Book excerpt: A particular emphasis in the book is on the integration of design, development and production, so that all departments in an organisation are working together to produce the highest possible quality at the lowest cost. Starting with a discussion of definitions and principles of productivity and quality the guide then goes on to detail quality and productivity assessment and improvement tools in the context of just-in-time manufacturing. In the final two sections of the book, the author goes on to analyse the relationship between productivity and quality and discusses how to implement and maintain productivity and quality projects. He points out common implementation and organisational barriers, and outlines strategies to overcome them.

Book excerpt: The improvement process for a printed circuit board assembly line includes hard and soft improvement. The hard improvement includes changing the manually placed component benches and making them more productive. In addition, the soft improvement is established via simulation of the current assembly line and analysis. Continuous improvement of an assembly line should not stop at a specific research point, even if that research contains very detailed sectors of one assembly line or starting from customer order until the product delivery. Therefore, continuous improvement needs to be vigorous for continuous productivity, improvement, and innovation. The aim of my research in this field is to determine the bottlenecks, find a solution, and develop an improvement method via changing the configuration of the setup on the assembly line until a feasible, optimal configuration is achieved. The software used for this kind of simulation is Arena software. Moreover, perform design of experiment (DOE) for an oven study and find out which variables are more significant to achieve good thermal profile improvement. Minitab software is used for DOE. The bottleneck solution will be determined after obtaining the results from simulation. Validation is determined using the Hypothesis test, which is used to compare the analyzed value with other values and choose the best one among them. The data for the research was collected from a working assembly line. The best engineering assumption for the area is used for no permanent data that could be availalbe like design phase prior to the assembly line, or the data ... collected from the manual stations. In the end, the aim of the research is to achieve a better yield via minimizing the time of PCB assembly process. Hence, the outcome for all of these attempts of improving the PCB assembly line for process improvement is to deliver good quality products, reduce cost, minimize the time to delivery, and meet customer expectations. In order to maintain its market share with other competitors, an electronics manufacturing company needs to continue to improve its manufacturing process to achieve high-quality products with less cost.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the relation of total quality management (TQM) and just-in-time purchasing (JITP) with respect to firms' performance, based on theories from operations management, organization theory, strategic management and marketing. U.S. companies have implemented TQM and JITP techniques to improve their global competitive position. The lack of empirical research on how these techniques effect firms performance makes it necessary to explain their strategic values as management innovations. In this study, a cross-sectional mail survey was used with the target population of firms in the continental United States that have implemented either technique, or both. The results indicate that the extent of TQM and JITP implementation positively correlates with a firm's performance. Furthermore, the relation between JITP and financial and market performance is more significant in those industries that face high as opposed to low foreign competition. In this study, the validity of findings was assessed in four parts: statistical conclusion, internal, construct, and external validity. Each validity type is defined and its threats are discussed. Based on the findings, a revised research model is offered. The author also notes likely avenues of future research for theorists and practitioners.
