Book excerpt: Electronics and Instrumentation, Second Edition, Volume 3: Probability and Information Theory with Applications to Radar provides information pertinent to the development on research carried out in electronics and applied physics. This book presents the established mathematical techniques that provide the code in which so much of the mathematical theory of electronics and radar is expressed. Organized into eight chapters, this edition begins with an overview of the geometry of probability distributions in which moments play a significant role. This text then examines the mathematical methods in electronics, which rest to an extraordinary degree upon the methods of time-and-frequency analysis. Other chapters consider the exponential dependence of the number of states on the number of units that immediately suggests a logarithmic measure of capacity. This book discusses as well the threshold of intelligibility that depends on the bandwidth of the transmitted signal. The final chapter deals with the simple applications of direct probabilities to radar theory. This book is a valuable resource for radar engineers.

Book excerpt: This book is an evolution from my book A First Course in Information Theory published in 2002 when network coding was still at its infancy. The last few years have witnessed the rapid development of network coding into a research ?eld of its own in information science. With its root in infor- tion theory, network coding has not only brought about a paradigm shift in network communications at large, but also had signi?cant in?uence on such speci?c research ?elds as coding theory, networking, switching, wireless c- munications, distributeddatastorage, cryptography, andoptimizationtheory. While new applications of network coding keep emerging, the fundamental - sults that lay the foundation of the subject are more or less mature. One of the main goals of this book therefore is to present these results in a unifying and coherent manner. While the previous book focused only on information theory for discrete random variables, the current book contains two new chapters on information theory for continuous random variables, namely the chapter on di?erential entropy and the chapter on continuous-valued channels. With these topics included, the book becomes more comprehensive and is more suitable to be used as a textbook for a course in an electrical engineering department.

Book excerpt: The Application of Mathematical Statistics to Chemical Analysis presents the methods of mathematical statistics as applied to problems connected with chemical analysis. This book is divided into nine chapters that particularly consider the principal theorems of mathematical statistics that are explained with examples taken from researchers associated with chemical analysis in laboratory work. This text deals first with the problems of mathematical statistics as a means to summarize information in chemical analysis. The next chapters examine the classification of errors, random variables and their characteristics, and the normal distribution in mathematical statistics. These topics are followed by surveys of the application of Poisson's and binomial distribution in radiochemical analysis; the estimation of chemical analytic results; and the principles and application of determination of experimental variance. The last chapters explore the determination of statistical parameters of linear relations and some working methods associated with the statistical design of an experiment. This book will be of great value to analytical chemists and mathematical statisticians.

This book was released on 1962-01-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compact volume equips the reader with all the facts and principles essential to a fundamental understanding of the theory of probability. It is an introduction, no more: throughout the book the authors discuss the theory of probability for situations having only a finite number of possibilities, and the mathematics employed is held to the elementary level. But within its purposely restricted range it is extremely thorough, well organized, and absolutely authoritative. It is the only English translation of the latest revised Russian edition; and it is the only current translation on the market that has been checked and approved by Gnedenko himself. After explaining in simple terms the meaning of the concept of probability and the means by which an event is declared to be in practice, impossible, the authors take up the processes involved in the calculation of probabilities. They survey the rules for addition and multiplication of probabilities, the concept of conditional probability, the formula for total probability, Bayes's formula, Bernoulli's scheme and theorem, the concepts of random variables, insufficiency of the mean value for the characterization of a random variable, methods of measuring the variance of a random variable, theorems on the standard deviation, the Chebyshev inequality, normal laws of distribution, distribution curves, properties of normal distribution curves, and related topics. The book is unique in that, while there are several high school and college textbooks available on this subject, there is no other popular treatment for the layman that contains quite the same material presented with the same degree of clarity and authenticity. Anyone who desires a fundamental grasp of this increasingly important subject cannot do better than to start with this book. New preface for Dover edition by B. V. Gnedenko.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1968, Harry Van Trees’s Detection, Estimation, and Modulation Theory, Part I is one of the great time-tested classics in the field of signal processing. Highly readable and practically organized, it is as imperative today for professionals, researchers, and students in optimum signal processing as it was over thirty years ago. The second edition is a thorough revision and expansion almost doubling the size of the first edition and accounting for the new developments thus making it again the most comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of the subject. With a wide range of applications such as radar, sonar, communications, seismology, biomedical engineering, and radar astronomy, among others, the important field of detection and estimation has rarely been given such expert treatment as it is here. Each chapter includes section summaries, realistic examples, and a large number of challenging problems that provide excellent study material. This volume which is Part I of a set of four volumes is the most important and widely used textbook and professional reference in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Airspace surveillance is one of the classic applications of radar technology. Existing systems are focused on large-scale surveillance of commercial airspace. This research presents a prototype of a small, mobile, passive radar system that for example can be used to monitor aircraft and UAVs in the airspace over maritime borders. The system is based on a coherent, software defined receiving system for data acquisition. The signal processing is subsequently performed in the digital domain. The paper gives an introduction to all the required fundamentals and all the relevant steps of signal processing are shown, starting from digital beamforming, through the generation of the range Doppler matrices, all the way to the tracking of targets using Kalman filters. Furthermore, a novel system for the detection of transmitter locations is presented, which allows the use of such a system in previously unknown scenarios. Finally, measurements are presented to show what such a system can achieve under real world conditions.
