It is vital to the continued development of computer science and informatics, and is indispensable for the effective functioning of a multitude of systems in fields such as medicine, economics, linguistics, philosophy, psychology and logical analysis, as well as industry. This book presents the proceedings of the 13th Scandinavian Conference on Artificial Intelligence (SCAI 2015), held in Halmstad, Sweden, in November 2015. SCAI is the main biennial conference for the AI research communities of Scandinavia, but also attracts the attendance of a wide range of international participants. The book features 17 accepted papers from the conference as well as extended abstracts describing the work of six Ph.D. students who presented their research-in-progress to a panel of experts in the doctoral symposium which forms part of the conference. A wide range of topics are covered, including machine learning, data mining, logical reasoning, robotics and planning, and the papers included here focus on both the theory and practical applications of AI. The book will be of interest to all those wishing to keep abreast of the latest developments in the field of AI.

Recently, however, developments in Artificial Intelligence and Law have paved the way for overcoming this separation. Logic has widened its scope to defeasible argumentation, and informal accounts of analogy and dialectics have inspired the construction of computer programs. Thus the prospect is emerging of an integrated logical and dialectical account of legal argument, adding to the understanding of legal reasoning, and providing a formal basis for computer tools that assist and mediate legal debates while leaving room for human initiative.

This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The judiciary is in the early stages of a transformation in which AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology will help to make the judicial process faster, cheaper, and more predictable without compromising the integrity of judges' discretionary reasoning. Judicial decision-making is an area of daunting complexity, where highly sophisticated legal expertise merges with cognitive and emotional competence. How can AI contribute to a process that encompasses such a wide range of knowledge, judgment, and experience? Rather than aiming at the impossible dream (or nightmare) of building an automatic judge, AI research has had two more practical goals: producing tools to support judicial activities, including programs for intelligent document assembly, case retrieval, and support for discretionary decision-making; and developing new analytical tools for understanding and modeling the judicial process, such as case-based reasoning and formal models of dialectics, argumentation, and negotiation. Judges, squeezed between tightening budgets and increasing demands for justice, are desperately trying to maintain the quality of their decision-making process while coping with time and resource limitations. Flexible AI tools for decision support may promote uniformity and efficiency in judicial practice, while supporting rational judicial discretion. Similarly, AI may promote flexibility, efficiency and accuracy in other judicial tasks, such as drafting various judicial documents. The contributions in this volume exemplify some of the directions that the AI transformation of the judiciary will take.

Book excerpt: This volume of Advances in Intelligent and Soft Computing contains accepted papers presented at the 8th International Conference on Computational Intelligence in Security for Information Systems (CISIS 2015) and the 6th International Conference on European Transnational Education (ICEUTE 2015). These conferences were held in the beautiful and historic city of Burgos (Spain), in June 2015. The aim of the 8th CISIS conference is to offer a meeting opportunity for academic and industry-related researchers belonging to the various, vast communities of Computational Intelligence, Information Security, and Data Mining. The need for intelligent, flexible behaviour by large, complex systems, especially in mission-critical domains, is intended to be the catalyst and the aggregation stimulus for the overall event. After a through peer-review process, the CISIS 2015 International Program Committee selected 43 papers, written by authors from 16 different countries. In the case of 6th ICEUTE conference, the International Program Committee selected 12 papers (from 7 countries). These papers are published in present conference proceedings, achieving an acceptance rate of about 39%. The selection of papers was extremely rigorous in order to maintain the high quality of the conference and we would like to thank the members of the Program Committees for their hard work in the reviewing process. This is a crucial process to the creation of a high standard conference and the CISIS and ICEUTE conferences would not exist without their help.
