Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time for modern biomass has come. It has long been overshadowed by other, more widely-publicized renewable energy technologies such as wind, solar and hydro, and still retains an outmoded image in comparison to its apparently more attractive cousins. The potential for biomass to act as a store of solar energy, and yet to be converted efficiently when required into heat, power, transport fuels and even substitutes for plastics and petrochemicals, is not widely appreciated. The increasing abundance of well-designed, successful bioenergy projects around the world is creating new interest in this renewable, sustainable and low-emission-producing source of energy. The Brilliance of Bioenergy covers all the main resources and technologies, principles, practice, social and environmental issues as well as the economics involved. The book also presents valuable, practical experiences - both 'how to' and 'how not to' - in the form of case studies of both small and large scale projects in both developed and developing countries. The Brilliance of Bioenergy is for those wishing to learn more about biomass, the technologies and the business potential. It will be welcomed by all involved in biomass production, bioenergy utilization, planning and development, and in renewable energies in general, as well as students, academics and researchers in the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomass is set to play an increasing role in the supply of energy, both in the industrialised world and in developing countries, as concern for the state of the global environment grows. The possibility for the acceleration of commercial production has received support from the increasing involvement of the large power producers and the growing political commitments of several European countries. The 9th European Bioenergy Conference was held in Copenhagen, 24-27 June 1996. Interest in this conference series continues to grow and the event attracted around 700 delegates from 45 countries. In contrast to previous events, more emphasis was placed on demonstrating bioenergy technology in the marketplace. Overviews on recent achievements in commercial or near commercial activities formed the main focus of the event, but highlights of advancesin science and technological development were also presented, in addition to papers covering environmental aspects of bioenergy. The proceedings contain 350 state-of-the-art papers addressing the following areas; primary production of biomass; provision and production of solid biomass fuels; processes for large power plants; processes for decentralised heat and power production; processes for production of transportation fuels; market, economic and environmental aspects of bioenergyand policy measures to overcome non-technical barriers

In future, biomass and bioenergy will become increasingly significant energy sources, making a contribution both to carbon dioxide abatement and to the security, diversity and sustainability of global energy supplies. In this book, experts provide a series of authoritative chapters on the intricate mechanisms of photosynthesis and the potential for using and improving photosynthetic organisms, plants and trees to sequester carbon dioxide and to provide fuel and useful chemicals for the benefit of man./a

This book was released on 1978 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of the Phase I ERDA High-Temperature Turbine Technology (HTTT) Program was to provide a ''Program and System Definition'' of the three-phase program which would culminate in the testing of a Technology Readiness Vehicle (TRV) at the end of a six-year period. The TRV is designed for use in a combined cycle using coal-derived fuels at a firing temperature of 2600°F; growth capability to 3000°F is projected. The Phase I results reported are based on a 2600°F gas turbine burning coal-derived fuels. The following major areas are covered: overall plant design descriptions; systems design descriptions; turbine subsystem design; combustor design; phase II proposed program; and phase III proposed program. Details regarding final results of each of these areas are presented. It is concluded that the water-cooled gas turbine in combined cycle has been shown to be capable of extremely attractive levels of performance, both in terms of efficiency and specific output. Coupled with the ability to tolerate a wide range of coal-derived fuels with minimum fuel treatment, an extremely attractive system is presented for the generation of electric power. Future technology development of the high-firing-temperature water-cooled gas turbine is expected to result in the commercial introduction of this concept in combined cycles by the late 1980's or early 1990's.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ready availability of biomass in Brazil makes this type of fuel a major candidate to integrate the country's energy matrix. Although this fuel is used as a primary energy source, its use for electricity generation is still modest. On the other hand, high efficiency and power density achieved by modem gas turbine engines make them a promising option for the power generation market. Thus, this thesis has as main objective to analyse the marriage between the solid fuel, biomass in this case, and gas turbines. Two main types of power plants are studied; the biomass integrated gasification gas turbine cycle (BIGGT) and the externally fired cycle (EFGT), which for the first time is thoroughly studied for the use of biomass fuel, plus the intercooled and recuperated variants of these power plants. The results are compared with the ordinary natural gas fuelled cycle. The method involves on- and off-design point performance and exergy analysis. The economic performance and optimisation for each cycle is also explored in order to assess their feasibility. The optimisation technique adopted is the Genetic Algorithm (GA) connected to the conventional hill-climbing methodology. This merge uses the GA to identify the region of optimum values, which are then passed on to the hill-climbing algorithm. In this way the long time demanded by the GA to converge is shortened and the unreliability of the hill-climbing method in finding the global optimum is overcome. The codes developed for design-point performance analysis and optimisation, compared with a commercial package, proved reliable and robust. The tools developed for exergy analysis (on- and off-design) are also robust and flexible, with the capability of analysing and calculating the properties of mixtures made of 23 different gases. The emissions equations are sufficiently accurate for the purposes of this thesis. The relationship proposed for calculating the variable operating and maintenance costs proved to be consisten.
