Book excerpt: Alan Robinson This set of essays pays tribute to Bob Kowalski on his 60th birthday, an anniversary which gives his friends and colleagues an excuse to celebrate his career as an original thinker, a charismatic communicator, and a forceful intellectual leader. The logic programming community hereby and herein conveys its respect and thanks to him for his pivotal role in creating and fostering the conceptual paradigm which is its raison d’Œtre. The diversity of interests covered here reflects the variety of Bob’s concerns. Read on. It is an intellectual feast. Before you begin, permit me to send him a brief personal, but public, message: Bob, how right you were, and how wrong I was. I should explain. When Bob arrived in Edinburgh in 1967 resolution was as yet fairly new, having taken several years to become at all widely known. Research groups to investigate various aspects of resolution sprang up at several institutions, the one organized by Bernard Meltzer at Edinburgh University being among the first. For the half-dozen years that Bob was a leading member of Bernard’s group, I was a frequent visitor to it, and I saw a lot of him. We had many discussions about logic, computation, and language.

Book excerpt: The book contains the proceedings of the 12th European Testis Workshop and gives an excellent overview of the state of the art in testicular research. The chapters are written by leading scientists in the field of male reproduction, who were selceted on the basis of their specific area of research. The book covers all important aspects of testicular functioning, for example, Sertoli and Leydig cell functioning, spermatogonial development and transplantation, meiosis and spermiogenesis. Even for those investigators who were not present at the workshop, this volume provides a clear impression of the topics discussed during that meeting.

Book Synopsis Types in Logic Programming by : Frank Pfenning
Download or read book Types in Logic Programming written by Frank Pfenning and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of original research papers assesses and summarizes the impact of types on logic programming. Type theory is a well-established branch of theoretical computer science that has played an important role in the development of imperative and functional programming languages. This collection of original research papers assesses and summarizes the impact of types on logic programming. It covers all of the major themes in this burgeoning field, including simple types, regular tree types, polymorphic types, subtypes, and dependent types. Language design issues as well as semantics, pragmatics, and applications of types are discussed. The benefits that type considerations have to offer logic programming are being increasingly realized: through type checking many errors can be caught before a program is run, resulting in more reliable programs; types form an expressive basis for module systems, since they prescribe a machine-verifiable interface for the code encapsulated within a module; and types may be used to improve performance of code generated by a compiler. The research in this collection describes these benefits as well as important differences in the impact of types in functional and logic programming.
Book Synopsis Power Aware Computing by : Robert Graybill
Download or read book Power Aware Computing written by Robert Graybill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of portable and autonomous computing systems, power con sumption has emerged as a focal point in many research projects, commercial systems and DoD platforms. One current research initiative, which drew much attention to this area, is the Power Aware Computing and Communications (PAC/C) program sponsored by DARPA. Many of the chapters in this book include results from work that have been supported by the PACIC program. The performance of computer systems has been tremendously improving while the size and weight of such systems has been constantly shrinking. The capacities of batteries relative to their sizes and weights has been also improv ing but at a rate which is much slower than the rate of improvement in computer performance and the rate of shrinking in computer sizes. The relation between the power consumption of a computer system and it performance and size is a complex one which is very much dependent on the specific system and the technology used to build that system. We do not need a complex argument, however, to be convinced that energy and power, which is the rate of energy consumption, are becoming critical components in computer systems in gen eral, and portable and autonomous systems, in particular. Most of the early research on power consumption in computer systems ad dressed the issue of minimizing power in a given platform, which usually translates into minimizing energy consumption, and thus, longer battery life.

Book Synopsis Program Specialization by : Renaud Marlet
Download or read book Program Specialization written by Renaud Marlet and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-01-24 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the principles and techniques of program specialization — a general method to make programs faster (and possibly smaller) when some inputs can be known in advance. As an illustration, it describes the architecture of Tempo, an offline program specializer for C that can also specialize code at runtime, and provides figures for concrete applications in various domains. Technical details address issues related to program analysis precision, value reification, incomplete program specialization, strategies to exploit specialized program, incremental specialization, and data specialization. The book, that targets both researchers and software engineers, also opens scientific and industrial perspectives.

Book Synopsis Programming with Higher-Order Logic by : Dale Miller
Download or read book Programming with Higher-Order Logic written by Dale Miller and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-11 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formal systems that describe computations over syntactic structures occur frequently in computer science. Logic programming provides a natural framework for encoding and animating such systems. However, these systems often embody variable binding, a notion that must be treated carefully at a computational level. This book aims to show that a programming language based on a simply typed version of higher-order logic provides an elegant, declarative means for providing such a treatment. Three broad topics are covered in pursuit of this goal. First, a proof-theoretic framework that supports a general view of logic programming is identified. Second, an actual language called λProlog is developed by applying this view to higher-order logic. Finally, a methodology for programming with specifications is exposed by showing how several computations over formal objects such as logical formulas, functional programs, and λ-terms and π-calculus expressions can be encoded in λProlog.
