Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The high school principal plays an important and highly visible role in the community. High school principals are expected to provide challenging curriculum, comprehensive athletic and fine arts programs, a disciplined leanring environment, increased test scores, and community involvement. With such an array of demanding expectations, the selection of the high shcool principal is an extremely important decision made by Georgia school superintendents. In an effort to gain a better understanding of the employment criteria used to hire Georgia high school principals, the researcher used a previously validated formal survey constructed by Dr. Linda Gresham in 2003. The survey was mailed to all 180 Georgia public school superintendents. Descriptive statistics common to quantitative research were calculated, including frequencies, means, and standard deviations. The researcher's findings confirmed that there is an abundance of certified high school principal applicants in Georgia. However, superintendents reported that the actual number of qualified applicants is much lower. Georgia superintendents value credibility, having high expectations, and the ability to see the whole picture when considering the most important educational selection criteria for high school principal candidates. Criteria such as years of experience, being skilled in technology, and being knowledgeable about innovative practices were least valued by Georgia superintendents. The researcher recommends that Georgia school supereintendents be more proactive in recruiting high school principals by "growing their own" through more formalized professional learning programs.

Book excerpt: In addition to licensure and certification, there are particular qualities and personal characteristics superintendents look for when hiring a principal. With fewer principal applicants and increased projected needs for principals, it was important to explore the superintendents' reasoning when hiring a principal. A qualitative research method employing elite interviews was used to explore the criteria that superintendents employ in their process of selecting a principal. When talking about the hiring of principals, superintendents invariably began with the selection process. Teachers, community members, parents, former employers, and college professors gave input in formal or informal ways. Superintendents looked for experience both as a school administrator and as a teacher at the level of the school where the vacancy existed. Communication skills, decision-making, a sense of justice and fair play, a focus on community, and instructional leadership were qualities they considered important. Direct reference was not made to the Interstate School Leaders Licensing Consortium (ISLLC) Standards during interviews, however 48 of 182 indicators were touched upon during superintendent interviews. Themes of communication, communities, and ethics emerged. Superintendents expressed concern because candidate pools had lessened and projected needs increased. They spoke of the factors that deter teachers from seeking principalships as being geographic location, principal responsibilities, accountability, and compensation. There was not a one-size-principal-fits-all-schools attitude on the part of the superintendents. They looked for someone with administrative experience, an instructional focus, communication skills, and finely tuned decision-making skills. Principals needed to be able to relate to a diverse group of people, and have a sense of justice and fair play in dealings with all people. ISLLC Standards did not appear to have a profound influence on superintendents as they searched for individuals to serve as school leaders. This study adds to development of a comprehensive knowledge base of information regarding qualities of individuals selected for principalships. It provides another framework for professional educators to enhance understanding of school leadership expectations. It may aid superintendents in decisions made regarding recruitment and selection of principals. It may aid researchers when evaluating use of ISLLC Standards in the selection of principals.

Book excerpt: This study examined elementary school principals and the behaviors, skills and experiences that inform second order change responsibilities. These findings were then compared to the district principal selection processes of two case study districts in Southern California. Through individual interviews of 11 elementary principals, the investigator determined the value placed on specific responsibilities that are associated with effective school leadership and the essential factors that allow them to successfully negotiate these activities. Principal selection materials, including interview questions and job descriptions, were then analyzed to determine the extent to which the aforementioned key factors are aligned to the principal selection process. Finally, recommendations were made for the participating Districts to support a more intentional and effective principal selection processes. The study revealed the following findings. First, prevalent themes emerged from the data in the form of leadership dispositions. Principals employed a variety of leadership dispositions in often synergistic ways to execute key responsibilities associated with second order change. Second, there were common behaviors, skills and traits and that were shared by a large percentage of principals and were used or needed across multiple responsibilities. In terms of the principal selection processes, participating Districts focused largely on first-order change responsibilities and demonstrated limited intention on matching school need to specific principal behaviors and practices. When focusing on second order change responsibilities, very few criteria were associated with the key responsibilities used at the school site, consequently using fit as a key determining factor in selecting principals.
