Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since it was first published in 1930, William Empson’s Seven Types of Ambiguity has been perceived as a milestone in literary criticism—far from being an impediment to communication, ambiguity now seemed an index of poetic richness and expressive power. Little, however, has been written on the broader trajectory of Western thought about ambiguity before Empson; as a result, the nature of his innovation has been poorly understood. A History of Ambiguity remedies this omission. Starting with classical grammar and rhetoric, and moving on to moral theology, law, biblical exegesis, German philosophy, and literary criticism, Anthony Ossa-Richardson explores the many ways in which readers and theorists posited, denied, conceptualised, and argued over the existence of multiple meanings in texts between antiquity and the twentieth century. This process took on a variety of interconnected forms, from the Renaissance delight in the ‘elegance’ of ambiguities in Horace, through the extraordinary Catholic claim that Scripture could contain multiple literal—and not just allegorical—senses, to the theory of dramatic irony developed in the nineteenth century, a theory intertwined with discoveries of the double meanings in Greek tragedy. Such narratives are not merely of antiquarian interest: rather, they provide an insight into the foundations of modern criticism, revealing deep resonances between acts of interpretation in disparate eras and contexts. A History of Ambiguity lays bare the long tradition of efforts to liberate language, and even a poet’s intention, from the strictures of a single meaning.

Book excerpt: "This is not an ordinary 'Introduction' but a manual for exegetical work written for the serious student of the New Testament. Rather than suggesting some easily accessible generalities, the book challenges the readers to apply themselves to the texts, and it will guide such efforts step by step as it leads the readers through the methodological rigors of scholarship. In scholarly method it represents the very best that has been developed primarily in the work of German biblical interpretation over the last hundred years. But it is not theory of exegesis that is taught; it is applied exegesis, exegetical praxis. Those who will follow the advice which this book gives will be richly rewarded as they become more conversant with the living voice of the gospel that is enshrined in the words, phrases, and sentences of Scripture." -Helmut Koester, Harvard University, The Divinity School "This unique and comprehensive handbook will be a boon to any serious student of the New Testament. The authors are expert guides to the current state of research as well as to the tasks and methods of exegesis." -Victor Paul Furnish, Southern Methodist University

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These eighteen pieces have been commissioned to provide a succinct yet comprehensive guide to the best of recent evangelical thinking about how the New Testament is to be interpreted, so that it may speak most clearly to today's world. The need for such a handbook can be felt more keenly as on the one side a secularized world dismisses the biblical faith as outmoded, unworkable, and unsatisfying; and, on the other, numerous Christian communities, committed to taking that faith with ultimate seriousness, are driven by controversies about how to read and understand the Bible. Following the editor's introduction, in which I. Howard Marshall examines a familiar New Testament passage in order to exemplify the problems and rewards that await the careful interpreter, the essays are arranged under four headings, beginning with overviews of the history of New Testament study and the role of the interpreter's presuppositions in this enterprise; then going on to discuss the various critical tools, the methods of exegesis, and the application of the New Testament to the faith and life of the contemporary reader. An annotated bibliography concludes the presentation. Because the issues involved here have too often been ignored in many quarters, more than one approach to or opinion about a given matter may surface in these essays; yet, undergirding this diversity is the author's shared conviction, as conservative evangelicals with a high regard for the authority of Holy Scripture, that we are called upon to study the Bible with the full use of our minds. As the editor writes, The passages which we interpret must be the means through which God speaks to men and women today. Our belief in the inspiration of the Bible is thus a testimony that New Testament exegesis is not just a problem; it is a real possibility. God can and does speak to men through even the most ignorant of expositors of his Word. At the same time he calls us on to devote ourselves to his Word and use every resource to make its message the more clear.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Biblical Interpretation, Vol. 1: Translated From the in Library Among ourselves, sound general learning and native talent have enabled many men to become good expositors of Scripture: but Bib lical Interpretation has not, among us, been formed into a science; nor have any very me morable attempts been made to reduce its prin ciples into a system. In Germany, on the contrary, Hermeneutics, as distinguished from Exegesz's that is to say, the Principles of In terpretation, as distinguished from Actual In terpretation, have long occupied the attention of scholars. Among these, Morus, Keil, Beck, Seiler, and J ahn, are eminent; but, by the con current testimony, both of Protestant and Ro mish critics, the Institutio of Ernesti still re tains the same rank in Hermeneutics that the Elements of Euclid do in Geometry.
