Es werden die Grundbegriffe, die Gründe für das gesteigerte Interesse an Wissensmanagement, Aufgaben und Ziele, Wissensmanagement-Ansätze und -Modelle näher behandelt (Kapitel 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). Die Zielsetzung dabei ist, ein Verständnis über und auch für das Thema Wissensmanagement zu schaffen. Die erfolgreiche Umsetzung der theoretischen Erkenntnisse in die Praxis stellt ein wesentliches Problem im Wissensmanagement dar. Deshalb sollen die für die Einführung und Umsetzung kritischen Erfolgsfaktoren in dieser Arbeit thematisiert werden. Die kritischen Erfolgsfaktorgruppen werden - in Anlehnung an eine vom Fraunhofer IPK durchgeführten Studie, bei der die Erfolgsfaktoren der Umsetzung von Wissensmanagement ermittelt und zu Gruppen zusammengefasst wurden - unter dem Begriff Gestaltungsdimensionen von Wissensmanagement diskutiert (Kapitel 7). Es geht hierbei um die Frage, welche Faktoren bei der Einführung und Umsetzung von Wissensmanagement beachtet werden müssen, damit Wissensmanagement zu einem Erfolg wird. Ein weiterer Problembereich im Wissensmanagement ist die Messung von Wissen und intellektuellem Kapital. Dieses Problem wird bei der Gestaltungsdimension Wissenscontrolling behandelt. Die Balanced Scorecard wird zunehmend als praxistaugliches Instrument zur strategischen und operativen Steuerung des Unternehmens gesehen. Es stellt sich die Frage, inwieweit die Balanced Scorecard die Steuerung des Unternehmens aus Wissensgesichtspunkten leisten kann. Das Konzept der Balanced Scorecard und deren Zusammenhang mit Wissensmanagement wird im Kapitel 8 beschrieben. Um dem Anwendungsbezug dieser Diplomarbeit gerecht zu werden, wird exemplarisch ein Software-Tool zur Verwirklichung der Balanced Scorecard analysiert (Kapitel 9). Technologien stellen eine wichtige, wenn oft auch überschätzte, Komponente im Wissensmanagement dar. Die Rolle der IuK-Technologien wird bei den Gestaltungsdimensionen behandelt.
