The large excesses of neutrons over protons in heavy systems near the valley of stability, coupled with the tendency for the charge-to-mass ratio to be preserved in the fission process, results in fission fragments that lie well to the neutron-rich side of stability. The excitation energy of the primary fragments produced at scission results in the evaporation of neutrons (Fig 1) to produce secondary fragments whose excitation energy is dissipated through [gamma]-ray emission. In the last few years the study of such [gamma] rays has produced a dramatic increase in the available information on the structure of neutron-rich nuclei. This renaissance in fission-fragment spectroscopy has been due primarily to the much increased resolving power of large arrays of germanium [gamma]-ray detectors such as Euroball and Gammasphere. Through the improved detection efficiency and high granularity, these arrays have made it possible to obtain reasonable rates for the detection of three coincident [gamma] rays out of the cascades of multiplicity ten that are typically produced in spontaneous fission. In addition to the determination of the energies of excited levels, developments in spectroscopic techniques have allowed for information to be deduced regarding the spins and parities [1,2] and lifetimes [3,4] of such states of extreme isospin. In this paper we present research that has been carried out using the Euroball and Eurogam arrays to detect [gamma] rays emitted from spontaneously fissioning 248Cm and 252Cf. The paper focuses on three sub-areas of current activity, namely, the measurement of yields of secondary fragment pairs, the measurement of state lifetimes at around spin 10, and recent measurements of g-factors of excited states in fission fragments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decay spectroscopy of neutron rich nuclei near doubly magic 78Ni [78-Nickel] is relevant to nuclear structure and astrophysics as well as reactor and neutrino physics. [upper case beta]-decay [betadecay] calorimetry studies are essential to reconstruct the decay strength function and is used to overcome the problems arising from the high density of states leading to nuclear Pandemonium. The Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer, currently located in HRIBF at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, collected data on 25 fission products of 238U [238- Uranium] during a run in March 2015. Analysis of the 84,̳85,̳86Br [84, 85 and 86-Bromine] data from the March 2015 run indicates a significant modification of the [upper case beta]-strength [betastrength] function when compared with previous measurements for all three nuclei, including the introduction of new high energy states not previously detected. The cases of 84,̳85,̳86Br will be discussed in concert with shell model predictions. 85Br [85-Bromine] is a singly magic N=50 nucleus. Through the study of N=49,50,51 nuclei the decay properties around a neutron shell closure governed by the interplay between core and valence nucleon excitations and Gamow-Teller decay in a 78Ni [78-Nickel] core can be understood and provide a pinpoint for the study of more exotic nuclei.

Book excerpt: A beam of 36/16S20 at 215 MeV was used to bombard a 300 ugcm-2 thick target of 208/82Pb126 in order to initiate deep-inelastic and multi-nucleon transfer reactions. The I-ray decay of the reaction products was studied using the CLARA array of escape suppressed germanium detectors which was coupled to the large-angular-acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, in which the velocity, mass, atomic number and kinetic energy of the reaction products was measured. Determination of the velocity and mass has allowed Doppler corrected [gamma]-ray spectra to be obtained for each individual projectile-like nuclide to be produced. Seven neutron-rich isotopes of Cl have been populated and their decay by [gamma]-ray emission has been studied. Decay schemes have been constructed and compared to the results of shell-model calculations. Previously unreported transitions have been observed in 38Cl, 40Cl, 41Cl and 42Cl. ___.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since several elements between Z = 20-28 are refractory in their nature, their neutron-rich isotopes are rarely available as low energy Radioactive Ion Beams (RIB) in ordinary Isotope Separator On-Line facilities [1-4]. These low energy RIBs would be especially interesting to have available under conditions which allow high-resolution beta-decay spectroscopy, ion-trapping and laser-spectroscopy. As an example, availability of these beams would open a way for research which could produce interesting and important data on neutron-rich nuclei around the doubly magic {sup 78}Ni. One way to overcome the intrinsic difficulty of producing these beams is to rely on the chemically unselective Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) technique [5]. Quasi- and deep-inelastic reactions, such as {sup 197}Au({sup 65}Cu, X)Y, could be used to produce these nuclei in existing IGISOL facilities, but before they can be successfully incorporated into the IGISOL concept their kinematics must be well understood. Therefore the reaction kinematics part of this study was first performed at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory using its 88'' cyclotron and, based on those results, a specialized target chamber was built[6]. The target chamber shown in Fig. 1 was recently tested on-line at the Jyvaaskylaa IGISOL facility. Yields of mass-separated radioactive projectile-like species such as {sup 62,63}Co are about 0.8 ions/s/pnA, corresponding to about 0.06 % of the total IGISOL efficiency for the products that hit the Ni-degrader. (The current maximum 443 MeV {sup 65}Cu beam intensity at Jyvaaskylaa is about 20 pnA.) This total IGISOL efficiency is a product of two coupled loss factors, namely inadequate thermalization and the intrinsic IGISOL efficiency. In our now tested chamber, about 9 % of the Co recoils are thermalized in the owing He gas (p{sub He}=300 mbar) and about 0.7 % of them are converted into the mass-separated ion beams. In the future, both of these physical/chemical conditions can be suppressed by introducing Ar as a buffer gas and by relying on selective laser re-ionization. This combination will produce isobarically pure beams and it will increase the existing yields by at least a factor of 100, making this overall approach to the study of neutron rich nuclei even more attractive.
