Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reducing the size of a coherently grown semiconductor cluster in all three directions of space to a value below the de Broglie wavelength of a charge carrier leads to complete quantization of the energy levels, density of states, etc. Such “quantum dots” are more similar to giant atoms in a dielectric cage than to classical solids or semiconductors showing a dispersion of energy as a function of wavevector. Their electronic and optical properties depend strongly on their size and shape, i.e. on their geometry. By designing the geometry by controlling the growth of QDs, absolutely novel possibilities for material design leading to novel devices are opened. This multiauthor book written by world-wide recognized leaders of their particular fields and edited by the recipient of the Max-Born Award and Medal 2006 Professor Dieter Bimberg reports on the state of the art of the growing of quantum dots, the theory of self-organised growth, the theory of electronic and excitonic states, optical properties and transport in a variety of materials. It covers the subject from the early work beginning of the 1990s up to 2006. The topics addressed in the book are the focus of research in all leading semiconductor and optoelectronic device laboratories of the world.

Book excerpt: The book summarizes the findings and contributions of the European ARTEMIS project, CESAR, for improving and enabling interoperability of methods, tools, and processes to meet the demands in embedded systems development across four domains - avionics, automotive, automation, and rail. The contributions give insight to an improved engineering and safety process life-cycle for the development of safety critical systems. They present new concept of engineering tools integration platform to improve the development of safety critical embedded systems and illustrate capacity of this framework for end-user instantiation to specific domain needs and processes. They also advance state-of-the-art in component-based development as well as component and system validation and verification, with tool support. And finally they describe industry relevant evaluated processes and methods especially designed for the embedded systems sector as well as easy adoptable common interoperability principles for software tool integration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High magnetic fields have been an important tool in semiconductor physics for a long time. The area has been growing very rapidly since quantum effects in silicon field-effect transistors have become of practical interest. Since the discovery of the quantum Hall effect by Klaus von Klitzing in 1980, this subject has grown exponentially. The book contains 42 invited papers and 37 contributed papers which were presented at the 7th of the traditional Würzburg conferences. For the area of high magnetic fields applied in semiconductor physics recent results are discussed, and the state-of-the-art is reviewed. More than 50% of the papers concern two-dimensional electronic systems. Other subjects of current interest are magneto-optics and magneto transport in three-dimensional semiconductors. Special attention has been paid to the rapidly growing field of semimagnetic semiconductors.

Advances in bulk semiconductors and defect and impurity related problems are reviewed. A key role is played by semiconductor structures with reduced dimensionality, as heterostructures, superlattices, quantum wires, and dots. Special emphasis is given to growth-related problems, and new semiconducting materials (inorganic as well as organic) and novel devices will be highlighted. The proceedings provide an exhaustive overview on the most recent achievements in semiconductor physics.

Book excerpt: The Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors are contained in this volume. A record 1050 scientists from 40 countries participated in the Conference which was held in San Francisco August 6·1 0, 1984. The Conference was organized by the ICPS Committee and sponsored by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics and other professional, government, and industrial organizations listed on the following pages. Papers representing progress in all aspects of semiconductor physics were presented. Far more abstracts (765) than could be presented in a five-day meeting were considered by the International Program Committee. A total of 350 papers, consisting of 5 plenary, 35 invited, and 310 contributed, were presented at the Conference in either oral or poster sessions. All but a few of the papers were submitted and have been included in these Proceedings. An interesting shift in subject matter, in comparison with earlier Conferences, is manifested by the large number of papers on surfaces, interfaces, and quantum wells. To facilitate the use of the Proceedings in finding closely related papers among the sometimes relatively large number of contributions within a main subject area, we chose not to arrange the papers strictly according to the Conference schedule. We have organized the book, as can be seen from the Contents, into specific subcategories and subdivisions within each major category. Plenary and invited papers have been placed together with the appropriate contributed papers.
