The basis for the process is the absorption of H2S into a polar organic solvent where it is reacted with dissolved sulfur dioxide to form elemental sulfur. After sulfur is crystallized from solution, the solvent is stripped to remove dissolved gases and water formed by the reaction. The SO2 is generated by burning a portion of the sulfur in a furnace where the heat of combustion is used to generate high pressure steam. The SO2 is absorbed into part of the lean solvent to form the solution necessary for the first step. The kinetics of the reaction between H2S and SO2 dissolved in mixtures of N, N-Dimethylaniline (DMA)/ Diethylene Glycol Monomethyl Ether and DMA/Triethylene Glycol Dimethyl Ether was studied by following the temperature rise in an adiabatic calorimeter. This irreversible reaction was found to be first-order in both H2S and SO2, with an approximates heat of reaction of 28 kcal/mole of SO2. The sole products of the reaction appear to be elemental sulfur and water. The presence of DMA increases the value of the second-order rate constant by an order of magnitude over that obtained in the glycol ethers alone. Addition of other tertiary aromatic amines enhances the observed kinetics; heterocyclic amines (e.g., pyridine derivatives) have been found to be 10 to 100 times more effective as catalysts when compared to DMA.

This corrosion may be prevented by separating and removing hydrogen sulfide from the biogas. There are multiple technologies available to remove hydrogen sulfide (such as the gas-gas membrane tested in this thesis); however, evaluating the effectiveness of hydrogen sulfide removal in an inexpensive manner is difficult to do. A device was constructed capable of a virtually simultaneous high precision volumetric flow and concentration measurements on moving biogas. The volumetric flow was measured by sampling the pressure from the center of two different points along a rigid tube and correlating pressure sensor voltage to the maximum velocity measured with a velocity probe. The hydrogen sulfide and methane concentrations were measured using chemical gas sensors. A mass balance was completed around a reverse selective membrane system with the calculated difference between flows based on known input and measured output concentrations coming within 15% of each other. Though the volumetric flow measurements were in doubt, this device was able to determine that using a 20 cm2 polyamide membrane under low pressures suitable for a digester (2 PSI) will increase methane concentration in biogas from 60% to 62% but is not effective at removing 1000 ppm of hydrogen sulfide. This device was primarily designed for determining the feasibility of adapting a membrane system to a farm scale biogas generation process.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to evaluate a new heat exchanger process as a method for removing hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas from geothermal steam upstream of a power plant turbine. The process utilizes a heat exchanger to condense geothermal steam so that noncondensable gases (including H2S) can be removed in the form of a concentrated vent stream. Ultimate disposal of the removed H2S gas may then be accomplished by use of other processes such as the commercially available Stretford process. The clean condensate is reevaporated on the other side of the heat exchanger using the heat removed from the condensing geothermal steam. The necessary heat transfer is induced by maintaining a slight pressure difference, and consequently a slight temperature difference, between the two sides of the heat exchanger. Evaluation of this condensing and reboiling process was performed primarily through the testing of a small-scale 14 m2 (150 ft2) vertical tube evaporator heat exchanger at The Geysers Power Plant in northern California. The field test results demonstrated H2S removal rates consistently better than 90 percent, with an average removal rate of 94 percent. In addition, the removal rate for all noncondensable gases is about 98 percent. Heat transfer rates were high enough to indicate acceptable economics for application of the process on a commercial scale. The report also includes an evaluation of the cost and performance of various configurations of the system, and presents design and cost estimates for a 2.5 MWe and a 55 MWe unit.

Book excerpt: A method for removing hydrogen sulfide from a sour-gas stream is investigated and found to be promising. The method oxidizes hydrogen sulfide to sulfuric acid by reducing aqueous bromine to hydrobromic acid in solution. Sulfuric acid is concentrated to eliminate its bromine content prior to being removed from the system, while the remaining hydrobromic acid solution is electrolyzed to regenerate aqueous bromine and produce hydrogen. The aqueous bromine solution does not react with hydrocarbon components common to natural gas including methane and ethane. This allows the process to both sweeten sour-gas and convert its hydrogen sulfide content to sulfuric acid in a single step. Specific reactor conditions were found to produce sulfur instead of sulfuric acid. Hydrobromic acid electrolysis requires less than half the energy required by water electrolysis and is an inherently flexible load that can shed or absorb power to balance supply and demand. Thus the electrolysis of hydrobromic acid may provide a route to produce inexpensive hydrogen and improve the electric grid.

Book excerpt: An advanced process for the separation of hydrogen sulfide from coal gasification product streams through an electrochemical membrane is being developed. H2S is removed from the syn-gas stream, split into hydrogen, which enriches the syn-gas, and sulfur, which can be condensed from an inert gas sweep stream. The process allows removal of H2S without cooling the gas stream and with negligible pressure loss through the separator. The process is economically attractive by the lack of adsorbents and the lack of a Claus process for sulfur recovery. Research conducted during the present quarter is highlighted, with an emphasis on progress towards the goal of an economically viable H2S removal technology for use in coal gasification facilities providing polished fuel for co-generation coal fired electrical power facilities and Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell electrical power facilities. Polishing application of this technology to coal gasification synthesis gas has been demonstrated with H2S removals as high as 89.1% recorded. No successful runs with stainless steel housings have yet been achieved. However, since stoichiometric CO2 removal with stainless steel housings has been achieved, H2S removal is achievable.

Book excerpt: Abstract Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an environmentally hazardous, corrosive, and toxic gas, mostly generated in gas and oil industry. For small-scale natural gas processing sites (less than 10 tonne S/day), the use of regenerable iron oxide adsorbent to adsorb H2S from natural gas is still an economical and effective method. The objective of this research project was to understand the performance of an iron oxide adsorbent, recently emerging in the Canadian market, in removing H2S from gas streams. To accomplish this, the breakthrough behaviors of H2S adsorption in a fixed-bed reactor under elevated pressures were studied. The effects of variations in superficial velocity from 0.09 m/s to 0.26 m/s, operating pressure from 4 to 50 atm absolute, and the height of the fixed-bed from 11.7 cm to 24.5 cm on breakthrough curves and sulfur loading were investigated. In all the experiments, the H2S concentration profiles of the exiting gas from the reactor were measured until the bed was saturated. It was found that the shape of the breakthrough curves depend on the superficial velocity and the inlet H2S concentration in gas streams. Under both higher superficial velocity and higher inlet H2S concentration, the shape of the breakthrough curve becomes steeper. The sulfur loading of the adsorbent depends on the superficial velocity, the inlet H2S concentration in gas streams, and the bed height. The sulfur loading decreases as the superficial velocity and the inlet H2S concentration increase, but increases as the bed height increases. The change of operating pressure does not have a significant effect on the shape of the breakthrough curve or sulfur loading of the adsorbent. The investigation was also extended using the regenerated adsorbents. A mathematical formula was developed to describe the breakthrough curves.
