Book excerpt: For researchers and students, George’s books have become the standard works on in vitro plant propagation. For this, the third edition of the classic work, authors with specialist knowledge have been brought on board to cover the hugely expanded number of topics in the subject area. Scientific knowledge has expanded rapidly since the second edition and it would now be a daunting task for a single author to cover all aspects adequately. However, this edition still maintains the integration that was characteristic of the previous editions. The first volume of the new edition highlights the scientific background of in vitro propagation. The second volume covers the practice of micropropagation and describes its various applications.

As with most woody plant species, molecular biology and biotechnology have progressed at a slow pace, due to several obstacles which have had to be overcome. However, substantial progress has now been made and useful information has been accumulated in the literature; numerous genes have been characterized from grapevine and significant progress has been made in the molecular and non-molecular biotechnological applications. In an effort to collect and present the state of the art on grapevine molecular biology and biotechnology, 41 scientists from 12 countries worked jointly on the preparation of this book. It is intended as a reference book for viticulturists, graduate and undergraduate students, biotechnological companies, and any scientist who is interested in molecular biology and biotechnology of plants with emphasis on grapevine.

Book excerpt: Micropropagation has become a reliable and routine approach for large-scale rapid plant multiplication, which is based on plant cell, tissue and organ culture on well defined tissue culture media under aseptic conditions. A lot of research efforts are being made to develop and refine micropropagation methods and culture media for large-scale plant multiplication of several number of plant species. However, many forest and fruit tree species still remain recalcitrant to in vitro culture and require highly specific culture conditions for plant growth and development. The recent challenges on plant cell cycle regulation and the presented potential molecular mechanisms of recalcitrance are providing excellent background for understanding on totipotency and what is more development of micropropagation protocols. For large-scale in vitro plant production the important attributes are the quality, cost effectiveness, maintenance of genetic fidelity, and long-term storage. The need for appropriate in vitro plant regeneration methods for woody plants, including both forest and fruit trees, is still overwhelming in order to overcome problems facing micropropagation such as somaclonal variation, recalcitrant rooting, hyperhydricity, polyphenols, loss of material during hardening and quality of plant material. Moreover, micropropagation may be utilized, in basic research, in production of virus-free planting material, cryopreservation of endangered and elite woody species, applications in tree breeding and reforestation.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1883 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VI. TEMPERATURE. The earliest varieties of the Vine require about five months to ripen their fruit from the time of starting the Vines; but kinds like the Black Hamburgh are better allowed six months. Late varieties, like the Muscat of Alexandria, Gros Guillaume, and others mentioned in the list of late Grapes at the end, require nearly eight months, but the Alicante and Lady Downes can be ripened perfectly between the beginning of April and the end of October. Grape-growers have, therefore, only to calculate when they will need any given crops to be ripe, and start their Vineries accordingly. Before starting the Vines they should be washed and cleaned, and so should any portion of the Vinery inside; the border should also receive a good watering. As regards temperature a few noteworthy fruit-growers allow considerable latitude, preferring rather to be guided by circumstances and weather conditions, than by hard-and-fast F rules. With the Vine, however, in the earlier stages of forcing, unnaturally, not to say injuriously, high night temperatures have been the rule hitherto; but a great change has taken place of late years in favour of lower temperatures, as being both better for the Vines and more economical. If we compare the night temperatures generally recommended for the Vine, from the starting period till the setting of the fruit, it will be found that they far exceed the average night temperature during the same period of growth in those countries most favourable to the Vine; and what makes the matter worse, these excessively high temperatures are given under circumstances which only increase their power of mischief; as, for instance, when the Vine is forced in a Vinery under our cloudy skies, and during the long dark...

Book excerpt: Second in the series, High-Tech and Micropropagation, this work covers the micropropagation of trees and fruit-bearing plants, such as poplar, birches, larch, American sweetgum, black locust, Sorbus, sandalwood, Quercus, cedar, Persian walnut, date palm, cocoa, Citrus, olive, apple, pear, peach, plum, cherry, papaya, pineapple, kiwi, Japanese persimmon, grapevine, strawberry, and raspberry. The importance and distribution of conventional propagation and in vitro studies on individual species are discussed. In particular detail, the transfer of in vitro plants to the greenhouse or the field, and the prospects of commercial exploitation are examined. The book will be of use to advanced students, research workers and teachers in horticulture, forestry and plant biotechnology in general, and also to individuals interested in industrial micropropagation.
