Book Synopsis International Perspectives on Psychological Science: Leading themes by : Paul Bertelson
Download or read book International Perspectives on Psychological Science: Leading themes written by Paul Bertelson and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays appearing in these two volumes are based on Keynote (Vol. 1) and State-of-the-Art (Vol. 2) Lectures delivered at the XXVth International Congress of Psychology in Brussels, July 1992. The Brussels Congress was the latest in a series of conferences which are organized at regular intervals under the auspices of the International Union of Psychological Science (IUPsyS), the main international organization in the field of Scientific Psychology. The first of those meetings took place in Paris in 1889. An important function of the International Congresses is to promote communication between different specializations in psychology. Speakers were therefore asked to present lectures and discussions in their own fields of study, in a way that would be accessible to fellow psychologists active in other fields. State-of-the-Art lecturers were specifically asked to prepare a tutorial review on a topic which, in the view of the Program Committee, had recently given rise to particularly important developments. These contributions are included in Volume Two. Keynote lecturers were left free to address whatever subject they felt was of greatest interest. The chapters in Volume 1 are preceded by the Presidential Address by Mark R. Rosenzweig.

Book Synopsis Goal Directed Behavior by : Michael Frese
Download or read book Goal Directed Behavior written by Michael Frese and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-29 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985, this book was an attempt at a comprehensive review of the psychology of action in various areas of psychology. It is also an attempt to bridge two languages and traditions in psychology: German and Anglo-American. Although Anglo-American psychology had had an enormous influence on German psychology, the influence had not gone the other way around – at least not in recent years. Therefore, this book attempts to get the two traditions to speak with each other. The main article, from one language area, and the following discussion, from the other language area, together result in an extensive treatment of an action-theoretic approach in the respective psychological area; thus, both the main article and "discussion" should be read together.

Book Synopsis Annals of Theoretical Psychology by : Leendert Mos
Download or read book Annals of Theoretical Psychology written by Leendert Mos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some one hundred years ago the founding fathers optimistically launched psychology as a science. The premise was that the new science must break away from its parental ties to philosophy and confine itself to gathering data, preferably in the psychology laboratory. There is little doubt that this early commitment to an "observation and accumulation of data only" policy was helpful in the launching of the new science. Some idea of how critical this move to empiricism was can be gathered from the following quotation taken from Wolman (1973, p. 32): It was not an easy task to transform the old "mental philosophy" into a natural science. Natural science used observation and experimentation; they observed their subject matter, as it were, from without. Wundt's psychology was supposed to study observable stimuli and responses, but there was so much that was unobservable in psychology. Although the launching was eventually a success, there is little doubt that the high hopes of the founding fathers have not materialized.

Book Synopsis Innovation and Expansion in Translation Process Research by : Isabel Lacruz
Download or read book Innovation and Expansion in Translation Process Research written by Isabel Lacruz and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cognitive research in translation and interpreting has reached a critical threshold of maturity that is triggering rapid expansion along exciting new paths that potentially lead to deeper connections with other disciplines. Innovation and Expansion in Translation Process Research reflects this broadening scope and reach, emphasizing ongoing methodological innovations, diversification of research topics and questions, and rich interactions with adjacent fields of research. The contributions to the volume can be grouped within four loosely defined themes: advances in traditional topics in translation process research, including problems in translation, translation competence or expertise, and specialization of translators; advances in research into the emotional or affective aspects of translating and translator training; innovations in machine translation and post-editing; expansion of cognitively-oriented translation studies to include editing processes and reception studies. This timely volume highlights the burgeoning growth, diversification, and connectivity of translation process research.
Book Synopsis Behavioral Evolution and Integrative Levels by : G. Greenberg
Download or read book Behavioral Evolution and Integrative Levels written by G. Greenberg and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984. In this collection of essays, Schneirla is identified as a scientist and citizen unafraid to hold and present unpopular ideas. Schneirla had always been opposed to the hereditarian views that allowed for the politicalization of psychology and spoke out early against the idea of the genetic basis of behavior. It is fitting that his ideas, which still form the nexus of the major theoretical criticism of classical ethology, now can be seen to stand in opposition to the hereditarian views of socio-biology.
Download or read book Aggression and War written by Jo Groebel and published by . This book was released on 1989-03-23 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from a meeting of natural and social scientists, this interdisciplinary book aims to summarize the main issues regarding the problem of human aggression, as well as human beliefs about the subject. This study brings together internationally known authorities and presents their recent contributions which range in complexity from the physiological to individual aggression, group conflict and international war. The study concludes with a multi-level approach to the problems of aggression and war. In nontechnical language suitable for general science readers, the book provides a valuable framework for the development of ideas and new attitudes in a field rife with misconceptions.
