Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas H. Huxley An attempt has been made in this short biography to bring into prominence Huxley's scientific work, though much of it was of so specialized a nature as to make a full presentment to other than professed zoologists practically impossible. It has been necessary to incur a large debt to Mr. Leonard Huxley's admirable Life and Letters of Thomas Henry Huxley, the chief source of information, and this is gratefully acknowledged. Reference has been made to the first edition, in two volumes (1900), the abbreviation "Life" being employed. In dealing with the published works, the Memorial Edition of the Scientific Memoirs (Sci. Mem.) and the nine volumes of Collected Essays (Coll. Essays) have been used wherever possible, as being most convenient. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Thomas Henry Huxley, Vol. 2 of 3 With the year 1870 comes another turning-point in Huxley's career. From his return to England in 1850 till 1854 he had endured four years of hard struggle, of hope deferred; his reputation as a zoologist had been established before his arrival, and was more than confirmed by his personal energy and power. When at length settled in the professorship at Jermyn Street, he was so far from thinking himself more than a beginner who had learned to work in one corner of the field of knowledge, still needing deep research into all kindred subjects in order to know the true bearings of his own little portion, that he treated the next six years simply as years of further apprenticeship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Huxley: His Life and Work The great French philosopher, M. Henri Bergson, in his recent Huxley Lecture at Birmingham Uni versity (may 29, 1911) asked: What scientific question, what philosophic problem, is there which did not interest Huxley's luminous intellect - one of the broadest and most comprehensive that nine teenth-century England produced, fertile in great intellects as it was That being so, it can be well understood that no one volume could deal with all the varied aspects of his strenuous and crowded life. Here there is no such attempt. In these few pages the effort has been to show as clear a portrait as possible, to show the man as distinct from his con temporaries, and to indicate his place in the gallery of great British minds. Download or read book The Advance of Science in the Last Half-Century written by Thomas Henry Huxley and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-04 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advance of Science in the Last Half-Century By Thomas Henry Huxley In fact, the history of physical science teaches (and we cannot too carefully take the lesson to heart) that the practical advantages, attainable through its agency, never have been, and never will be, sufficiently attractive to men inspired by the inborn genius of the interpreter of nature, to give them courage to undergo the toils and make the sacrifices which that calling requires from its votaries. That which stirs their pulses is the love of knowledge and the joy of the discovery of the causes of things sung by the old poets--the supreme delight of extending the realm of law and order ever farther towards the unattainable goals of the infinitely great and the infinitely small, between which our little race of life is run. Book excerpt: American Addresses, with a Lecture on the Study of Biology by Thomas Henry Huxley THE THREE HYPOTHESES RESPECTING THE HISTORY OF NATURE. We live in and form part of a system of things of immense diversity and perplexity, which we call Nature; and it is a matter of the deepest interest to all of us that we should form just conceptions of the constitution of that system and of its past history. With relation to this universe, man is, in extent, little more than a mathematical point; in duration but a fleeting shadow; he is a mere reed shaken in the winds of force. But, as Pascal long ago remarked, although a mere reed, he is a thinking reed; and in virtue of that wonderful capacity of thought, he has the power of framing for himself a symbolic conception of the universe, which, although doubtless highly imperfect and inadequate as a picture of the great whole, is yet sufficient to serve him as a chart for the guidance of his practical affairs. It has taken long ages of toilsome and often fruitless labour to enable man to look steadily at the shifting scenes of the phantasmagoria of Nature, to notice what is fixed among her fluctuations, and what is regular among her apparent irregularities; and it is only comparatively lately, within the last few centuries, that the conception of a universal order and of a definite course of things, which we term the course of Nature, has emerged.
