Book excerpt: Energy efficiency also reduces the burden on existing energy infrastructure and the need for costly upgrades; reduces the energy burden of vulnerable populations; and reduces greenhouse gas and other emissions. [...] Energy efficiency and conservation The cheapest energy is the energy we don't use. [...] These could include incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles, installation of public charging infrastructure, expansion of cycling lanes and active transportation corridors across the province and the implementation of strategies to make traffic more efficient and reduce energy use. [...] In light of the guidance from the principles outlined above, the goals we are seeking to meet through the implementation of this Strategy are: 4 1. RELIABILITY Our energy systems must provide reliable service that meets our needs now and into the future. [...] We don't know the future, but we know there is a commitment to take action on climate change, and we need the Island to be in position to take advantage of funding and opportunities that will become known in the near-term.

The rationale behind this book is to present where the Canadian EE sector stands today to all Canadian stakeholders and those interested around the world. The Canada Energy Efficiency Outlook aims to outline the different environments that support EE development in our highly diversified provinces and territories, as well as at the national level, and consequently allow the reader to better understand the complexities involved. More globally, this book serves as an important reference for all interested parties on how Canada has variably innovated and developed mechanisms to achieve the goal of making this country more energy efficient.

Despite improvements in Indigenous well-being in recent decades, significant gaps remain with the non-Indigenous population. This study focuses on four priority issues to maximise the potential of Indigenous economies in Canada.

In Doing Politics Differently? leading researchers from across the country assess the track records of eleven premiers, including their impact on policies of particular interest to women and their influence on the tenor of legislative debate and the recruitment of other women as party candidates, cabinet ministers, and senior bureaucrats. By comparing the performance of women leaders and then contrasting it with the men who preceded and succeeded them, this innovative volume probes the importance of demographic diversity in top public office using a variety of powerful analytic lenses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydraulic fracturing – fracking – is an unconventional extraction technique used in the oil and gas industry that has fundamentally transformed global energy politics. In Fracking Uncertainty, Heather Millar explains variation in Canadian provincial policy approaches, which range from pro-development regulation to moratoria and outright bans. Millar argues that although regulatory designs are shaped by governments’ desires to seek out economic benefits or protect against environmental harms, policy makers’ perceptions of said benefits and/or harms are mediated through socially constructed narratives about uncertainty and risk. Fracking Uncertainty offers in-depth case studies of regulatory development in British Columbia, Alberta, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. Drawing on media analysis and interviews with government officials, industry representatives, academics, and environmental advocates, Millar demonstrates how risk narratives foster distinctive forms of learning in each province, leading to different regulatory reforms.
