Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemometrics is the chemical discipline that uses mathematical, statistical and other methods employing formal logic: to design or select optimal measurement procedures and experiments, and -- to provide maximum relevant chemical information by analysing chemical data. Being conceived as a branch of analytical chemistry, chemometrics now is a general approach. It extracts relevant information out of measured data, regardless of their origin: chemical, physical, biological, etc. Chemometrics has been applied in different areas, and most successfully in multivariate calibration, pattern recognition, classification and discriminant analysis, multivariate modelling, and monitoring of processes. The main chemometric principle is a concept of hidden data structures that can be found using methods of multivariate data analysis. These are the well-known statistic tools such as partial least squares (PLS), soft independent modelling of class analogy (SIMCA), principal-component regression (PCR), wavelet analysis, and many others. Current activities of chemometricians fall into two main categories: (1) development of new methods for manipulating multivariate data and (2) new applications of the known chemometric techniques in different areas such as environment control, food industry, agriculture, medicine, and engineering.

Book excerpt: These conference proceedings form a worthy contribution to the literature on spectrometry reviving the tradition begun at the U.S. National Bureau of Standards conferences in the 1970's of holding interdisciplinary conferences on advances in the standardisation and methodology of spectrometry. The papers and poster abstracts presented in this volume maintain the high professional standards of these earlier NBS conferences, providing a basis for further progress in this discipline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 8 in the series Progress in AnaZyticaZ Chemistry presents a selection of the papers given at the 1975 Eastern Analytical Symposium. The analytical chemist is under constant pressure not only from the research chemist whose sampIes he must characterize and control, but also from an ever-increasing group of governmental agencies stimulated by public concern over health and environmental problems, to determine the most sophisticated kinds of compounds as lower and lower levels. The subjects covered in these papers are wide-ranging, from the analysis of incinerator effluents to the determination of drugs in blood, but through them runs a common theme, the appli cation of the latest instrumental techniques to the problems of analysis. The authors show how successful they have been in rising to the analytical challenges pre sented by an increasingly complex world. The editors take this opportunity to thank them for their efforts in producing such excellent papers for publication in so short a time. Dur special appreciation goes to Dr. M. W. Miller, who acted as program chairman, and his team of session chairmen: P. R. Brown, L. J. Cline Love, C. Horvath, J. R. Lindsay, and T. C. Rains.

Spectroscopic techniques contribute a lot to various diverse research areas including material processing and characterisation, communication, forensic science, defence, etc. The rapid expansion of research activity in the field of material science evokes the need for different analytical and diagnostic techniques. Spectroscopy is such an analytical and diagnostic tool, extremely used to characterise materials. It is now commonly used by astrophysicist, mineralogists, nano-physicists or even scientists working in medical research. This book has therefore been prepared to provide easy access to basic information on different spectroscopy techniques and related instrumentation. This book is intended as a guide to the novice reading technical books or facing the complexities while dealing with the concept of spectroscopic techniques and their instrumentation. The authors of chapters presented in this book are all experts in their fields and were instructed to give substantial information to enable novices to learn and understand the advanced spectroscopic techniques. The present book primarily provides details about the time resolved spectroscopy; laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS); Raman spectroscopy; nonlinear spectroscopy; microwave spectroscopy; up conversion spectroscopy, etc

Book excerpt: This volume presents a group of selected papers given at the November, 1972, meeting of the Eastern Analytical Symposium. As has always been the intent of the series, "Progress in Analytical Chemistry," the papers are written by authorities who are also active workers in their fields. Included are applications of Raman Spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction, Emission Spectroscopy, Nu clear Magnetic Resonance, Liquid Chromatography, Thin-Layer Chromatography, Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry, Gas Chromatography and the powerful marriage of the last two. In modern analysis there is a constant search for applications of existing instrumentation in new ways to produce results hitherto unobtainable. In every case both the versatility of the researcher and the flexibility of the method used are amply illustrated. Thanks are due to the authors of the papers for their efforts in coping with the many problems of producing a manuscript in finished form enabling rapid publication. Ivor L. Simmons Galen W. Book excerpt: June 1986 brought together some of the world's leaders in computer enhanced analytical spectroscopy at Snowbird, Utah, for what the attendees decided to call "The First Hidden Peak Symposium." With the remarkable advances in both computer hardware and software, it is interesting to observe that, while many computational aspects of spectroscopic analysis have become routine, some of the more fundamental problems remain unsolved. The group that assembled included many of those who started trying to interpret chemical spectroscopy when computers were ponderous, slow, and not very accessible, as well as newcomers who never knew the day that spectrometers were delivered without attached computers. The synergism was excellent. Many new ideas, as well as this volume, resulted from interactions among the participants. The conclusion was that progress would be made on more fundamen tal problems now that hardware, software, and mathematics were coming together on a more sophisticated level. The feeling was that the level of sophistication is now adequate and that it is only a matter of time before automated spectral interpretation surpasses all but the most advanced human experts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vol. 2 of "Progress in Materials Analysis" contains the lectures of the 12th Colloquium on Materials Analysis, Vienna, May 13-15, 1985. Due to the top level international participation from industry and research insti tutions the proceedings offer a survey of the present state and current trends in materials analysis of high actuality. The major topics covered are surface, micro and trace analysis of materials with a special emphasis on metals but also including other materials like ceramics, semiconductors, polymers. According to the strategy of the meeting attention is focussed on an interdisciplinary approach to materials science - combining analytical chemistry, solid state physics and technol ogy. Therefore progress reports on modern analytical technique like SIMS, SNMS, AES, XPS, Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy, EPMA, STEM, LAMMS, etc. are contained as well as presentations on the development of materials. The majority of the contributions centers on the treatment of important problems in materials science and technology by a (mostly sophisticated) combination of physical and chemical analytical techniques.
