Book Synopsis References and Conference Proceedings Towards the Understanding of Fracture Mechanics by : Pir M. Toor
Download or read book References and Conference Proceedings Towards the Understanding of Fracture Mechanics written by Pir M. Toor and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 1985 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Castastrophic failure of Liberty Ships and T-2 tankers during Word War II and many ships' failures thereafter instigated extensive research into the problem of brittle fracture. Later, the failure of missiles and aircraft gave a new boost to fracture research in the late 50's and 60's. New concepts of fatigue analysis and fracture are being continuously established and refined.

Book Synopsis Improvement of the Structural Integrity of Ceramic Parts by : Bogdan Vasyliv
Download or read book Improvement of the Structural Integrity of Ceramic Parts written by Bogdan Vasyliv and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-05 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to previous epochs, we live in a “new ceramic world” where advanced ceramics are engineered for specific applications. This book highlights studies in the fields of fracture mechanics and materials science as promising avenues for the quality control of ceramic products. It proposes new approaches to solving issues regarding the structural integrity of ceramic parts, namely techniques of crack initiation and retardation in ceramic parts of arbitrary shapes explaining regularities of crack retardation kinetics. It also presents a developed technique of high-temperature reduction-oxidation (redox) treatment of Ni-containing cermets for solid oxide fuel cell anodes. The book should be useful to mechanical engineers and materials scientists developing new ceramic and superhard materials and designing corresponding products of complex shapes.
Book Synopsis IUTAM Symposium on Scaling Laws in Ice Mechanics and Ice Dynamics by : J.P. Dempsey
Download or read book IUTAM Symposium on Scaling Laws in Ice Mechanics and Ice Dynamics written by J.P. Dempsey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Volume constitutes the Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium on 'Scaling Laws in Ice Mechanics and Ice Dynamics', held in Fairbanks, Alaska from 13th to 16th of June 2000. Ice mechanics deals with essentially intact ice: in this discipline, descriptions of the motion and deformation of Arctic/ Antarctic and river/lake ice call for the development of physically based constitutive and fracture models over an enormous range in scale: 0.01 m - 10 km. Ice dynamics, on the other hand, deals with the movement of broken ice: descriptions of an aggregate of ice floes call for accurate modeling of momentum transfer through the sea/ice system, again over an enormous range in scale: 1 km (floe scale) - 500 km (basin scale). For ice mechanics, the emphasis on lab-scale (0.01 - 0.5 m) research con trasts with applications at the scale of order 1 km (ice-structure interaction, icebreaking); many important upscaling questions remain to be explored.

Book Synopsis The Theory of Critical Distances by : David Taylor
Download or read book The Theory of Critical Distances written by David Taylor and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-07-07 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical distance methods are extremely useful for predicting fracture and fatigue in engineering components. They also represent an important development in the theory of fracture mechanics. Despite being in use for over fifty years in some fields, there has never been a book about these methods – until now. So why now? Because the increasing use of computer-aided stress analysis (by FEA and other techniques) has made these methods extremely easy to use in practical situations. This is turn has prompted researchers to re-examine the underlying theory with renewed interest. The Theory of Critical Distances begins with a general introduction to the phenomena of mechanical failure in materials: a basic understanding of solid mechanics and materials engineering is assumed, though appropriate introductory references are provided where necessary. After a simple explanation of how to use critical distance methods, and a more detailed exposition of the methods including their history and classification, the book continues by showing examples of how critical distance approaches can be applied to predict fracture and fatigue in different classes of materials. Subsequent chapters include some more complex theoretical areas, such as multiaxial loading and contact problems, and a range of practical examples using case studies of real engineering components taken from the author's own consultancy work. The Theory of Critical Distances will be of interest to a range of readers, from academic researchers concerned with the theoretical basis of the subject, to industrial engineers who wish to incorporate the method into modern computer-aided design and analysis. - Comprehensive collection of published data, plus new data from the author's own laboratories - A simple 'how-to-do-it' exposition of the method, plus examples and case studies - Detailed theoretical treatment - Covers all classes of materials: metals, polymers, ceramics and composites - Includes fracture, fatigue, fretting, size effects and multiaxial loading
