Book excerpt: Noriaki Osada, teacher and philosopher, first published his revolutionary book Theory of International Physical Education and Sports Studies for the Achievement of Peace. With the offering before you, Principles of Physical Education and Sports Studies, and Research in All Nations, Mr. Osada continues his quest, elaborating on the theory of enlisting sports in the service of mankind as a means of promoting world peace. Today the Olympic Games represent a similar endeavor, but Mr. Osada's works not only create a broader vision, but provide practical methods for making that dream a reality. The specific sports covered here are martial arts, skating, gymnastics, skiing, and dance, but the principles can be applied to all sports. An absolute must for physical education experts, this is an exciting and powerful work. About the Author: Noriaki Osada was born in Kyoto, Japan, on March 19, 1949. He has a bachelor's degree from Osaka Physical Education College and an M.A. from National Osaka Education College. He also studied philosophy at Kyoto University as an auditing student. Mr. Osada continues his work in international physical education and sports studies as the founder of Olympic Education for people around the world, is a lifetime member of ICHPERSD (International Council for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports, & Dance), and is also a member of AAHPERD (American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance).

Book excerpt: Noriaki Osada, teacher and philosopher, wrote the Theory of International Physical Education and Sports Studies for the Achievement of Peace with "three bold intentions" in mind: to awaken the physical education and sports scholars of the world to their social, nationalistic and global responsibilities; to promote the study of physical education and sports as a study of peace independent from other academic fields; and to affirm the value of such study. As demonstrated in the special atmosphere of the ancient and ever popular Olympic Games, Osada believes that it is the "physical education and sports scholars of the world [who] will, through physical education and sports research, create national theories that will lead to peaceful societies and peaceful nations." Mr. Osada looks forward to the day when such sports terms as fair play and team spirit become the language of international relations. Now a resident of New York City, the author believes that with the establishment of physical education and sports studies for the achievement of peace, we in the United States will leave our mark in human history. This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

This book was released on 2012-07-18 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report on sport and exercise science and medicine says that more must be done to make use of exercise based treatments. There is compelling evidence that physical activity can be used as part of treatment for a wide range of chronic diseases. Yet there is a lack of awareness and appropriate training for health professionals of the benefits of exercise based treatments. A recent survey of 48 London GP practices found that none were aware of the latest Physical Activity Guidelines. The NHS should consider adding physical activity to the Quality and Outcomes Framework, which rewards GPs for how well they care for patients. NICE and the NHS should update chronic disease guidelines with detailed information about exercise, and evaluate the best way to deliver exercise treatments through the NHS. There is disappointment that the Sports Minister was interested only in increasing participation in sport, not using sport to improve the nation's health. The Committee believe that the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine, set up as part of Olympic legacy, may not be sustainable. The funding from government is a one-off £30m capital investment with no satisfactory strategy beyond that. On sports science, the Committee argue that approaches taken to improve the performance of elite athletes are not consistently based on strong biomedical science, nor do they seem to be systematically informed by the latest developments in science. Findings from high quality sports science could provide the basis for translational research to produce benefits for the wider public
