Book Synopsis Devil Take the Hindmost by : Edward Chancellor
Download or read book Devil Take the Hindmost written by Edward Chancellor and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2000-06-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lively, original, and challenging history of stock market speculation from the 17th century to present day. Is your investment in that new Internet stock a sign of stock market savvy or an act of peculiarly American speculative folly? How has the psychology of investing changed—and not changed—over the last five hundred years? In Devil Take the Hindmost, Edward Chancellor traces the origins of the speculative spirit back to ancient Rome and chronicles its revival in the modern world: from the tulip scandal of 1630s Holland, to “stockjobbing” in London's Exchange Alley, to the infamous South Sea Bubble of 1720, which prompted Sir Isaac Newton to comment, “I can calculate the motion of heavenly bodies, but not the madness of people.” Here are brokers underwriting risks that included highway robbery and the “assurance of female chastity”; credit notes and lottery tickets circulating as money; wise and unwise investors from Alexander Pope and Benjamin Disraeli to Ivan Boesky and Hillary Rodham Clinton. From the Gilded Age to the Roaring Twenties, from the nineteenth century railway mania to the crash of 1929, from junk bonds and the Japanese bubble economy to the day-traders of the Information Era, Devil Take the Hindmost tells a fascinating story of human dreams and folly through the ages.
Book Synopsis Financial Speculation and Fictitious Profits by : Gustavo Moura de Cavalcanti Mello
Download or read book Financial Speculation and Fictitious Profits written by Gustavo Moura de Cavalcanti Mello and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an original account of financialisation and outlines the creation of fictitious profits as a basis to describe the present phase of capitalist accumulation in the neoliberal era. Making innovative theoretical elaborations on Marx’s notion of fictitious capital, Financial Speculation and Fictitious Profits offers a dialectic analysis of the increasing financialization during this crisis-ridden period based on the original concepts of fictitious profit and fictitious wealth. Combining the most important research from over twenty years of scholarly inquiry with groundbreaking new studies, Financial Speculation and Fictitious Profits is more than a collection of texts by political economists on a contemporary topic; it is a synthesis of an intense process of academic production that began with work of Karl Marx and has resulted in the formulation of a differentiated interpretative perspective on the contemporary evolution of capitalist crisis.

Book excerpt: In financial markets, “Speculation is trading in shares or commodities or in any financial instrument involving high risk in expectation of substantial gains”.This is an act of trading in financial instruments or act of entering into any financial transaction that has a significant risk of losing most of or all of the initial investment in expectation of significant gains. Book Synopsis Makers of Fortune by : R. C. J. Stone
Download or read book Makers of Fortune written by R. C. J. Stone and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So many businesses rose and fell in nineteenth-century Auckland that the city was called a &‘graveyard of enterprise'. By far the most serious and general collapse came during the decade of depression and banking crises which overtook the whole colony after 1885. Auckland's commercial elite, which had dominated the city's business for a generation and had launched some of New Zealand's most important financial institutions, was discredited. Some of its members were impoverished. In the 1890s this failure was explained in moralistic terms. It was seen as the just penalty for speculative rashness. Makers of Fortune suggests that although optimism was almost an Auckland trait and was incited by rapid city growth, other economic forces were also at work. There was, for one, the ease with which funds could be obtained from abroad. Many Auckland businessmen tried to make their way by the application of the Victorian ideal of self-help. Some succeeded; other failed after early success. Through contemporary newspapers and business and legal records Dr Stone has traced a story of the fates of individual industries, firms and entrepreneurs, which also illuminates the impulses of colonial business in general.

This book was released on 2006-12-01 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friend to, colleague of, and influence on the likes of James Mill, Jeremy Bentham, and Thomas Malthus, revolutionary British writer DAVID RICARDO (1772-1823) was one of the foundational thinkers of classical economics, developing theories of rent, wages, profits, value, and labor that continue to dramatically impact economic philosophy today. Here, in one volume, are two of his profoundly significant essays: In 1810's "The High Price of Bullion" Ricardo calls for the adoption of a metallic currency. And "An Essay on Profits," from 1815, contains Ricardo's arguments against protectionism in Britain's national policy, and was instrumental in the eventual defeat of the country's tariffs on agricultural products.____________________________________ALSO FROM COSIMO: Ricardo's Principles of Political Economy and Taxation
