Book excerpt: Production of low Btu fuel gas for use in gas turbines imposes stringent requirements on a gas cleaning process to prevent corrosion and erosion of turbine blades. The gas must be cleaned at high temperatures (1200°-1700°F to achieve maximum efficiency. Battelle-Northwest is developing a venturi scrubber which utilizes a molten salt as the working fluid to clean the gas. The venturi utilizes kinetic energy in the gas to disperse the molten salt in the gas phase. High rates of mass transfer generally obtain as the salt extracts sulfur from the fuel gas. The high velocity salt droplets impinge upon particles to yield effective agglomeration and collection. A highly efficient de-entrainer-demister collects and returns the salt to the feed supply. Laboratory studies have demonstrated process feasibility and a pilot plant has been constructed to accept 50-100 SCFM of fuel gas from Battelle's fixed bed gasifier. Gasifier and pilot plant gas scrubbing equipment are in shakedown operation.

These items include the piping support structure and piping and process vessels or equipment that must be ''alonized'' for corrosion protection. Major procurements have been initiated. Orders have been placed with low bidders for procurement of the extraction and regeneration columns and for the major portion of the trace heaters needed. The bid package for piping, coarse de-entrainer, salt cooler, venturi feed tank, and venturi (all of which will require ''alonizing'') has been submitted to the Purchasing Department for distribution to selected vendors. A comprehensive stress analysis on piping and support structures has been conducted with the aid of well known computer codes by personnel from the Engineering Department. Portions of the PDU have been dismantled and some site preparation work has been completed to facilitate impending construction.

Book excerpt: The Battelle Fused Salt Scrubbing Process has been subjected to exhaustive engineering analysis and optimized for operation in continuous mode. Engineering analyses are nearly complete and design drafting is well underway. Detailed engineering analysis has proved somewhat more time consuming than originally envisioned. The process has been operated in batch process mode with continuous recirculation of the extracting salt from the de-entrainer to the venturi scrubber. In this configuration, operation began with contact of the gas with clean salt and terminated when the extraction capacity of the salt was exhausted. The salt was subsequently regenerated, again in batch mode, or was replaced with fresh salt. Highly efficient extraction of sulfur compounds and particle scrubbing was demonstrated and it was shown that a vertically oriented venturi scrubber was an efficient device with which to circulate the molten salt scrubbing liquid. No mechanical pump was required. It remains to be demonstrated that the salt can be continuously regenerated simultaneously with extraction of sulfur compounds and particles. To achieve continuous operation with simultaneous extraction of sulfur compounds, particle removal, and regeneration of the extraction capacity of the salt a substantially revised process has been conceived.

Book excerpt: In this phase of work the Process Development Unit (PDU) is to be remodeled by incorporation of appropriate subsystems to permit operation in continuous process mode. Evidence has accumulated which indicated the Na2CO3 - K2CO3 - Li2CO3 ternary eutectic containing appreciable sulfide ion is much more corrosive than similar systems containing appreciable added CaCO3. It is concluded this is due to the tendency of Ca/sup + +/ to combine with S/sup - -/ to reduce the thermodynamic activity of the latter. The lowered S/sup - -/ activity results in lessened corrosivity. CaCO3 will be added at 20 mole percent to salt compositions employed in future PDU runs. Equipment failure experience and plugging due to corrosion products is detailed and proposed methods of alleviating the problems are described.
