Book Synopsis Early Type Specimens in the Plantin-Moretus Museum by : John A. Lane
Download or read book Early Type Specimens in the Plantin-Moretus Museum written by John A. Lane and published by . This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Plantin-Moretus Museum has one of the world's richest collections of type specimens, many surviving nowhere else. They include types by Garamont, Granjon, Van den Keere, Briot, Van Dyck, Kis, Fournier, Rosart, Gille, Didot and many other masters from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century. Since the Plantin-Moretus printing office acquired most of the specimens when new, moreover, the collection as a whole tells a story in a way that collections assembled piecemeal in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries cannot. Finally, the Museum's archives help to document the origins of many specimens. This first detailed catalogue of the Museum's specimens reports the styles and sizes of type shown, describes the structures and paper stocks, notes relations with other specimens in the collection and elsewhere, and provides references to literature on many of the individual types shown. Preliminary notes on the type founders and printers who issued the specimens include chronologies of the foundries and information on the origins of their materials, sometimes supplemented with information about the history of the firms and the genealogy of the founders. Nearly all of the nineteen specimens illustrated at their original size appear here for the first time, and extensive indexes make this book a powerful reference tool for type specimen enthusiast and printing historians.

Download or read book Typographic Specimens written by Philip B. Meggs and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1993-12-16 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specimens of 38 of the finest type families in the world are brought together in Typographic Specimens: The Great Typefaces, making it an invaluable reference tool for graphic designers, editors, art directors, production managers, desktop publishers, and students. Each type family is shown in display and text specimens with complete fonts including italic and bold variations; extended families such as Futura and Univers include additional type weights and widths. Each type family's section opens with a full-page experimental design, created by an outstanding graphic designer to demonstrate its potential. The specimens are accompanied by a concise discussion of each type family's origins, charactertistics, and usage. Typographic specimens provide an opportunity to study typefaces, to select and plan typography, and to increase one's knowledge of letterforms. Drawing and tracing specimens remain excellent ways to understand type and create logos and other typographic designs. Study of specimens aids in the selection of fonts to be purchased for the font library. Typographic specimens introduce unfamiliar typefaces in printed form and aid in the development of connoisseurship. Comparative analysis of similar faces in printed form becomes possible. Over one hundred prominent designers and design educators were sent a ballot listing all major typefaces and were asked to vote for the type families that best fulfilled their personal criteria for typographic excellence. The typefaces contained in this book represent the results of this poll, providing a compendium of excellent typefaces that have stood the test of time. Typographic Specimens: The Great Typefaces will provide information, inspiration, and a keener knowledge of typography. Book Synopsis A Survey of Australian Typefounders' Specimens by : Bryans Bryans
Download or read book A Survey of Australian Typefounders' Specimens written by Bryans Bryans and published by . This book was released on 2014-12-10 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows previously unrecognised specimens of typographic designs preserved by the State Archives of South Australia. Specimens first mentioned in the New South Wales press more than 150 years ago. The skills and workmanship exhibited by Australia's pioneer typefounders in these specimens present a vital source of information for future print historians, and offer insights into our printing past for the general reader. Background information and additional specimens from other collections is included to give context to the newly discovered items. Types for bookwork and job printing were also cast by the local typefounders, often mimicking the designs to English and American foundries. However, a unique feature of Australian-made fonts was type suitable for recording the brands required by the governments of the colonies of New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia by which horses, cattle and sheep could be identified. These original and often curious designs are notable for their raw utility. The book contains besides biographical details of the founders, reproductions of John Davies' pica erased, Clarendon and Pica No. 1 fonts cast for William Hanson, New South Wales Government Printer. After the publicity surrounding this event in 1857 Davies went on to cast brands fonts, ligatures, logotypes and symbols for identifying cattle, horses and sheep, for the New South Wales, Queensland and South Australian colonial governments. In Victoria Henry James Thitchener started the "Victoria Type Foundry" and in dealing with John Ferres, Victorian Government Printer, sent him samples of his type, samples that I rediscovered in the Victorian Public Records Office and which in part are shown here. Thitchener eventually moved to Sydney where he issued a specimen book for the Australian Type Founding Company, samples of which are illustrated. H. J. Thitchener's son, Henry Arthur, joined F. T. Wimble and Co, in 1900, when the firm was bought by Wimble. After the age of what the purists call foundry type, came the commercial monotype foundries. Two of these are represented, "Trade Composition Pty Ltd" and "Monotrade" each of which is represented by pages from their specimen books.

Download or read book Emigre Fonts written by Rudy VanderLans and published by Gingko Press Editions. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1985, Berkeley-based graphic design company Emigre, the publisher of the legendary design magazine of the same name, launched one of the first independent digital type foundries to explore the new design possibilities offered by the MacIntosh computer. To announce each of their new typeface releases, Emigre published small booklets displaying the virtues of the fonts and revealing the processes used to design them. By creating specific contexts, many of these so called "type specimens" went beyond being simple sales tools. In fact the Emigre booklets were meant to be enjoyed as much for the typefaces as for their esoteric content.

Book Synopsis Handbuch Der Typografie by : Giambattista Bodoni
Download or read book Handbuch Der Typografie written by Giambattista Bodoni and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of the ubiquitous typeface Celebrated printer and type designer Giambattista Bodoni set the standard for printing the alphabet with his Manuale Tipografico (1818). The two-volume set--published posthumously in a limited edition of 250--features 142 sets of roman and italic typefaces, a wide selection of borders, ornaments, symbols, and flowers, as well as Greek, Hebrew, Russian, Arabic, Phoenician, Armenian, Coptic, and Tibetan alphabets. Official printer for the Duke of Parma, Bodoni (1740-1813) declared that well-designed type derived its beauty from four principles: uniformity of design, sharpness and neatness, good taste, and charm. His typefaces display an unprecedented degree of technical refinement, and epitomize purity and grace. The culmination of more than four decades of work, the Manuale Tipografico represents one of history's greatest typographical achievements. The Bodoni typeface is still widely used even today, both in digital media and in print, and TASCHEN's meticulous reprint of Bodoni's masterwork gives readers a rare opportunity to explore the origins of the Bodoni typeface and learn about its creator.
