Book excerpt: Today, switched reluctance machines (SRMs) play an increasingly important role in various sectors due to advantages such as robustness, simplicity of construction, low cost, insensitivity to high temperatures, and high fault tolerance. They are frequently used in fields such as aeronautics, electric and hybrid vehicles, and wind power generation. This book is a comprehensive resource on the design, modeling, and control of SRMs with methods that demonstrate their good performance as motors and generators.

Book excerpt: The birth of this monograph is partly due to the persistent efforts of the General Editor, Dr. Klaus Timmerhaus, to persuade the authors that they encapsulate their forty or fifty years of struggle with the thermal properties of materials into a book before they either expired or became totally senile. We recognize his wisdom in wanting a monograph which includes the closely linked properties of heat capacity and thermal expansion, to which we have added a little 'cement' in the form of elastic moduli. There seems to be a dearth of practitioners in these areas, particularly among physics postgraduate students, sometimes temporarily alleviated when a new generation of exciting materials are found, be they heavy fermion compounds, high temperature superconductors, or fullerenes. And yet the needs of the space industry, telecommunications, energy conservation, astronomy, medical imaging, etc. , place demands for more data and understanding of these properties for all classes of materials - metals, polymers, glasses, ceramics, and mixtures thereof. There have been many useful books, including Specific Heats at Low Tempera tures by E. S. Raja Gopal (1966) in this Plenum Cryogenic Monograph Series, but few if any that covered these related topics in one book in a fashion designed to help the cryogenic engineer and cryophysicist. We hope that the introductory chapter will widen the horizons of many without a solid state background but with a general interest in physics and materials.

Book excerpt: Completely revised and updated, this text provides an easy-to-read guide to the concept of mass spectrometry and demonstrates its potential and limitations. Written by internationally recognised experts and utilising "real life" examples of analyses and applications, the book presents real cases of qualitative and quantitative applications of mass spectrometry. Unlike other mass spectrometry texts, this comprehensive reference provides systematic descriptions of the various types of mass analysers and ionisation, along with corresponding strategies for interpretation of data. The book concludes with a comprehensive 3000 references. This multi-disciplined text covers the fundamentals as well as recent advance in this topic, providing need-to-know information for researchers in many disciplines including pharmaceutical, environmental and biomedical analysis who are utilizing mass spectrometry

Book excerpt: Physicochemical Measurements: Catalogue of Reference Materials from National Laboratories offers information on chemicals, including their density, magnetic susceptibility, calorimetry, molecular conductance, and thermal conductivity. The catalog first offers information on acidimetry, calorimetry, and spectrophotometry and tristimulus colorimetry. The chemicals examined include potassium hydrogen, boric and benzoic acids, heptane, neopentane, and aluminum oxide. The text then presents data on density, dielectric constants, differential thermal analysis, magnetic susceptibility, and molar conductance. The chemicals evaluated include cyclohexane, kerosene, toluene, chlorobenzene, carbon tetrachloride, potassium nitrate, indium, tin, aluminum, platinum, and potassium chloride. The book discusses the molecular weight of polymers, refractive index, relative humidity, specular spectral reflectance, and surface tension. The text also takes a look at thermal conductivity and emissivity and vapor pressure. The catalog is a dependable reference for readers interested in the composition, characteristics, and reactions of chemicals.

Book excerpt: The two-volume set Lectures on QCD provides an introductory overview of Quantum Chromodynamics, the theory of strong interactions. In a series of pedagogically written articles based on lectures given over the years to graduate students, the fundamentals of QCD are discussed and significant application areas are described. The field-theoretic basis of QCD is the focus of the first volume, while the application of QCD to the phenomenology of strong interactions forms the subject of the second volume.

Book excerpt: This volume serves as a proteomics reference manual, describing experimental design and execution. The book also shows a large number of examples as to what can be achieved using proteomics techniques. As a relatively young area of scientific research, the breadth and depth of the current state of the art in proteomics might not be obvious to all potential users. There are various books and review articles that cover certain aspects of proteomics but they often lack technical details. Subject specific literature also lacks the broad overviews that are needed to design an experiment in which all steps are compatible and coherent. The objective of this book was to create a proteomics manual to provide scientists who are not experts in the field with an overview of: 1. The types of samples can be analyzed by mass spectrometry for proteomics analysis. 2. Ways to convert biological or ecological samples to analytes ready for mass spectral analysis. 3. Ways to reduce the complexity of the proteome to achieve better coverage of the constituent proteins. 4. How various mass spectrometers work and different ways they can be used for proteomics analysis 5. The various platforms that are available for proteomics data analysis 6. The various applications of proteomics technologies in biological and medical sciences This book should appeal to anyone with an interest in proteomics technologies, proteomics related bioinformatics and proteomics data generation and interpretation. With the broad setup and chapters written by experts in the field, there is information that is valuable for students as well as for researchers who are looking for a hands on introduction into the strengths, weaknesses and opportunities of proteomics.
