Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans are "healing themselves" (Heckler, 1985) and prevention has taken root (McGinnis, 1985a). We are altering our lifestyle to reduce physical and mental health risks. Perhaps as important is the fact that the science of prevention is beginning to catch up with the practices of prevention, although some might argue that the popularity of these practices far outstrips sound theoretical and empirical foundations. The chapter authors in this volume examine the theoretical and empirical foundations of many current prevention practices and, where data exist, discuss the status of prevention efforts. Where substantial prevention is not yet on the horizon, the authors attempt to point us in the right direction or at least share with the reader some of the risk factors that should be addressed in our research. We hope that readers will be stimulated to discuss the issues raised, advance the current research, and, where possible, adopt the prevention and health promotion strategies that are supported by sound theoretical and empirical work. This volume can in no way be comprehensive with respect to the current work in prevention; however, we hope that we have provided a sampling of prevention activities and issues that appear together in one volume for perhaps the first time. The primary intent of this volume is modest, and the reader should not attempt to find continuity among the various chapters. The only binding among these contributions is their focus on prevention.

Book Synopsis Trauma and Human Rights by : Lisa D. Butler
Download or read book Trauma and Human Rights written by Lisa D. Butler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-17 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights violations and traumatic events often comingle in victims’ experiences; however, the human rights framework and trauma theory are rarely deployed together to illuminate such experiences. This edited volume explores the intersection of trauma and human rights by presenting the development and current status of each of these frameworks, examining traumatic experiences and human rights violations across a range of populations and describing efforts to remediate them. Individual chapters address these topics among Native Americans, African Americans, children, women, lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender individuals, those with mental disabilities, refugees and asylees, and older adults, and also in the context of social policy and truth and reconciliation commissions. The authors demonstrate that the trauma and human rights frameworks each contribute invaluable and complementary insights, and that their integration can help us fully appreciate and address human suffering at both individual and collective levels.

Book Synopsis A History of the Division of Psychoanalysis of the American Psychological Associat by : Robert C. Lane
Download or read book A History of the Division of Psychoanalysis of the American Psychological Associat written by Robert C. Lane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1909, G. Stanley Hall, the founder of the American Psychological Association, invited Sigmund Freud, Sandor Ferenczi, Carl Jung, and Ernest Jones to Clark University to present their understanding of psychoanalysis. Although their presentations were enthusiastically received by many, the discrepancy with what was then considered the mainline American psychological thought was too great and the two fields remained separate. The formation of the Division of Psychoanalysis in 1979 -- seventy years later -- had as a major goal a rapprochement between psychoanalysis and psychology. Analytically trained psychologists and those seeking training have responded with enthusiasm to the formation of the Division, which now numbers 3,500 members in thirteen short years. This volume records the history of the Division and the seminal contributions of its founding members. It describes the dynamic tensions that have existed over the years between differing clinical and theoretical concepts of psychoanalysis leading to creative dialogue.
