Book excerpt: Welcome to the 2018 ACM/IEEE-CS Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL) in Fort Worth, Texas! It is our great pleasure to present the proceedings of the 18th JCDL. This year's conference theme -- From Data to Wisdom: Resilient Integration across Societies, Disciplines, and Systems -- reflects the progress of digital libraries into a mature research field. JCDL has always invited a broad range of reporting on research, development, and best practices, ranging across theories, systems, services, and applications in the field. This year's call focused on inviting contributions from many different disciplines (also newcomers and associated disciplines) and different stakeholders (researchers and practitioners), with the intent to showcase the diverse methods and research mix in the DL community. We believe that this goal has been achieved. This year's sessions cover topics about different object types (e.g., text, multimedia), different domains (science, archives), different digital library development stages (collection building, indexing and access, use), and different analysis approaches (citation analysis, topic modelling, linking). The call for papers attracted submissions from 29 countries on four continents. The program committee reviewed and accepted 26 full research papers (from 71 reviewed), 13 short research papers (from 38 reviewed), 4 tutorials, 5 workshops (from 7 reviewed), 45 posters and 3 demonstrations (from 68 reviewed). The doctoral consortium, which looks to assist and mentor young scholars in the investigation and research of digital libraries, received 20 submissions and accepted 11 for presentation at JCDL. This proceedings volume contains the full text of the papers, as well as abstracts of the keynotes, tutorials, workshops, panels, demonstrations, and posters. All paper submissions went through a rigorous reviewing process with three individual reviewers on each paper and a meta-review by a fourth expert from the DL community, which prepared the discussion for the program committee meeting in February 2018. With over 160 PC committee members from three continents, the program committee met virtually to discuss all submitted papers and the conference schedule. Posters and demos were accepted in two rounds of submissions: first, in an open, public call, as well as a second, invitation-only round for converting longer submissions into poster form. As in the past, we will be awarding three honors: the Vannevar Bush Best Paper Award, the Best Student Paper Award, and the Best Poster/Demo Award. During the opening session of the conference, the nominees for the two Best Paper Awards will be announced. The prizes will be presented at the banquet. We hope you will be inspired by the high quality and creativity of these award-winning papers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital libraries (DLs) have introduced new technologies, as well as leveraging, enhancing, and integrating related technologies, since the early 1990s. These efforts have been enriched through a formal approach, e.g., the 5S (Societies, Scenarios, Spaces, Structures, Streams) framework, which is discussed in two earlier volumes in this series. This volume should help advance work not only in DLs, but also in the WWW and other information systems. Drawing upon four (Kozievitch, Murthy, Park, Yang) completed and three (Elsherbiny, Farag, Srinivasan) in-process dissertations, as well as the efforts of collaborating researchers and scores of related publications, presentations, tutorials, and reports, this book should advance the DL field with regard to at least six key technologies. By integrating surveys of the state-of-the-art, new research, connections with formalization, case studies, and exercises/projects, this book can serve as a computing or information science textbook. It can support studies in cyber-security, document management, hypertext/hypermedia, IR, knowledge management, LIS, multimedia, and machine learning. Chapter 1, with a case study on fingerprint collections, focuses on complex (composite, compound) objects, connecting DL and related work on buckets, DCC, and OAI-ORE. Chapter 2, discussing annotations, as in hypertext/hypermedia, emphasizes parts of documents, including images as well as text, managing superimposed information. The SuperIDR system, and prototype efforts with Flickr, should motivate further development and standardization related to annotation, which would benefit all DL and WWW users. Chapter 3, on ontologies, explains how they help with browsing, query expansion, focused crawling, and classification. This chapter connects DLs with the Semantic Web, and uses CTRnet as an example. Chapter 4, on (hierarchical) classification, leverages LIS theory, as well as machine learning, and is important for DLs as well as the WWW. Chapter 5, on extraction from text, covers document segmentation, as well as how to construct a database from heterogeneous collections of references (from ETDs); i.e., converting strings to canonical forms. Chapter 6 surveys the security approaches used in information systems, and explains how those approaches can apply to digital libraries which are not fully open. Given this rich content, those interested in DLs will be able to find solutions to key problems, using the right technologies and methods. We hope this book will help show how formal approaches can enhance the development of suitable technologies and how they can be better integrated with DLs and other information systems.

Book excerpt: An up-to-date examination of the evolving field of digital curation and its important place in libraries, covering the major technical, social, and organizational issues surrounding curation for libraries, archives, and other information-based organizations. This book addresses the evolving field of digital curation and its important place in libraries, covering the myriad issues surrounding curation for libraries, archives, and other information-based organizations. Balancing research, theory, and practice in curation, this book is a valuable resource for students, librarians, and archivists that will help them understand the technology infrastructure that supports curation, develop effective curation plans, and make the best choices when digitizing collections that aid in the long term preservation and curation of their materials. The book can serve as a textbook for graduate courses in digital curation, digital libraries, and informatics as well as be useful to librarians and archivists for individual continuing professional education.
