Book excerpt: Since the publication of Vygotsky’s Thought and Language in the United States, a number of North American and European investigators have conducted systematic observations of children’s spontaneous private speech, giving substantial support to Vygotsky’s major hypotheses — particularly those regarding the social origins of higher psychological functions. However, there still remain many vital questions about the origins, significance, and functions of private speech: How can social and private speech be validly differentiated? What kinds of social interactions promote the use of private speech? What are the sources of individual differences in the use of private speech? This unique volume addresses these and many other important questions. Characterized by a strong emphasis on original data, it reports on systematic observations of spontaneous private speech in children and adults in both laboratory and naturalistic settings. In addition to its systematic analysis of common methodological problems in the field, the book contains the most comprehensive bibliography of the private speech literature currently available.

Book excerpt: · Criminology is the scientific study of preventing criminal behavior, knowing its nature, causes, consequences, and how to control it, whether on the individual or social level. Criminology is an interdisciplinary field in both the behavioral and social sciences, drawing particularly on research from sociologists, psychologists, philosophers, psychiatrists, biologists, social anthropologists, as well as jurists. Criminology has witnessed significant development over the past 100 years. There are three stages in the United States of America: The first stage (1900-1930): This is the golden age of research. The second stage (1930-1960): This is the golden age of theory and criminal research The third phase (1960-2000): is seen as an important turning point for criminology. The term criminology was coined by the Italian professor Rafaela Garofalo and then by the Frenchman Paul Topinard. · Social structure theories : This theory is applied to a variety of approaches within the foundations of criminology in particular, and in sociology more generally as a conflict theory or structural conflict perspective in sociology, and the sociology of crime. Since this perspective is in itself broad enough, it embraces a diversity of positions . · Through social research and criminal psychology research, the author, a criminal lawyer, attempts to present the most important problems and solutions to the most important topics in Self Regulation through Private Speech as one of the branches of criminal behavioral psychology. Book excerpt: This volume represents the first collection of empirical studies focusing on peer interaction for L2 learning. These studies aim to unveil the impact of mediating variables such as task type, mode of interaction, and social relationships on learners’ interactional behaviors and language development in this unique and pedagogically powerful learning context. To examine these issues, contributors employed quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods designs as well as cognitive, social, and sociocognitive theoretical frameworks. The majority of the studies are classroom based and were conducted in a rich array of settings covering five continents and encompassing a wide range of learner L1s and target languages. These settings include second and foreign language classrooms from primary to university level, content-based programs, online contexts, and after-school programs. To span the divide between research and practice, each study includes a section suggesting pedagogical implications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Processes of language acquisition and children's uses of language have long been topics of intense interest to laymen and professionals alike. In the early 1960s, developmental psycholinguistics took shape as a field of systematic inquiry with primary focus on the acquisition of language as a formal grammatical system. The field of child inquiry has broadened steadily in the past 25 years. Current investigations are concerned with relations of language to conceptual development and the functions of language as well as with the development of language as a formal system. This comprehensive anthology reflects the excitement of theoretical debate and makes clear the kinds of empirical questions that structure the field today. Students are introduced to the field of child language through primary source material drawn from the recent work of leading researchers and theoreticians. The thirty papers collected here cover a group of significant topics including precursors of language, the transition to language, first words, syntax and semantics in early language, social and private speech, child conversation, early narrative, metaphor, and metalinguistic processes. Several different kinds of methodologies for gathering and analyzing data on child language are exemplified by the studies in this collection. For each of the five sections of the book, a brief introduction highlights critical issues in the area and delineates interrelations among selections. Intended for use as a main or supplementary text in upper level courses, this comprehensive, carefully edited anthology can also serve as an introduction to the field for professionals interested in research and theory in child language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this concise, timely book, constitutional law expert Stephen M. Feldman draws on neoconservative writings to explore the rise of the neocons and their influence on the Supreme Court. Neocons burst onto the political scene in the early 1980s via their assault on pluralist democracy’s ethical relativism, where no pre-existing or higher principles limit the agendas of interest groups. Instead, they advocated for a resurrection of republican democracy, which declares that virtuous citizens and officials pursue the common good. Yet despite their original goals, neocons quickly became an interest group themselves, competing successfully within the pluralist democratic arena. When the political winds shifted in 2008, however, neocons found themselves shorn of power in Congress and the executive branch. But portentously, they still controlled the Supreme Court. Neoconservative Politics and the Supreme Court explains how and why the neoconservatives criticized but operated within pluralist democracy, and, most important, what the entrenchment of neocons on the Supreme Court means for present and future politics and law.

Book excerpt: The general public often views early childhood education as either simply “babysitting” or as preparation for later learning. Of course, both viewpoints are simplistic. Deep understanding of child development, best educational practices based on development, emergent curriculum, cultural competence and applications of family systems are necessary for high-quality early education. Highly effective early childhood education is rare in that it requires collaboration and transitions among a variety of systems for children from birth through eight years of age. The SAGE Encyclopedia of Contemporary Early Childhood Education presents in three comprehensive volumes advanced research, accurate practical applications of research, historical foundations and key facts from the field of contemporary early childhood education. Through approximately 425 entries, this work includes all areas of child development – physical, cognitive, language, social, emotional, aesthetic – as well as comprehensive review of best educational practices with young children, effective preparation for early childhood professionals and policy making practices, and addresses such questions as: · How is the field of early childhood education defined? · What are the roots of this field of study? · How is the history of early childhood education similar to yet different from the study of public education? · What are the major influences on understandings of best practices in early childhood education?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kent Greenawalt's From the Bottom Up constitutes a collection of articles and essays written over the last five decades of his career. They cover a wide range of topics, many of which address ties between political and moral philosophy and what the law does and should provide. A broad general theme is that in all these domains, what really is the wisest approach to difficult circumstances often depends on the particular issues involved and their context. Both judges and scholars too often rely on abstract general formulations to provide answers. A notable example in political philosophy was the suggestion of the great and careful scholar, John Rawls, that laws should be based exclusively on public reason. The essays explain that given uncertainty of what people perceive as the line between public reason and their religion convictions, the inability of public reason to resolve some difficulty questions, such as what we owe to higher animals, and the feeling of many that their religious understanding should count, urging exclusive reliance on public reason is not a viable approach. Other essays show similar problems with asserted bases for legal interpretations and the content of provisions such as the First Amendment.

Book excerpt: The aim of the book is to explain a range of options for implementing the reflective practice cycle in educational settings in various international contexts. It presents a series of empirical case studies illustrating many different ways of implementing the reflective practice cycle, and how they can be researched by practitioners and academics. Increasing attention is given by teachers and teacher educators to the construct and implementation of reflective practice as a form of bottom-up, autonomous professional development. The aim of the book is to explain a range of options for implementing the reflective practice cycle in educational settings in various international contexts. Written by international academics, these studies show how reflection can be interpreted in different cultural contexts. The book concludes with a discussion by Anne Burns of the implications of these case studies for action research. It is hoped that the book will enable practitioners, and their mentors, to consider how best to implement reflective procedures in the specific contexts in which they work. Chapters in the book include: • Lesson planning: The fundamental platform for reflecting for action • Reflecting on action: Lesson transcripts • Pair discussions for reflecting on action: Stimulated recall • Observation leading to reflection This book will be key reading for researchers in the fields of teacher education.

In a globalized and digitized era, we need to better understand the relationship between the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and international borders. This book focuses on the exercise and protection of cross-border and beyond-border expressive and religious liberties, and on the First Amendment's relationship to the world beyond US shores. It reveals a cosmopolitan First Amendment that protects cross-border conversation, facilitates the global spread of democratic principles, recognizes expressive and religious liberties regardless of location, is influential across the world, and encourages respectful engagement with the liberty regimes of other nations. The Cosmopolitan First Amendment is the product of historical, social, political, technological and legal developments. It examines the First Amendment's relationship to foreign travel, immigration, cross-border communication and association, religious activities that traverse international borders, conflicts among foreign and US speech and religious liberty models, and the conduct of international affairs and diplomacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious liberty is often called "the first freedom." For many years, few decisions made by the Supreme Court have been more significant for ordinary Americans than those concerning issues of church and state. By what criteria do the justices make these holdings? This analysis reaches beyond legal doctrines and focuses on four important aspects of change in the American religious landscape: increasing religious diversity; the rise of secularism; the fast growing political influence of gay and lesbian groups; and the pushback from conservative Christians caused by these trends. The author examines how these changes nation-wide have influenced the Supreme Court under Chief Justice John Roberts in dealing with church-state cases.
