In this study, the potential of ultrasonic-assisted membrane anaerobic system (UMAS) was evaluated as alternative and cost effective method for treating POME wastewater to avoid fouling. Throughout the experiment, the removal efficiency of COD was 95% with HRT of 6 days. The BOD removal efficiency was 74% while TSS removal rate was from 91 to 99.5%.The methane gas production efficiency was 82.14%.The UMAS treatment efficiency was greatly improved by UMAS introduction. The membrane fouling and polarization at the membrane surface was significantly reduced.

This study evaluated the performance of the new design of ultrasonic membrane anaerobic system (UMAS) when a palm oil mill effluent (POME) introduces this approach. To fit kinetic study, six steady states were investigated and the results have shown that the mixed liquor volatile suspended solids (MLVSSs) range from 10,400 to 17,350 mg/l while the mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSSs) range from 13,800 to 22,600 mg/l. Three kinetic models of Monod, Contois, and Chen and Hashimoto were used to evaluate the integrated system at organic loading rates ranging from 1 to 15 kg COD/m3/day. The percentage efficiency of COD removal was from 92.8 to 98.3%, and hydraulic retention time (HRT) was from 500.8 to 8.6 days. The influent COD concentrations of the POME ranged from 70,400 to 90,200 mg/l.The integrated technology of UMAS is a more attractive one as it avoids membrane fouling problems.

The conventional anaerobic POME treatment by using anaerobic ponding system requires longer Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) and large space. In this study, the efficiency of Membrane Anaerobic System (MAS) in treating POME was investigated. The MAS is a system that consists of an anaerobic digester, a centrifugal pump and Cross-Flow Ultrafiltration (CUF) Membrane with Molecular Weight Cut-off (MWCO) 200 kDa which have been operated at the pressure of 1.5 bars to 2 bars. Three runs of the experiment had been done on three kinds of the POME samples, 50 % diluted raw POME (Run 1), anaerobic digested POME without addition of mixed culture inoculum (Run 2) and anaerobic digested POME with addition of mixed culture inoculum (Run 3). Throughout the study, the MAS system was performing better in treating anaerobic digested POME in term of overall Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal efficiency in Run 2 and Run 3 compared to Run 1, which overall COD removal efficiency were 83.94 % (Run 2) and 77.98 % (Run 3). The overall Total Suspended Solid (TSS) removal efficiencies of MAS on POME were varied between 81.02 % and 99.95 % in three runs of the experiments. The overall Volatile Suspended Solid (VSS) removal efficiency of MAS on POME treatment was varied between 74.66 % and 87.87 %. The methane gas production was 80.79 %, 80 % and 78.26 % for Run 1, 2, 3 respectively. The addition of inoculum did not show any significant effect on methane production in Run 3. The methane gas production in MAS through anaerobic digestion of POME was found to be linearly in relationship with the VSS removal efficiency and organic loading.

Book excerpt: A study was conducted to verify the status of the application of Ultrasonic Membrane Anaerobic System (UMAS) in wastewater treatment, efficiency of UMAS in methane production and kinetic parameters in sewage sludge on methane production from sewage sludge by using UMAS. UMAS consist of Ultrafiltration membrane for solid-liquid separation with 1.5 - 2.0 bar of operational pressure. The wastewater has been extensively analyzed for six parameters which are pH value, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), volatile fatty acids (VFA), total suspended solid (TSS) and volatile suspended solid (VSS). The reactor is operated at ambient temperature and wrapped with aluminum foil to avoid direct sunlight, which can affect the bacteria. The raw sewage sludge was obtained from Indah Water Air Putih, Kuantan. Sewage sludge is tested using jar test for the chemical requirements to remove small particles in the waste water. The digester operates 5 hours every 4 days for 12 days. The product that been produce contained carbon dioxide and methane gas. Both gases are collected into a syringe that connected with two rubber tube and a glass tube. Compare to aerobic digestion which is expensive method since it used oxygen and anaerobic digestion that requires larger area and slower process, UMAS was being innovated and offer great advantages. Carbon dioxide is removed by manipulated the syringe using 10 ml of sodium hydroxide. Methane gas is measured once every four days. This treatment showed the best solution to treat waste water such as reduction of COD contents and increased percentage of methane gas. Thus, make UMAS is a good alternative for treating wastewater.

Waste sludge samples used in the study were collected from sewage treatment plant of INDAH WATER in Kuantan, Malaysia. The temperature during collection of the raw sewage sludge was 32 oC. The wastewater was stored in a cold room at 4 oC prior to use The study began with some characterization studies to provide understanding of fundamental issues such as conventional separation, ultrasonic and membrane separation. The aim was to obtain optimum operation conditions, maximum methane production as well as overall performance of UMAS in treating sewage sludge, upon which further development on wastewater processes could be developed. Four steady states were attained as a part of this study that considered concentration ranges from 6500 to 2.300 mg/l for mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS). UMAS was used to treat the sewage sludge at organic loading rates ranging from 0.06 to 0.12 kg COD /M3/day, and throughout the experiment, the removal efficiency of COD was from 79% to 93% and the methane gas percentage was between 93 and 85. The ammonia and nitrogen removal efficiency were 56 - 77 and 56 - 72 percentage respectively. The reactor pH is slightly changing during the experimental period with values around 6.8, 7.1, 7.2 and 7.00 in steady state 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. The slight changes in the alkalinity levels of pH indicate process stability. The gas volume was measured daily using a 20-litre displacement bottle. Book excerpt: This study is an extension of a 500 m3 methane recovery test plant study located at Serting Hilir Palm Oil Mill, Negeri Sembilan conducted by our research group on anaerobic treatment of palm oil mill effluent (POME). Biomass washout has become one of the problems faced by our research group because of the continous mixing effluent during anaerobic treatment at POME. Therefore, in this study, anaerobic POME treatment using a scaled down 50 L bioreactor which mimics the 500 m3 bioreactor was carried out to improve biogas production with and without biomass sedimentation. Three series of experiments were conducted under different conditions in terms of biomass sedimentation applied to the system. The first experiment was operated under semi-continuous mode whereas the second and third experiments were operated based on mix and settle mode system. As expected, by retaining biomass in the bioreactor, there was an improvement on the anaerobic process as the system from the second and third experiments were able to operate at organic loading rate (OLR) of 3.4 and 6.0 kg COD/m3/d, respectively while the first experiment only achieved OLR of 3.0 kg COD/m3/d. At these OLR value, the hydraulic retention time (HRT) obtained was 10 days in the third experiment and followed by the first and second experiments with 15 days of HRT. The highest biogas production was achieved from the third experiment which was 2.42 m3/m3 of reactor/d. This was followed by second and first experiments which were 1.55 and 1.20 m3/m3 of reactor/d respectively. The highest methane production rate was also obtained in the third experiment with 0.992 m3/m3 of reactor/d as compared to the second and experiments which were 0.655 and 0.553 m3/m3 of reactor/d, respectively. For COD removal, more than 90% of COD was removed for all the experiments. The experimental data for the first experiment was applied to the two-stage mathematical model of acidogenesis and methanogenesis which were developed by previous researchers. The first experimental data was used because it representes the actual scenario on how the methane recovery test plant was operated in which biomass washout was taken into consideration. In modelling the behaviour of the anaerobic digestion process, the mathematical model was used to simulate the methane production from the anaerobic treatment of POME. From the simulation result, the model was shown to be satisfactory for simulating methane production from the anaerobic treatment of POME.

Book excerpt: Malaysia is the largest producer and exporter of the palm oil covering 49% of world production and 58% of total world exports. Unfortunately, this important economic activity generates an enormous amount of liquid effluent or palm oil mill effluent (POME). The palm oil mill effluent can gives detrimental effects on the environment since the aerobic digestion by natural decay of POME using ponding technique can release a large amount of greenhouse gas such as methane and carbon dioxide. This conventional technique by ponding is not feasible anymore because of the limited space. New techniques of treating the POME using membrane have been developing. This research will discuss on removing the gas contains in POME using hybrid membrane, remove the impurities including COD, BOD and suspended solid contains in POME (Palm oil Mill effluent) using hybrid membrane process. Several pretreatment procedures applied before using membrane treatment such as centrifuge and vacuum pump to remove most of the suspended solid in POME. This study includes analysis on COD, BOD, ph and turbidity. The results shows that the COD, BOD and the turbidity of the POME sample is reduce after each membrane and the percentage removal of impurities is by each membrane is calculated.
