Book excerpt: The problem addressed by this report is that the Air Force is not getting full value for the resources expended in the development of finite element models of USAF aircraft structures, both directly and by contractors. Models developed by airframe contractors are usually not made available to the Air Force. Models that are available are often inadequately documented or verified, or their existence may be unknown to those who need them. The problem was assessed by a survey of Air Force organizations and was attacked in three ways. First, software called FEM-X was developed for storage and retrieval of finite element model data along with descriptive information about the data. The software could be used by an Air Force Finite Element Model Center. A proposal for establishment of this Center is the second aspect of modification, and distribution of aircraft models. The third subject addressed by the report is a Mil Standard that is proposed for delivery of finite element models by Air Force contractors.

Book excerpt: The feasibility of establishing a centralized facility for acquiring, storing, and distributing finite element models used by the United States Air Force is investigated. Through contacts with potential finite element users, the nature of usage within the technical community is characterized. The cost-effectiveness of servicing user needs through a centralized facility is investigated. The technical approach, software, and hardware for operating the center is studied. It is concluded that such a center would be feasible and cost-effective. Finite element (FE) methods are widely recognized as the primary means of analyzing the structural integrity of aircraft. These methods evolved from rare uses in the mid-1960s to general usage in the 1970s to virtually universal usage in the 1980s; thus, the existence and completeness of FE models to confirm design adequacy for an existing aircraft is highly dependent on the aircraft vintage. However, the structural integrity of future aircraft can be expected to be supported by rather complete hierarchy FE models. At least the first generation of these models for a new aircraft is developed during the design phase of the aircraft life cycle. (KR).

The method uses the super element developed by Tong to model the cracked panel with rivet holes, springs to model the rivets, and regular finite elements to model the doubler. The super element accurately models the crack and rivet holes of the skin while the regular finite element method provides the versatility to take into account the variety of doubler designs. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of this approach, and to compare different doubler designs.
