Book excerpt: This exciting volume offers a unique approach to respiratory physiology examining the subject based upon fundamental biological, chemical, and physical principles. At each step, the book asks "Does it make sense?". This allows readers to understand not only how gas exchange works, but why scientifically and logically, gas exchange must work as it does. This approach leads to important practical benefits, including a rational understanding of the bases of both physiological acclimation and respiratory therapeutics; insight into what to expect when organisms respond to environmental on pathological challenges; and improved ability to synthesize and explore relationships between what may otherwise seem to be unrelated functions. The insight into respiratory physiology provided by this important text applies to a broad range of disciplines. Health professionals will find their ability to care for patients enhanced by their improved understanding of the functioning of gas exchange in the respiratory system. In addition, the book's thorough coverage provides direction for zoologists and physiologists interested in the development and function of animal respiratory systems.

Excerpt: ... between the veins of the system and the respiratory vessels, was seen in the Crustacea, where the venous sinuses, situated at the commencement of the branchial arches, may be regarded as so many repetitions of a simple form of a respiratory heart. In the class of Fishes, it will be seen that the heart is entirely respiratory, the arterial trunk which proceeds from it being distributed at once to the gills, and the blood which has been aerated in them being returned into a systemic artery or aorta, whence it proceeds to the body at large. In the higher Cephalopoda we observe a curious form of the circulating apparatus, which manifestly establishes the transition between that of the Mollusca in general, and that which is peculiar to Fishes. The systemic heart consists of only one cavity or ventricle, which is usually of a globular form, tolerably strong and muscular, and exhibiting bundles of fibres (carnece columtue) interlacing with one another (Fig. 118), as well as distinct valves protecting the mouths of the vessels which open into it. The aorta which proceeds from it, distributes arterial blood to the general system; and this is returned by means of the venous trunks, not immediately to the gills, as in the other Mollusca, but to two superadded impelling cavities, one of which is situated in connection with each row of gills. These branchial ventricles are less powerful than that which propels the blood through the system; but they are still sufficiently muscular and contractile to accelerate the circulation through the respiratory organs, and thus to prepare the blood for the maintenance of the increased muscular exertions which are required for the superior locomotive powers of these animals, as well as for the general activity of...

Book excerpt: This volume examines the extent to which the design and function of terrestrial and aquatic animals are determined by the physicochemical properties of the media in which they live. The topic is addressed from the viewpoint of scientists representing a variety of disciplines and approaches. Anatomists, biochemists, biophysicists, physiologists and zoologists each contribute their perspectives. The general topics examined include: respiration; acid base balance; osmoregulation; water and ionic exchanges; nutrient acquisition and absorption; nitrogen and sulfur metabolism; locomotion; sensory information and behaviour; energy metabolism; and temperature and evolution. Four or five papers deal with each of these general topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicine is grounded in the natural sciences, among which biology stands out with regard to the understanding of human physiology and conditions that cause dysfunction. Ironically though, evolutionary biology is a relatively disregarded field. One reason for this omission is that evolution is deemed a slow process. Indeed, macroanatomical features of our species have changed very little in the last 300,000 years. A more detailed look, however, reveals that novel ecological contingencies, partly in relation to cultural evolution, have brought about subtle changes pertaining to metabolism and immunology, including adaptations to dietary innovations, as well as adaptations to the exposure to novel pathogens. Rapid pathogen evolution and evolution of cancer cells cause major problems for the immune system to find adequate responses. In addition, many adaptations to past ecologies have turned into risk factors for somatic disease and psychological disorder in our modern worlds (i.e. mismatch), among which epidemics of autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and obesity, as well as several forms of cancer stand out. In addition, depression, anxiety and other psychiatric conditions add to the list. The Oxford Handbook of Evolutionary Medicine is a compilation of cutting edge insights into the evolutionary history of ourselves as a species, and how and why our evolved design may convey vulnerability to disease. Written in a classic textbook style emphasising physiology and pathophysiology of all major organ systems, the Oxford Handbook of Evolutionary Medicine will be valuable for students as well as scholars in the fields of medicine, biology, anthropology and psychology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do vertebrates get the oxygen they need, or even manage without it for shorter or longer periods of time? How do they sense oxygen, how do they take it up from water or air, and how do they transport it to their tissues? Respiratory system adaptations allow numerous vertebrates to thrive in extreme environments where oxygen availability is limited or where there is no oxygen at all. Written for students and researchers in comparative physiology, this authoritative summary of vertebrate respiratory physiology begins by exploring the fundamentals of oxygen sensing, uptake and transport in a textbook style. Subsequently, the reader is shown important examples of extreme respiratory performance, like diving and high altitude survival in mammals and birds, air breathing in fish, and those few vertebrates that can survive without any oxygen at all for several months, showing how evolution has solved the problem of life without oxygen.

Book excerpt: Present-day respiratory physiology stems largely from the explosion of ideas which took place during and after World War II. A number of the major players are still active, but the opportunity to prepare a personal history of this branch of medicine will soon be lost. In a sense then, this book offers an exceptional, even unique, opportunity. We are offered a first-hand chronicle of the advancements made in respiratory physiology in the course of this century by one of the principal figures in the field. The volume covers every aspect of the evolution of this important area of knowledge: morphology, gas exchange and blood flow, mechanics, control of ventillation, and comparative physiology. Some of the chapters are personal accounts of the development of respiratory physiology as observed by the author. It is hoped that what is lost in objectivity by this approach is more than made up by the captivating insights provided by the author into the process of scientific research and discovery.
