Book Synopsis Graphite Intercalation Compounds I by : Hartmut Zabel
Download or read book Graphite Intercalation Compounds I written by Hartmut Zabel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The progress of materials science depends on the development of novel materials and the development of novel experimental techniques. The research on graphite intercalation compounds combines both aspects: new compounds with strikingly new and anisotropic properties have been synthesized and analyzed during the past couple of years by means of state-of-the-art experimental methods. At the same time, the preparation of the compounds already known has improved con siderably, giving increased reliability and reproducibility of the experimental results. The high quality experimental data now available have stimulated theo retical work. Moreover, the theoretical work has had a great impact on further experimental studies, with the effect of a much improved understanding of this class of materials. This volume is dedicated to a thorough description of all relevant experimen tal and theoretical aspects of the structural and dynamical properties of graphite intercalation compounds. Because of the large number of topics, a second vol ume, which is now in preparation, will follow and will treat the electronic, transport, magnetic, and optical properties. The second volume will also contain a chapter on applications of graphite intercalation compounds. There have been a number of reviews written on selected aspects of these compounds in various journals and conference proceedings during the last couple of years, but this is the first comprehensive review since the thorough overview provided by M.S. Dresselhaus and G. Dresselhaus appeared ten years ago.

Book Synopsis Graphite Intercalation Compounds II by : Hartmut Zabel
Download or read book Graphite Intercalation Compounds II written by Hartmut Zabel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research on graphite intercalation compounds often acts as a forerunner for research in other sciences. For instance, the concept of staging, which is fundamental to graphite intercalation compounds, is also relevant to surface science in connection with adsorbates on metal surfaces and to high-temperature superconducting oxide layer materials. Phonon-folding and mode-splitting effects are not only basic to graphite intercalation compounds but also to polytypical systems such as supercon ductors, superlattices, and metal and semiconductor superlattices. Charge transfer effects playa tremendously important role in many areas, and they can be most easily and fundamentally studied with intercalated graphite. This list could be augmented with many more examples. The important message, however, is that graphite inter calation compounds represent a class of materials that not only can be used for testing a variety of condensed-matter concepts, but also stimulates new ideas and approaches. This volume is the second of a two-volume set. The first volume addressed the structural and dynamical aspects of graphite intercalation compounds, together with the chemistry and intercalation of new compounds. This second volume provides an up-to-date status report from expert researchers on the transport, magnetic, elec tronic and optical properties ofthis unique class of materials. The band-structure cal culations of the various donor and acceptor compounds are discussed in depth, and detailed reviews are provided ofthe experimental verification ofthe electronic struc ture in terms of their photoemission spectra and optical properties.

Book Synopsis Fundamental Aspects of Silicon Oxidation by : Yves J. Chabal
Download or read book Fundamental Aspects of Silicon Oxidation written by Yves J. Chabal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-04-24 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for a book dealing specifically with elementary processes in silicon oxidation was formulated after a stimulating symposium that I organized at the American Physical Society meeting in March, 1998. The symposium, en titled "Dynamics of silicon etching and oxidation", explored the mechanisms governing silicon oxidation. With three experimental talks (Hines, Weldon and Gibson) and two theoretical presentations (Pasquarello and Pantelides), it provided a good cross-section of the recent efforts to characterize the in terfacial region of silicon oxide grown on silicon. The novelty of this work comes from the present experimental and theo retical advances that allow the investigation of the formation of ultra-thin silicon oxides. Although structural characterization of bulk silicon oxides and electrical characterization of thin oxides and their interfaces with silicon have produced an extensive body of work over more than forty years, a mechanis tic understanding of the initial oxidation processes has remained elusive. In the past, both the experimental and theoretical efforts have been thwarted by the complexity of dealing with the formation of a mostly amorphous oxide on a crystalline substrate. In this book we present a survey of the state-of-the-art methods, both ex perimental and theoretical, specifically dealing with the issue of amorphous dielectric growth. Each chapter critically reviews and cross-correlates infor mation provided by experimental techniques, such as microscopy, spectro scopy, or scattering, with results obtained using theoretical methods, such as ab initio electronic structure calculations, molecular dynamics, and Monte Carlo simulations.
Book Synopsis Point Defects in Semiconductors and Insulators by : Johann-Martin Spaeth
Download or read book Point Defects in Semiconductors and Insulators written by Johann-Martin Spaeth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The precedent book with the title "Structural Analysis of Point Defects in Solids: An introduction to multiple magnetic resonance spectroscopy" ap peared about 10 years ago. Since then a very active development has oc curred both with respect to the experimental methods and the theoretical interpretation of the experimental results. It would therefore not have been sufficient to simply publish a second edition of the precedent book with cor rections and a few additions. Furthermore the application of the multiple magnetic resonance methods has more and more shifted towards materials science and represents one of the important methods of materials analysis. Multiple magnetic resonances are used less now for "fundamental" studies in solid state physics. Therefore a more "pedestrian" access to the meth ods is called for to help the materials scientist to use them or to appreciate results obtained by using these methods. We have kept the two introduc tory chapters on conventional electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of the precedent book which are the base for the multiple resonance methods. The chapter on optical detection of EPR (ODEPR) was supplemented by sections on the structural information one can get from "forbidden" transitions as well as on spatial correlations between defects in the so-called "cross relaxation spectroscopy". High-field ODEPR/ENDOR was also added. The chapter on stationary electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) was supplemented by the method of stochastic END OR developed a few years ago in Paderborn which is now also commercially available.
Download or read book Quasicrystals written by J.-B. Suck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides an introduction to all aspects of the physics of quasicrystals. The chapters, each written by an expert in this field, cover quasiperiodic tilings and the modeling of the atomic structure of quasicrystals. The electronic density of states and the calculation of the electronic structure play a key role in this introduction, as does an extensive discussion of the atomic dynamics. The study of defects in quasicrystals by high resolution electron microscopy and the computer simulations of defects and fracture in decorated tilings are important subjects for the application of these aperiodic crystals.

Book Synopsis Microcluster Physics by : Satoru Sugano
Download or read book Microcluster Physics written by Satoru Sugano and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at providing graduate students and researchers with funda mental knowledge indispensable for entering the new field of "microclus 3 ters". Microclusters consisting of 10 to 10 atoms exhibit neither the pro perties of the corresponding bulk nor those of the corresponding molecule of a few atoms. The microclusters may be considered to form a new phase of materials lying between macroscopic solids and microscopic particles such as atoms and molecules, showing both macroscopic and microscopic features. However, research into such"a riew phase has been left untouched until recent years by the development of the quantum theory of matter. The microscopic features of microclusters were first revealed by ob serving anomalies of the mass spectrum of a Na cluster beam at specific sizes, called magic numbers. Then it was experimentally confirmed that the magic numbers come from the shell structure of valence electrons. Being stimulated by these epoch-making findings in metal microclusters and aided by progress of the experimental techniques producing relatively dense, non interacting micro clusters of various sizes in the form of micro cluster beams, the research field of microclusters has developed rapidly in these 5 to 7 years. The progress is also due to the improvement of computers and com putational techniques, which have made it possible to perform ab initio cal culations of the atomic and electronic structure of smaller microclusters, as well as to carry out computer simulations of their dynamics.
