Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a close study of four novels by Boris Vian. It aims to show how L'Écume des jours, L'Automne à Pékin, L'Herbe rouge and L'Arrache-coeur form a unified and coherent tetralogy. By establishing close links between these four texts, it becomes possible to achieve a more comprehensive understanding, not only of the significance of the tetralogy in exposing a complex and multi-layered novelistic strategy at the heart of the vianesque, but of the individual novels as autonomous creations. An examination of the novels reveals that they are not merely joined to one another via a superficial network of textual similarities (that which I refer to as intratextuality), but that this intertwining is emblematic of a common method of narrative construction. Each Vian novel is dependent, for a thorough understanding of the text to be possible, upon the multiple lines of external influence running through it. The sources of this influence (which I refer to as intertextuality) are located in various major texts of twentieth century literature, anglophone as well as francophone. Thus, in each instance the narrative is driven by a complicated interaction of intratextuality and intertextuality.

In this volume the term is used in a broader sense that more or less coincides with the traditional notion of versification . Understood this way, metrics is an eminently complex object that displays variation over time and in space, that concerns forms of a great variety and with different statuses (meters, rhymes, stanzas, prescribed forms, syllabification rules, nursery rhymes, slogans, musical textsetting, ablaut reduplication etc.), and that as a cultural manifestation is performed in a variety of ways (sung, chanted, spoken, read) that can have direct consequences on how it is structured. This profusion of forms is thought to correspond, at the level of perception, to a limited number of cognitive mechanisms that allow us to perceive and to represent regularly iterating forms. This volume proposes a relatively coherent overall vision by distinguishing four main families of metrical forms, each clearly independent of the others and amenable to separate typologies."

Book excerpt: Jean-Luc Beauchard, a Jesuit priest and philosophy professor, leaves both the priesthood and the academy to care for his sister after her mental collapse. Yet Beauchard's own sanity is tested when he finds himself not only struggling to deal with his sister's psychosis but caught in the middle of the increasingly violent drug war taking place on the streets around him. Meanwhile, Lucian Bernardo, whose release from prison just happens to coincide with the recent uptick in gang violence, takes an interest in Beauchard's philosophy. Desperate to justify his beliefs and make sense of his conflicted nature, Bernardo seeks out Beauchard and questions him the only way he knows how--over the barrel of a gun. A work of gothic literary fiction in the tradition of Faulkner, O'Connor, and McCarthy, The Philosopher King is a book about faith and doubt, violence, madness, and the things that try the human soul.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lyrical, tragic, and hauntingly beautiful, Tender is the Night absorbs F. Scott Fitzgerald’s personal struggles and mirrors the incredible writer’s fractured marriage. Dick Diver is a talented, successful young psychiatrist. He lives with his wife and patient, Nicole, on the French Riviera. Set in the glamour and disillusionment of the Jazz Age, this novel follows the Divers as a beautiful actress enters their lives and highlights the dark delicacy of their marriage. Heavily influenced by Fitzgerald’s own relationship, the Divers’ romantic charade begins to crumble as Dick descends into alcoholism and Nicole struggles with her mental health. From one of the greatest American novelists of the Jazz Age, Tender is the Night was F. Scott Fitzgerald’s final novel. First published in 1934, this poetic masterpiece captures the hope, idealism, and corruption of the Roaring 20s.

Book excerpt: Escape Route An ironic comedy in which an affluent New York book publisher and her chauffeur companion are stranded overnight in an isolated farmhouse with a French Canadian widow, her schoolteacher son and adolescent grandson. A contest of wills over the grandson's future ensues between his grandmother, his uncle, the visiting couple, and the boy's high school English teacher, with individual hopes and fears creating unpredictable results for all concerned. Interior Landscape A drama about the friendship and interdependencies of three older women, friends for over forty years, who are brought together by the onset of Alzheimer's in one of them. The hopes and dreams of their youth are now submerged in sometimes petty jealousies but their need for each other forges a bond stronger than what they had in their youth. It is a drama about loyalty, regrets and women's attachments to each other, and the exclusion of husbands and sons from the professional demands of their women.
