPAC), a numerical Navier-Stokes analysis code. The Eppler 387 airfoil was used for each of the constant section propeller designs compared. Experimental data from the Langley Low-Turbulence Pressure Tunnel was used in the strip theory design and analysis programs written. The experimental data was also used to validate ADPAC at a Reynolds numbers of 60,000 and a Mach number of 0.20. Experimental and calculated surface pressure coefficients are compared for a range of angles of attack. Since low Reynolds number transonic experimental data was unavailable, ADPAC was used to generate two-dimensional section performance predictions for Reynolds numbers of 60,000 and 100,000 and Mach numbers ranging from 0.45 to 0.75. Surface pressure coefficients are presented for selected angles of attack. in addition to the variation of lift and drag coefficients at each flow condition. A three-dimensional model of the final design was made which ADPAC used to calculated propeller performance. ADPAC performance predictions were compared with strip-theory calculations at design point. Propeller efficiency predicted by ADPAC was within 1.5% of that calculated by strip theory methods, although ADPAC predictions of thrust, power, and torque coefficients were approximately 5% lower than the strip theory results. Simplifying assumptions made in the strip theory account for the differences seen. Koch, L. Book excerpt: The improvements and the modifications of the NASA Aircraft Noise Prediction Program (ANOPP) and the Propeller Analysis System (PAS) are described. Comparisons of the predictions and the test data are included in the case studies for the flat plate model in the Boundary Layer Module, for the effects of applying compressibility corrections to the lift and pressure coefficients, for the use of different weight factors in the Propeller Performance Module, for the use of the improved retarded time equation solution, and for the effect of the number grids in the Transonic Propeller Noise Module. The DNW tunnel test data of a propeller at different angles of attack and the Dowty Rotol data are compared with ANOPP predictions. The effect of the number of grids on the Transonic Propeller Noise Module predictions and the comparison of ANOPP TPN and DFP-ATP codes are studied. In addition to the above impact studies, the transonic propeller noise predictions for the SR-7, the UDF front rotor, and the support of the enroute noise test program are included. Nguyen, L.
