Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in Modern Education Addresses and Essays This volume is composed of some of the essays and addresses which, in spite of the many exact ing duties of a busy professional life, I have found time to prepare. All but four of the pa pers here brought together were delivered before Texas audiences, two of the exceptions being written for national educational societies, the third for the Association of Southern Colleges and Preparatory Schools, and the fourth for the Southern Educational Association. The essays and addresses were, in each in stance, born of a desire to meet the demands of a practical situation; and were, therefore, con cerned, not so much with the presentation of ab stract ideals, as with the application of well recognized educational principles to the solution of school problems that abound in our day. If there be a unifying principle in the several dis eussions, it is that of concrete idealism, which is the controlling, characteristic attribute of human evolution, and which insists upon the wisdom and necessity of reckoning with environment in order to obtain desirable results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher Essays and Addresses on Education The papers of this volume fall into three groups, two of the three being written by myself. From my writings on education I have selected only those which may have some claim to permanent interest, and all but two have been tested by previous pub lication. Those of the first group deal with ques tions about which we teachers, eager about our im measurable art beyond most professional persons, never cease to wonder and debate: What is teaching? How far may it influence character? Can it be prao ticed on persons too busy or too poor to come to our class - rooms? To subjects of what scope should it be applied? And how shall we content ourselves with its necessary limitations? Under these diverse head ings a kind of philosophy of education is outlined. The last two papers, having been given as lectures and stenographically reported, I have left in their original colloquial form. A group of papers on Har vard follows, preceded by an explanatory note, and the volume closes with a few papers by Mrs. Palmer.. She and I often talked of preparing together a book on education. Now, alone, I gather up these frag mentsn. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Ideal teaching focuses in suggestion. The more interest on the child's part, the nearer the nascent period for the topic, the more genius and ability, the lighter may the suggestion be and the less method is necessary to touch off the innate springs, the less repetition is necessary and the more sure and permanent the acquisi tion. Such teaching at the right psychological moment is, like a hint to the wise, sufficient. Biographies and religion abound with instances where a chance word or event, or per haps the unconscious influence of a single teacher or acquaint ance, has changed the whole current of life. This is the right. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in Education If these papers have but the smallest effect in indicating the great difficulty and range of the questions which an educational theorist must consider, I shall be more than satisfied. Mr. Michael Sadler, in an eloquent address which I had the good fortune to hear, defined Educational Theory as a meeting place of the Moral Sciences; and I have endeavoured somewhat to work on this conception. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Point of View of Modern Education This little book is the substance of lectures before Mothers' clubs delivered from month to month through a series of years. It is an effort to make application of some of the recent discoveries in science to the training of children. The now generally accepted theory of the growth of the human race through the ages, and of each individual born into the world in modern times, is that known as evolution. The old education was founded upon a radically different view of the world and of man. Educational practice, especially in later generations, has not been consistent with its theory, in many important respects, and progressive teachers have felt handicapped by a doctrine which was opposed to their methods. Every institution of the social world is now adjusting itself to the theory of evolution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamentals of Education The purpose of this volume is to interpret present day educational problems from the standpoint of pragmatic philosophy. The discussion is centered chiefly on two main topics; viz., the aims or ideals which should be dominant in education, and the nature of the mind or intelligence with which education has to deal. The book is written in the conviction that educational theory and practice have been vitiated by preconceptions which were historically inevitable but which are unjustifiable in the light of modern knowl edge. These preconceptions must be eliminated if education is to make its proper contribution towards the enrichment of life and towards making the world safe for democracy. The development during recent years of scientific method in the field of education has brought with it a comparative neglect of the more fundamental issues. For the time being this shift of emphasis towards scientific investigation was prob ably desirable. Its effect has been to place educational research on a permanent basis. But unless the study of detailed problems is properly correlated with theory, there is serious danger that education will simply be come more complicated, and perhaps more mechanical. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Sense in Teaching Modern Languages: An Address Read Before the Schoolmasters' Association of New York and Vicinity, Dec. 13, 1894 F I were to follow the plan Of the Old-time sermon-makers, I should naturally' speak on this subject under three heads 1) Common Sense, (2) Teaching, and (3) Modern Languages. Under the first head, however, nobody can tell another person anything, and under the second it is not likely that I can tell you a great deal. Still, before I begin to talk On the subject about which I hope I can tell you something, I wish to touch upon the other two, in order to make clear my starting point. A few years ago I got from a man who seems to have been more popular then than now, a sort Of formula which has been a very useful part Of my mental furniture ever since, and expresses as well as anything my conception of what common sense means. I refer to the famous sentence, It is a condition and not a theory which confronts us. In ninety-nine out Of a hundred of the problems Of actual life, it is a condition and not a theory which Confronts us. And the man who has common sense is the man who is very sparing Of theories till he is sure Of all the conditions, and then applies to the conditions, from all the theories he has on the subject, those which rest on the most general and most nearly axiomatic principles. Every act Of human effort has for its Object the accomplish ment of some result by the application Of certain means under certain conditions. A state of things as it exists before the act is to be changed into one more desirable. He is most successful who has the clearest understanding of what the existing state of things is, and Of the state Of things to be. Produced by the change, and who has at his command all the means which could be used to produce the desired result, and understands their rela tions, and has common sense to apply them in the right way and at the right time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Every Teacher's Problems Books dealing with the technic of teaching have almost invariably emphasized the importance of the inductive method. These same books have commonly proposed certain principles based upon psychology, and have sought to indicate the validity of these generalizations by more or less pertinent illustrations; but they have been almost wholly deductive in their method of dealing with the principles of teaching. The author of this book has em ployed the inductive method in his discussion of every teacher's problems. It has done much to break down prejudices, to bring home the necessity for prompt and comprehensive measures of reform, and to promote a Spirit of conciliation, concession, and co-operation. The benefits of organisation and united action have been made manifest, the value of trained intelligence has been proved, and as a nation we seem to be at last reaching the conviction that education is an asset of which far too little has yet been made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Aims and Civic Needs The common title, "Educational Aims and Civic Needs," given these addresses, represents their main purpose. The themes have been chosen in view of modern problems, and emphasis is placed on the relation between school and society. The appeal throughout is to the teacher, the student, the sociologist, and to the citizen interested in the means of progress. If the lesson is sometimes drawn from ancient history, it has a modern application; if from our inherited philosophy, it has a practical bearing. The New Humanism and the New Idealism are treated as vital factors in our civilization, and the "romance of the day's work" is applied to every sphere of labor. The relation of higher education to democracy is made prominent. While the several chapters are complete in themselves, they are placed in logical order, and each contributes to the general subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials in Education The purpose of this book is to present to teachers and all persons interested in education a discussion of some of the fundamental factors in public educa tion in the light of current educational practice. The point of view is distinctly practical. No panaceas are offered and no revolutions in current methods are proposed. While the form of statement may seem dogmatic in some instances, it is hoped that this is not the case to any greater extent than would be inevitable in presenting the convictions of the writer as an outgrowth of twenty-five years of public school work. Many of the chapters are upon subjects which have been presented many times by the writer in talks and addresses to teachers and the general public. This accounts for the informal nature of many statements. It is hoped that the point of view here presented will be helpful to teachers and others interested in education in applying to the solution of present problems the conclusions obtained from a long administrative experience. Grateful acknowledgment is made to Mr. Murray A. Dalman for help in preparing the references and for the illustration of the statistical methods used in Chapter 13. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School and the World In December, 1917, the present writers wrote a little book entitled "Political Education in a Public School," in which they put forward their views as to what the aims and methods of a modern liberal education should be. They also described certain experiments which they had been permitted to make in one of our old English Public Schools, experiments which both illustrated the authors' principles and tested their value. In July, 1918, that book was published. But in the intervening seven months several things had happened. On the one hand, "Political Education" had produced further striking evidence of its power over boys' intellects and characters, evidence altogether more striking than anything that had occurred up to the time of writing the book. On the other hand, the movement in the full tide of its success ran upon rocks and has been, for the time being at any rate, utterly and completely destroyed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of the Elementary School This study of the elementary school consists of two parts; the first is concerned with the broad general. problems dependent upon its organic structure, the second with specific phases of its work as planned and directed by the principal of a school or the teacher of a class. Although these two parts might imply each its own audience, I venture the hope that the general discussion in Part One may not only give the general student and the lay reader food for reflection, but that it may also meet responsive interest in the thought of earnest practical teachers. For the past few years our teachers have been the subject of rather microscopic study; their shortcomings have been duly analyzed and their responsibilities extensively chronicled. While they have been diligently tilling the educational soil, the educational geologists have looked on with voluminous criticism of their methods and manners, and latterly show a tendency to charge the teachers with responsibility for the very faults and fissures which inhere in the educational substratum.
