Book excerpt: These guidelines were developed as part of a comprehensive research program undertaken by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) to reduce costs associated with design and construction of bridge foundations while maintaining appropriate levels of safety for the traveling public. The research program was conducted by faculty, students, and staff from the University of Missouri and Missouri University of Science and Technology in collaboration with MoDOT personnel and private industry. The research program was completed in Fall 2010. These guidelines, along with several others, serve as the principal deliverables from the research program. The guidelines were established from a combination of existing MoDOT Engineering Policy Guide (EPG) documents, from the 4th Edition of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications with 2009 Interim Revisions, and from results of the research program. Some provisions of the guidelines represent substantial changes to current practice to reflect advancements made possible from results of the research program. Other provisions were left essentially unchanged, or were revised to reflect incremental changes in practice, because research was not performed to address those provisions. Some provisions reflect rational starting points based on judgment and past experience from which further improvements can be based. All of the provisions should be considered as "living documents" subject to further revision and refinement as additional knowledge and experience is gained with the respective provisions. A number of specific opportunities for improvement are provided in the commentary that accompanies the guidelines.

Book excerpt: Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) methods for slopes and MSE walls were developed based on probability theory. The complexity in developing LRFD for slopes and MSE walls results from the fact that (1) the representation of spatial variability of soil parameters of slopes using Gaussian random field is computationally demanding and (2) LRFD of MSE walls requires examination of multiple ultimate limit states for both external and internal stability checks. For each design case, a rational framework is developed accounting for different levels of target probability of failure (or target reliability index) based on the importance of the structure. The conventional equations for loads and resistance in the current MSE wall design guides are modified so that the equations more closely reproduce the ultimate limit states (ULSs) in the field with as little uncertainty as possible. The uncertainties of the parameters, the transformation and the models related to each ULS equation are assessed using data from an extensive literature review. The framework used to develop LRFD methods for slopes and MSE walls was found to be effective. For LRFD of slopes, several slopes were considered. Each was defined by the mean value of the strength parameters and unit weight of each soil layer and of the live load.

Special emphasis is placed on the utility and application of stablity formulas, charts, and computer programs developed recently by the author for the analy sis of human-created slopes. These analyses can be used for the design of new slopes and the assessment of remedial measures on existing slopes. To make the book more complete as a treatise on slope stability analysis, other methods of stability analysis, in addition to those developed by the author, are briefly discussed. It is hoped that this book will be a useful reference, class room text, and users' manual for people interested in learning about stability analysis.

Book excerpt: This report presents the fundamental limit equilibrium slope stability equations required to compute the stability of earth slopes containing synthetic reinforcement "geogrids". The limit equilibrium equations were incorporated into a computer program, UTEXAS2, which was then used to perform a number of calculations for verification. Results of the calculations were compared with other published solutions and with the results of other limit equilibrium slope stability computations based on several simplified approximations. An important consideration in the design of reinforced slopes is the magnitude of the force which can be developed in the reinforcement. A series of finite element calculations were performed to estimate potential elongation strain in reinforcement. The finite element computations simulated the expansion of soil in a compacted earth slope and were used to estimate probable strain in reinforcement.
