This book was released on 2007 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecosystem monitoring is a mandate of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), and monitoring the plankton, which are at the base of aquatic food chains, is an important component in any monitoring programme. These changes have occurred over decadal time scales and have been observed by means of the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) programme. In the context of the idea of DFO setting up of monitoring programmes in new areas, it was decided that it would be timely to hold a Workshop to discuss the utility of CPR to such programmes. The main Workshop objectives were: to discuss the role of CPR sampling in current monitoring programmes; to examine the desirability for establishing new lines (e.g., Gulf of St Lawrence, Great Lakes, Arctic); to share information about CPR data use among current users and potential future users; to compare CPR data on plankton distribution and abundance to results obtained using other methods; and to make recommendations. This document presents an overview of presentations and ensuing discussions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at providing students and researchers an advanced integrative overview on zooplankton ecology, covering marine and freshwater organisms, from microscopic phagotrophic protists, to macro-jellyfishes and active fish larvae. The first book section addresses zooplanktonic organisms and processes, the second section is devoted to zooplankton spatial and temporal distribution patterns and trophic dynamics, and the final section is dedicated to emergent methodological approaches (e.g., omics). Book chapters include comprehensive synthesis, observational and manipulative studies, and sediment-based analysis, a vibrant imprint of benthic-pelagic coupling and ecosystem connectivity. Most chapters also address the impacts of anticipated environmental changes (e.g., warming, acidification).

Book excerpt: The proliferation of harmful phytoplankton in marine ecosystems can cause massive fish kills, contaminate seafood with toxins, impact local and regional economies and dramatically affect ecological balance. Real-time observations are essential for effective short-term operational forecasting, but observation and modelling systems are still being developed. This volume provides guidance for developing real-time and near real-time sensing systems for observing and predicting plankton dynamics, including harmful algal blooms, in coastal waters. The underlying theory is explained and current trends in research and monitoring are discussed.Topics covered include: coastal ecosystems and dynamics of harmful algal blooms; theory and practical applications of in situ and remotely sensed optical detection of microalgal distributions and composition; theory and practical applications of in situ biological and chemical sensors for targeted species and toxin detection; integrated observing systems and platforms for detection; diagnostic and predictive modelling of ecosystems and harmful algal blooms, including data assimilation techniques; observational needs for the public and government; and future directions for research and operations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluctuations and declines in marine fish populations have caused growing concern among marine scientists, fisheries managers, commercial and recreational fishers, and the public. Sustaining Marine Fisheries explores the nature of marine ecosystems and the complex interacting factors that shape their productivity. The book documents the condition of marine fisheries today, highlighting species and geographic areas that are under particular stress. Challenges to achieving sustainability are discussed, and shortcomings of existing fisheries management and regulation are examined. The volume calls for fisheries management to adopt a broader ecosystem perspective that encompasses all relevant environmental and human influences. Sustaining Marine Fisheries offers new approaches to building workable fisheries management institutions, improving scientific data, and developing management tools. The book recommends ways to change current practices that encourage overexploitation of fish resources. It will be of special interest to marine policymakers and ecologists, fisheries regulators and managers, fisheries scientists and marine ecologists, fishers, and concerned individuals.
