Book excerpt: In this thesis, I study the effect of the symmetry-preserving strain and the orthogonal antisymmetric strain to the critical temperature of the nematic phase transition (Ts) in a prototypical iron-based superconductor, BaFe2As2. The result establishes both strains as effective tuning parameters. This perspective is the utilized to systematically study the effect of these strain to Ts in the cobalt-doping series of BaFe2As2. A power-law behavior of the critical temperature was observed as a function of the combined tuning parameters, which is a linear combination the strains and the cobalt concentration. This provides the first clear evidence for power-law behavior of the critical temperature as a function of non-thermal tuning parameters. Lastly, I proposed an experiment that permits the measurement of the nematic susceptibility while continuously tuning the critical temperature with strain.

Book excerpt: Spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking phases, such as the electronic nematic phase and charge and spin stripe phases, are commonly found in the phase diagram of strongly correlated materials including many of the high-temperature superconductors. This thesis is essentially a study of how tuning parameters, namely applied uniaxial stress and applied magnetic field, can interact with the rotational symmetry-breaking order parameters of these phases, either to probe the system and better understand its intrinsic properties or to create new states in the system that are not spontaneously generated. This thesis discusses the development of a methodology which combines synchrotron x-ray techniques and transport measurements of a single crystal sample mounted to a uniaxial stress device. This methodology is used in iron-based high temperature superconducting materials to probe the nematic and magnetic phases. In Co-doped BaFe2As2, the coupling between electronic nematicity, the crystal lattice and the resistivity anisotropy is probed by strain, and a temperature and phase independent transport-structural correspondence is demonstrated. In EuFe2As2, the effects of nematicity on the Eu localized magnetic order is demonstrated from a strongly anisotropic antiferromagnetic coupling between Eu moments. While the work in this thesis is primarily focused on iron-based superconductors, these ideas are very general to the field of condensed matter physics, and this methodology of applied fields combined with x-ray measurements developed here is broadly applicable to systems with structural domains, large magnetoelastic coupling, and other strongly correlated electron effects.

Book excerpt: Electronic nematicity appears in proximity to unconventional high-temperature superconductivity in the cuprates and iron-arsenides, yet whether they cooperate or compete is widely discussed. While many parallels are drawn between high-Tc and heavy fermion superconductors, electronic nematicity was not believed to be an important aspect in their superconductivity. We have found evidence for a field-induced strong electronic in-plane symmetry breaking in the tetragonal heavy fermion superconductor CeRhIn5. At ambient pressure and zero field, it hosts an anti-ferromagnetic order (AFM) of nominally localized 4f electrons at TN=3.8K(1). Moderate pressure of 17kBar suppresses the AFM order and a dome of superconductivity appears around the quantum critical point. Similarly, a density-wave-like correlated phase appears centered around the field-induced AFM quantum critical point. In this phase, we have now observed electronic nematic behavior.

In the case of the superconducting iron pnictides, in addition to the antiferromagnetic ground state of the parent compounds, a ubiquitous but small structural distortion breaks the crystal C4 rotational symmetry in the underdoped part of the phase diagram. It has been proposed that this structural transition is driven by an electronic nematic phase transition, below which the electronic system spontaneously organizes with an orientational order without developing additional spatial periodic order. In this thesis I show how the effects of this electronic nematic order can be explicitly revealed by observing the response of the system to in-plane uniaxial stress. I present transport measurements of single crystal samples of various iron-based superconductors held under an in-situ tunable strain at temperatures above the phase transition, which explicitly confirm that the structural transition is fundamentally driven by a thermodynamic instability in the electronic part of the free energy. I will also discuss the nematic fluctuations prevailing throughout the overdoped part of the phase diagram, which suggests that a quantum phase transition occurs at the optimal doped composition. Finally, I will describe the in-plane resistivity anisotropy measurements of detwinned samples at temperatures below phase transition, which potentially reveals an intriguing interplay between topological protected Dirac pockets and spin/orbital ordering.

The quest to discover similar evidence in the cuprates calls for the application of extreme conditions. As such, quantum oscillation measurements were performed under high pressure in a high magnetic field, revealing a negative correlation between quasiparticle mass and superconducting critical temperature.

Book excerpt: This proposal is for theoretical work on strongly correlated electron systems, which are at the center of experimental and theoretical activities in condensed-matter physics. The interest to this field is driven fascinating variety of observed effects, universality of underlying theoretical ideas, and practical applications. I propose to do research on Iron-based superconductors (FeSCs), which currently attract high attention in the physics community. My goal is to understand superconductivity and magnetism in these materials at various dopings, the interplay between the two, and the physics in the phase in which magnetism and superconductivity co-exist. A related goal is to understand the origin of the observed pseudogap-like behavior in the normal state. My research explores the idea that superconductivity is of electronic origin and is caused by the exchange of spin-fluctuations, enhanced due to close proximity to antiferromagnetism. The multi-orbital/multi-band nature of FeSCs opens routes for qualitatively new superconducting states, particularly the ones which break time-reversal symmetry. By all accounts, the coupling in pnictdes is below the threshold for Mott physics and I intend to analyze these systems within the itinerant approach. My plan is to do research in two stages. I first plan to address several problems within weak-coupling approach. Among them: (i) what sets stripe magnetic order at small doping, (ii) is there a preemptive instability into a spin-nematic state, and how stripe order affects fermions; (iii) is there a co-existence between magnetism and superconductivity and what are the system properties in the co-existence state; (iv) how superconductivity emerges despite strong Coulomb repulsion and can the gap be s-wave but with nodes along electron FSs, (v) are there complex superconducting states, like s+id, which break time reversal symmetry. My second goal is to go beyond weak coupling and derive spin-mediated, dynamic interaction between fermions, understand what sets the upper scale for attractive interaction, compute T_c, and then obtain and solve matrix non-linear gap equation for spin-mediated pairing and study various feedbacks from the pairing on fermions on ARPES spectra, optical and thermal conductivity, and other observables, The problems I have chosen are quite generic, and the understanding of magnetically-mediated superconductivity in the strong-coupling regime will not only advance the theory of superconductivity in FeSCs, but will contribute to a generic understanding of the pairing of fermions near quantum-critical points -- the problems ranging from s-wave pairing by soft optical phonons to to color superconductivity of quarks mediated by a gluon exchange.
