Suppose that firms may switch between different production technologies that take different lengths of time. A natural implication of such a scenario is that not all firms would then offer their commodities in every period, i.e. firms' total supply schedule would become a time-varying quantity. Based on a behavioral cobweb framework, we analytically demonstrate that commodity markets become unstable when firms switch too rapidly between production technologies that take different lengths of time. In particular, we observe that supply distortions lead to endogenous commodity price dynamics due to a mismatch between supply and demand.

After considerable revisions it appeared in a 3rd edition in 1993. The origin, still visible in the 3rd edition, was the joint work of the author with Professor Martin J. Beckmann, documented in two co-authored mono graphs "Spatial Economics" (North-Holland 1985), and "Spatial Structures" (Springer-Verlag 1990). Essential dynamics had, however, been almost com pletely lacking in these works, and the urge to focus the dynamic issues was great. To fill this particular gap was the aim of the previous editions, and so the spatial aspect provided core and focus. In the present edition a substantial quantity of spatial issues have been removed: All those that were dynamic only in the sense that structures were characterized which were structurally stable, or robust in a changing world. The removed material has meanwhile been published as a separate mono graph under the title "Mathematical Location and Land Use Theory" (Springer-Verlag 1996).

We exploit a matched firm-bank database covering all the credit relationships of Italian corporations, together with a natural experiment, to measure idiosyncratic supply-side shocks to credit availability and to estimate a production model augmented with financial frictions. We find that a contraction in credit supply causes a reduction of firm TFP growth and also harms IT-adoption, innovation, exporting, and adoption of superior management practices, while a credit expansion has limited impact. Quantitatively, the credit contraction between 2007 and 2009 accounts for about a quarter of observed the decline in TFP.

Although a number of policy options are available to address the problem, the uncertainty surrounding the future development of the population complicates matters. This paper analyses the economic, intergenerational and welfare effects of several alternative taxation policies that can be used to close the fiscal sustainability gap: immediate tax smoothing, delayed tax smoothing and balanced budget policies. A distinction is made between a consumption tax and a labour income tax. In addition, the influence of demographic uncertainty on the results of these policies is analysed from a number of perspectives. Simulated population shocks show the effect of demographic volatility on macroeconomic and fiscal variables. Stochastic simulations are presented to produce probabilistic bounds for the future development of the economic outcomes and to analyse the issue of optimal fiscal policy under uncertainty.
