And what are our ethical commitments to our family members and to the broader moral community? After a brief introductory chapter on basic ethical concepts and theories, the essays in this volume provide readers with ethical analyses of issues ranging from same-sex marriage to a controversial proposal to “license” parents. The chapters cover love, sex, marriage, parents and children, the relationship between the family and the larger moral community, and the influence of emerging technologies on the ethical issues inherent in family life. The volume is intended to open up this exciting territory in applied ethics to those interested in philosophy, family studies, social work, and to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of the ethical forces at work in this most basic social institution.

A young couple with two children asks a Christian counselor to help them negotiate an end to their marriage. What responsibility does the counselor have to try to repair the relationship? A youth group member confidentially reveals to the pastor that he is taking drugs. Should the pastor tell the boy's parents? A counselor who teaches a college course has a client show up for class. What should she do? These are just a few of the complex dilemmas that therapists, counselors and pastors face nearly every day. Handling these situations appropriately is critical for both the client's progress and the professional's personal credibility and protection from liability. State and federal codes, professional association statements and denominational guidelines have been drawn up to address ethical issues like competence, confidentiality, multiple relationships, public statements, third parties and documentation. In this book you'll find them all compiled and interpreted in light of Christian faith and practice. Written by qualified professional counselors and respected academic instructors, this book is an indispensable resource for understanding and applying ethics in Christian counseling today.

Book excerpt: Now in its second edition, this text introduces readers to the rich history and practice of Marriage and Family Therapy, with 32 professionals from across the US presenting their knowledge in their areas of expertise. This blend of approaches and styles gives this text a unique voice and makes it a comprehensive resource for graduate students taking their first course in Marriage and Family Therapy. The book is divided into three sections: Part 1 focuses on the components on which 21st century family therapy is based and summarizes the most recent changes made to not only therapeutic interventions, but to the very concept of “family.” Part 2 presents an overview of the 7 major theoretical models of the field: structural, strategic, Milan, social constructionist, experiential, transgenerational, and cognitive-behavioral family therapy. Each chapter in this section • Focuses on the founder of the theory, its theoretical tenants, and its key techniques • Shows how the model focuses on diversity • Presents the research that supports the approach Part 3 addresses specific treatment areas that are common to marriage and family therapists, such as sex therapy, pre-marital therapy, research, and ethics and legal issues. As an introduction to the field of Marriage and Family Therapy, this volume stands above the rest. Not only will readers gain an understanding of the rich history of the field and its techniques, but they will also see a complete picture of the context in which families are embedded, such as gender, culture, spirituality, and sexual orientation. This knowledge is the key to understanding what differentiates Marriage and Family Therapy from individual psychotherapy. Glossaries, case studies, tables, figures, and appendices appear generously throughout the text to present this information and give students a thorough overview to prepare them for their professional lives.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ... chapter Vin the sanctity of marriage the natural sacredness of marriage demands further consideration of our subject in a manner wholly affirmative, as if divorces were unknown or only vaguely possible. To that demand this concluding chapter is intended to be in some measure a response. Marriage itself, which is constituted by the harmonious union of one man and one woman through reciprocal love abiding in its nature, is a natural human relationship. It is as natural as motherhood and fatherhood, to which it is Nature's condition precedent. On the physical or animal plane of human life, this is too obvious to require elucidation. The intimate physical union without which procreation is impossible, furnishes its own demonstration of its own indispensability to fatherhood and motherhood. Describe that relationship as only the expression of a momentary animal impulse if you will, yet the fact remains that even then Nature is seen to declare for monogamy, for unity, for reciprocality, for affection, and in many ways to suggest the idea of abidingness. But man does not live upon the physical or animal plane alone. Though we brush aside all thought of human immortality as an idle speculation, we cannot escape the obtrusive natural fact, a fact in the domain of human nature, that man possesses moral as well as physical qualities. You may say, if you will, that moral qualities are nothing but modes of the physical; as for instance, that the impulses of human marriages are only poetizations of animal matings, and that the impulses of human motherhood are the same affections in kind as those of the dam for her cub. Nevertheless, as none can deny that human action is often determined by disinterested love of another than one's self or one's own, ..
