Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the principle goal to emphasize the development and promotion of new and renewable energy sources, adapted to the socio economic needs of rural population in developing countries. European Cooperative Network on Rural Energy (CNRE) paid particular atention to the so called "thermal effluents" use in agriculture. To find how much the development and use of such energy sources are interesting for developing countries, one Technical Consultation and two Workshops were organized. Very interesting scientific papers and practical experiences presented at the meetings, justified establishment of two working groups (or Networks) to cover the problematics: Industrial Thermal Effluments Use in Agriculture and Geothermal Energy Use in Agriculture, coordinated by Prof. Dr. L.A. Aires Barros and leaded by the Networks Chairmen Dr. T. O'Flaherty and Dr. K. Popovski, respectively. Even the economical conditions are not so positive, as they were during the times until 1982, the results of first three years of collaboration in the frame of Networks are justifying the statement that these two groups of energy and promising between all other alternative energy sources. That is particularly the case with Geothermal Energy Use in Agriculture Network, in which the initial membership arised from initial 14 to over 70 in three years, only. A bulk of informations and experiences about geothermal energy resources and technologies of use in agriculture are already collected. Very much of them are of local, but some are of general interest for participating countries. The task of the Network activity in near future shall be to make them useful there, where are necessary. New edition of the FAO Regional office for Europe "Rural Energy Country Review" is enabling the presentation of summaries of informations about geothermal energy resources, present status of application, characteristics of used technologies, positive and negative experiences and prospectives for improving geothermal energy use in agriculture. Wider circulation of informations is enabling to spread reached "know-how" of different countries, but also to find good possibilities for application of own one. Presentation of present status and prospectives of geothermal energy use in agriculture in Turkey is choosen because of two reasons: It is recognized that between all European countries Turkey has probably the most promising geothermal energy potential in good correlation with the needs of agriculture; and it is the hosting country of the Joint Workshop of Geothermal Energy Use in Agriculture and Solar Heating of Greenhouses Networks, from 11th to 14th of April 1988, just after the edition of the first number of Rural Energy Country Review.

For millennia natural sources of this energy, in the form of thermal springs, have been used by populations for heating, cooking and bathing. Modern-day usage has been extended to electricity generation from binary cycle power plants, heat extraction from geothermal heat pumps and use in greenhouses for industrial crop growing. Perspectives for Geothermal Energy in Europe highlights the status of geothermal energy in countries where natural sources of this energy are available. It concludes with a presentation of current geothermal policy and regulations within Europe, and discussion of how this fits in with the EU Energy and Climate Framework.Suitable for students, academics and practitioners in the fields of energy studies, geology and the earth sciences, electrical engineering and environmental economics, this book is the first comprehensive review of the practicalities of geothermal extraction and use in Europe.

Book excerpt: "Agriculture and agro-industry are important sectors in the economies of most developing countries, where they provide the main source of livelihoods for the majority of the poor. The lack of a sustainable supply of affordable energy is a major constraint to the development of these sectors in developing countries. Traditionally, geothermal energy has been utilized mainly to generate electricity; however, it can be harnessed for other important uses in agriculture and agro-industry. Developing countries endowed with this renewable energy source have ample potential to use it in advancing their agriculture and agro-industry sectors. This book reviews the use of geothermal energy in agriculture and agro-industry around the world. With a simple format and copious illustrations and models, the book is accessible to a wide range of interested readers, including those with no technical background. It shows that geothermal resources have the potential to provide long-term, secure energy for the agriculture and food industry in both developed and developing countries. Constraints and challenges that should be addressed before this potential can be fully achieved are also discussed."--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: This book highlights the importance of geothermal energy by studying its potential either alone or in combination with solar energy, focusing on its industrial application. Its starting point is to identify in a thorough and precise manner the barriers that hinder the implementation of geothermal energy in Spain and the European Union and the measures to be taken to achieve its diffusion and regular use. Next, the book looks at how geothermal energy could contribute to this sector and to the desalination industry in particular, analysing a specific case in the south of Spain and extrapolating its results to a set of existing desalination plants in the Spanish Mediterranean with really interesting results in terms of economic amortisation and CO2 emissions avoided to the atmosphere. Beyond the desalination industry, this work demonstrates that almost 85% of the industrial processes of all industry in Spain can be carried out with very low, low and medium temperature geothermal resources and even applies its results to a set of existing solar plants, comparing in economic terms the results already obtained with those that would have been obtained if geothermal energy had been applied.

Book excerpt: The agri-food chain consumes about one third of the world’s energy production with about 12% of it for crop production and nearly 80% for processing, distribution, retail, preparation and cooking. The agri-food chain also accounts for 80-90% of total global freshwater use where 70% alone is for irrigation. Additionally, on a global scale, freshwater production consumes nearly 15% of the entire energy production. It can therefore be argued that making agriculture and the agri-food supply chain independent from fossil fuel use has a huge potential to contribute to global food security and climate protection not only for the next decades but also for the coming century. Provision of secure, accessible and environmentally sustainable supplies of water, energy and food must thus be a priority. One of the major objectives of the world’s scientists, farmers, decisions makers and industrialists is to overcome the present dependence on fossil fuels in the agro-food sector. This dependency increases the volatility of food prices and affects economic access to sustenance. This book provides a critical review of recent developments in solar, wind and geothermal energy applications in agriculture and the agro-food sector such as processing, distribution, retail, preparation and cooking.

Book excerpt: Three and a half years of collaboration in the frame of the FAO/CNRE Networks on Rural Energy - Network on Agricultural Use of Thermal Effluents, with active participation of a great number of the European scientific institutes, scientists and experts, resulted with rich information exchange and consultations about the present status of the explorations, investigations and experiences with the commercial use of thermal effluents in agriculture, particularly for heating greenhouses. Short review of the State of the Art of the problematics and recent progress of the consisting parts of characteristical technological chains for geothermal energy and industrial thermal effluents use for heating greenhouses in different climatical, economical and social conditions of the FAO European and some Mediterranean countries of Africa and Near East, is given in the paper. New area for further investigations in near future are identified, too. Particular attention is paid to the heat exchange installations, developed for low-temperature heating medium use and the climatical and horticultural consequences of it for the most known vegetable cultures. Possible contribution of the FAO/CNRE Network in the activities for wider introduction of thermal effluents use in agriculture, and particularly for heating greenhouses, is stressed at the end of this introduction paper.

Book excerpt: In 2021, the United Nations Secretary-General will convene the Food Systems Summit to advance dialogue and action towards transforming the way the world produces, consumes and thinks about food guided by the overarching vision of a fairer, more sustainable world. The Secretary-General will also convene the High-Level Dialogue on Energy (HLDE) to promote the implementation of the energy-related goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Given the inextricable linkages between the energy and agriculture sectors, integrating the nexus perspective within the FSS and the HLDE is crucial to formulate a joint vision of actions to advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement. In this context, IRENA and FAO have decided to jointly develop a report on the role of renewable energy used in food chain to advance energy and food security as well as climate action towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement. While energy has a key enabling role in food system transformation and innovation in agriculture, its current use is unsustainable because of the high dependence on fossil fuels and frequent access to energy in developing countries. The challenge is to disconnect fossil fuel use from food system transformation without hampering food security. The use of renewable energy in food systems offers vast opportunities to address this challenge and help food systems meet their energy needs while advancing rural development while contributing to rural development and climate action.
