Book excerpt: Academic agricultural communication programs across the United States prepare graduates to serve the information needs of both consumers and agricultural producers. As agriculture continues to grow in scope and complexity, communicators must be prepared to keep pace with the growing information demands of audiences around the globe. This study serves as a "pulse check" for university agricultural communication programs to identify their perceived strengths and weaknesses in preparing graduates to enter the professional agricultural communication industry. The researcher randomly selected 20 industry professionals to participate in open- ended telephone interviews that addressed various aspects of university agricultural communication programs. Participants were identified from the 2006 AgriMarketing Annual Marketing Services Guide and represented U.S. marketing communication agencies, U.S. print agencies, and U.S. farm broadcasters. Interviewees answered a series of questions in three categories: the agricultural communication industry at large, hiring and the future, and education and professional development. The conversations were recorded and transcribed. Closed-ended responses were reported using frequencies, means, and standard deviations, where appropriate. Open-ended responses were coded according to common themes when possible. Results of the study revealed that agricultural communication professionals want to be involved in agricultural communication curriculum development. Respondents advised individuals at colleges and universities who are making decisions about curriculum to stay connected to the industry and to seek industry input. Some respondents suggested that faculty complete "internships" within industry to ensure they are in touch with the current market. According to the majority of respondents, recent agricultural communication graduates are adequately prepared to enter the industry, especially in their mastery of technology skills. The respondents placed much value on journalism, marketing, and public relations course work and skills when hiring new employees. In order to stay competitive and current with agricultural communication efforts, academic programs need to educate their students on technology trends -- including how to use electronic communication effectively and efficiently. Academic programs also need to impart knowledge of business and professional ethics. As the agricultural communication industry continues to shrink and become more competitive, several respondents voiced concern that some may be sacrificing ethics to stay in business. The recommendations offered in this study provide a starting point for colleges and universities to consider when evaluating and developing undergraduate curriculum. In addition to conducting future research with other stakeholders, faculty and curriculum specialists must also consider the unique mission of their home institutions, as well as the larger goal of providing students with a well-rounded and balance education.

Book excerpt: In the academic world, the term "science communication" refers both to a set of professions (such as science journalism and public information work) and to an interdisciplinary scholarly research specialization. Much of this research is aimed at improving our understanding of the best ways to communicate complex information, especially to people who are not scientists. Science communication specialists are concerned with giving people useful information about health, environment, and technology – as well as science itself. In order to do this, we also need to improve our understanding of how people think, form opinions, and process information. Additionally, professional practitioners in science communication are engaged in strategic and ethical decisions every day, such as: How should reporters cover the issue of climate change? Should the views of scientists who do not believe that climate change has been caused by human activity be included alongside the views of those who do, in order to give a "balanced" story, or does this mislead the public into thinking that both of these positions are equally accepted within the scientific community? The Encyclopedia of Science and Technology Communication provides information on the entire range of interrelated issues in this interdisciplinary field in one place, along with clear suggestions on where to begin the search for more. Geared towards undergraduate and graduate students in journalism, communication, mass communication, and media studies, as well as towards working journalists, public information officers, and public relations specialists, this encyclopedia introduces this vast, fascinating field while challenging the reader to question assumptions inherent in communication across disciplinary boundaries. Book excerpt: The preparation of school-based agriculture teachers has been a part of public education for over 100 years. However, there is a lack of texts available that address the components of teacher education in agriculture including teacher preparation and related activities. Further study that goes beyond concepts to include practice and applications is required in order to further develop educators in this sector. Preparing Agriculture and Agriscience Educators for the Classroom provides an up-to-date consideration of the best practices for developing and enhancing a complete teacher preparation program and highlights and showcases concepts and applications. It is a mainstay for teacher education and teacher preparation in agriculture and is applicable anywhere in the world where teaching agriculture exists. Covering a range of topics such as field experiences and student learning, this reference work is ideal for researchers, scholars, practitioners, academicians, administrators, instructors, and students.
