Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Christianity in the West has often been told, but the history of Christianity in the East is not as well known. The seed was the same: the good news of Jesus Christ for the whole world, which Christians call "the gospel." But it was sown by different sowers; it was planted in different soil; it grew with a different flavor; and it was gathered by different reapers. It is too often forgotten that the faith moved east across Asia as early as it moved west into Europe. Western church history tends to follow Paul to Philippi and to Rome and on across Europe to the conversion of Constantine and the barbarians. With some outstanding exceptions, only intermittently has the West looked beyond Constantinople as its center. It was a Christianity that has for centuries remained unashamedly Asian. A History of Christianity in Asia makes available immense amounts of research on religious pluralism of Asia and how Christianity spread long before the modern missionary movement went forth in the shelter of Western military might. Invaluable for historians of Asia and scholars of mission, it is stimulating for all readers interested in Christian history. --

Ai.behtus Pietebs. 1 That Japan is about: is large as the State of California, or as the States of.Michigan, Wisconsin, and half of Illinois, put together. 2 That it is a very beautiful country, and so mountainous that not more than one-tenth is under cultivation. 3 That in this space live forty-five millions of people, more than in England or in France. 4 That, although there is no immigration, the population is rapidly increasing and in thirty years more, will probably amount to one hundred millions. 5 That the government is a constitutional monarchy, the Emperor being assisted by a Cabinet, and by a Congress chosen by the people. Suffrage is limited by a property qualification. 0 That as a whole the country is well governed, under laws similar to our own, efficiently administered. Life and property are as safe everywhere in Japan as is the United States. 7 That Japan lias railroads, steamships, an army and a navy, medical science, electric telegraphs, telephones, street railways, sanitary regulations, and everything that marks a civilized, progressive community. 8 That it has an excellent school.system, so well appreciated by the people. that, though one-third the expenses arc met by fees from pupils, 81 per cent of the boys and "1 per cent of the girls attend school. 9 That heathenism is still strong in Japan, although many of the more intelligent are utterly indifferent to any religion. This class is rapidly increasing. 10 That, whether heathen or infidel, in spite of all their intelligence and progress, the people of Japan are without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world, walking in...

Book excerpt: In Ecumenical Foundations Dr. Hogg has given us the definitive history of the origin and the first three decades of the International Missionary Council. Here is also a highly important contribution to our knowledge of missionary cooperation of significant phases of the early stages and development of the Ecumenical Movement. --Kenneth Scott, Latourette of Yale University This book appears at an opportune, one might say, a providential, moment. It focuses attention on the history and significance of the most creative international organization of these last revolutionary decades. It also provides answers to many questions, and clarifies many concepts which perplex intelligent Christians in all the churches. It is impossible to understand the background, genius, and problems of the Ecumenical Movement without recourse to this pioneer attempt to chart its course. --John A. Mackay, of Princeton Theological Seminary Dr. Hogg has done a magnificent piece of work and has provided an historical record of great importance. It is the indispensable volume for understanding one of the main streams of Christian unity. There is no other place where one can get so good a picture of the way in which the missionary movement has led to the present stage in teh ecumenical movement. --Samuel McCrea Cavert, General Secretary, National Council of the Churches of Christ

Part II examines the complex relationship between Christianity and various dimensions of Japanese society, such as literature, politics, social welfare, education for women, and interaction with other religious traditions. Part III focuses on resources for the study of Christianity in Japan and provides a guide to archival collections, research institutes, and bibliographies. Based on both Japanese and Western scholarship, readers will find this volume to be a fascinating and important guide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan closed its doors to foreigners for over two hundred years because of religious and political instability caused by Christianity. By 1859, foreign residents were once again living in treaty ports in Japan, but edicts banning Christianity remained enforced until 1873. Drawing on an impressive array of English and Japanese sources, Ion investigates a crucial era in the history of Japanese-American relations the formation of Protestant missions. He reveals that the transmission of values and beliefs was not a simple matter of acceptance or rejection: missionaries and Christian laymen persisted in the face of open hostility and served as important liaisons between East and West.

Already deeply intimate with the country, Reischauer hoped to establish a more equal partnership with Japan, which had long been maligned in the American imagination. Reischauer pushed his fellow citizens to abandon caricature and stereotype and recognize Japan as a peace-loving democracy. Though his efforts were often condemned for being "too soft," the immensity of his influence (and the truth of his arguments) can be felt today. Having worked as Reischauer's special assistant in Tokyo, George R. Packard writes the definitive and first biography of this rare, charismatic talent. Reischauer reset the balance between two powerful nations. During World War II, he analyzed intelligence and trained American codebreakers in Japanese. He helped steer Japan toward democracy and then wrote its definitive English-language history. Reischauer's scholarship supplied the foundations for future East Asian disciplines, and his prescient research foretold America's missteps with China and involvement in Vietnam. At the time of his death in 1990, Reischauer warned the U.S. against adopting an attitude toward Asia that was too narrow and self-centered. India, Pakistan, and North Korea are now nuclear powers, and Reischauer's political brilliance has become more necessary and trenchant than ever.

Book excerpt: This volume is by the author ofThe Kakure Kirishitan of Japan: A study of their development, beliefs and rituals to the present day, widely seen as the landmark study on this subject. Stephen Turnbull here brings together in two volumes the most significant scholarly writings on Japan's hidden Christians published in recent times, encompassing a span of some 450 years of the Christian tradition in Japan. Remarkably, in many respects, the inheritors of this tradition continue to remain 'hidden' at the dawn of the new millennium. The author contributes a full introduction, in which he reviews the key elements of the collected writings and at the same time takes the opportunity to bring his own study up-to-date.

Book excerpt: In November 1877, three months after Emperor Meiji's conscript army of commoners defeated forces led by Japan's famous "last samurai," the Reverend Tom Alexander and his new wife, Emma, arrived in Japan, a country where Christianity had been punishable by death until 1868. A Christian in the Land of the Gods offers an intimate view of hardships and challenges faced by nineteenth-century missionaries working to plant their faith in a country just emerging from two and a half centuries of self-imposed seclusion. The narrative takes place against the backdrop of wrenching change in Japan and Great Power jockeying for territory and influence in Asia, as seen through the eyes of a Presbyterian missionary from East Tennessee. This true story of personal sacrifice, devotion to duty, and unwavering faith sheds new light on Protestant missionaries' work with Japan's leading democracy activists and the missionaries' role in helping transform Japan from a nation ruled by shoguns, hereditary lords, and samurai to a leading industrial powerhouse. It addresses universal themes of love, loss, and the enduring power of faith. The narrative also proves that one seemingly ordinary person can change lives more than he or she ever realizes.

Book excerpt: In 1902 the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) petitioned the Japanese government to stop rewarding good deeds with the bestowal of sake cups. Alcohol production and consumption, its members argued, harmed individuals, endangered public welfare, and wasted vital resources. This campaign was part of a wide-ranging reform program to eliminate prostitution, eradicate drinking, spread Christianity, and improve the lives of women. As Elizabeth Dorn Lublin shows, members did not passively accept and propagate government policy but felt a duty to shape it by defining social problems and influencing opinion. Certain their beliefs and reforms were essential to Japan's advancement, members couched their calls for change in the rhetorical language of national progress. Ultimately, the WCTU's activism belies received notions of women's public involvement and political engagement in Meiji Japan.

Book excerpt: Volume 31 in the HSRCA series explores the important -- and largely unknowledged -- contribution of women to the history of the Reformed Church in America. Much more than an expose of untold stories, this significant foray into women studies discusses the church's continuing struggle to define the role of women in ministry and begins, at last, to rewrite the whole story of this significant North American demonination.
