Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reproductive biology is more than the development of techniques for helping with too little or too much breeding. While some of the relevant techniques are useful for individual species, technical developments have to be backed up by thorough biological understanding of the background behind the problems. This book is therefore threefold; (1) it provides a snapshot of the state of the art in terms of species-specific reproductive technologies, whether for individual animals or whole taxonomic groups; (2) it sets the reproductive problems in context and emphasizes the links between animal-based problems and the wider world, e.g. reproductive fitness and (3) it looks forward and presents realistic assessments of how effective some of the more recently developed techniques in reproductive technology might be at combating extinctions. This is a wide-ranging book that will be relevant to anyone involved in reproductive biology or in species conservation and provides provide them some useful perspectives about the real utility of current and emerging technologies. It has contributions from experts in reproduction and related fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Biosciences Division (Code 51) of the Naval Command, Control and Ocean Surveillance Center, RDT & E Division (NRaD) investigated and evaluated reintroduction to the wild as an option for managing the Navy's marine mammals. Data were gathered from expert sources and two NRaD-organized workshops. The first workshop involved experts in reintroduction and marine mammal research and management. It focused on identifying requirements for the reintroduction of captive marine mammals to the wild in general. Closing statements made by the participants are provided in appendices. The second workshop involved NRaD marine mammal experts and focused on applying the first workshop's general findings to an evaluation of the potential for reintroducing Navy marine mammals specifically. This report summarizes the workshops' findings, suggests a general model for planning a reintroduction program, and considers issues relevant to the Navy's marine mammal programs. This report recommends that the development of the required reintroduction methods and technologies could benefit the conservation of endangered species, but that the continued provision of lifetime care and maintenance for the Navy's marine mammals is the preferable option in terms of cost effectiveness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 25 years, primatologists have speculated that intelligence, at least in monkeys and apes, evolved as an adaptation to the complicated social milieu of hard-won friendships and bitterly contested rivalries. Yet the Balkanization of animal research has prevented us from studying the same problem in other large-brained, long-lived animals, such as hyenas and elephants, bats and sperm whales. Social complexity turns out to be widespread indeed. For example, in many animal societies one individual's innovation, such as tool use or a hunting technique, may spread within the group, thus creating a distinct culture. As this collection of studies on a wide range of species shows, animals develop a great variety of traditions, which in turn affect fitness and survival. The editors argue that future research into complex animal societies and intelligence will change the perception of animals as gene machines, programmed to act in particular ways and perhaps elevate them to a status much closer to our own. At a time when humans are perceived more biologically than ever before, and animals as more cultural, are we about to witness the dawn of a truly unified social science, one with a distinctly cross-specific perspective?
