This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The birth of this monograph is partly due to the persistent efforts of the General Editor, Dr. Klaus Timmerhaus, to persuade the authors that they encapsulate their forty or fifty years of struggle with the thermal properties of materials into a book before they either expired or became totally senile. We recognize his wisdom in wanting a monograph which includes the closely linked properties of heat capacity and thermal expansion, to which we have added a little 'cement' in the form of elastic moduli. There seems to be a dearth of practitioners in these areas, particularly among physics postgraduate students, sometimes temporarily alleviated when a new generation of exciting materials are found, be they heavy fermion compounds, high temperature superconductors, or fullerenes. And yet the needs of the space industry, telecommunications, energy conservation, astronomy, medical imaging, etc. , place demands for more data and understanding of these properties for all classes of materials - metals, polymers, glasses, ceramics, and mixtures thereof. There have been many useful books, including Specific Heats at Low Tempera tures by E. S. Raja Gopal (1966) in this Plenum Cryogenic Monograph Series, but few if any that covered these related topics in one book in a fashion designed to help the cryogenic engineer and cryophysicist. We hope that the introductory chapter will widen the horizons of many without a solid state background but with a general interest in physics and materials.
Book Synopsis Thermal Properties of Solids at Room and Cryogenic Temperatures by : Guglielmo Ventura
Download or read book Thermal Properties of Solids at Room and Cryogenic Temperatures written by Guglielmo Ventura and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-23 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The minimum temperature in the natural universe is 2.7 K. Laboratory refrigerators can reach temperatures in the microkelvin range. Modern industrial refrigerators cool foods at 200 K, whereas space mission payloads must be capable of working at temperatures as low as 20 K. Superconducting magnets used for NMR work at 4.2 K. Hence the properties of materials must be accurately known also at cryogenic temperatures. This book provides a guide for engineers, physicists, chemists, technicians who wish to approach the field of low-temperature material properties. The focus is on the thermal properties and a large spectrum of experimental cases is reported. The book presents updated tables of low-temperature data on materials and a thorough bibliography supplements any further research. Key Features include: ° Detailed technical description of experiments ° Description of the newest cryogenic apparatus ° Offers data on cryogenic properties of the latest new materials ° Current reference review

The book provides an important opportunity for students to learn the core concepts of physics and understand how those concepts apply to their lives and to the world around them. Due to the comprehensive nature of the material, we are offering the book in three volumes for flexibility and efficiency. Coverage and Scope Our University Physics textbook adheres to the scope and sequence of most two- and three-semester physics courses nationwide. We have worked to make physics interesting and accessible to students while maintaining the mathematical rigor inherent in the subject. With this objective in mind, the content of this textbook has been developed and arranged to provide a logical progression from fundamental to more advanced concepts, building upon what students have already learned and emphasizing connections between topics and between theory and applications. The goal of each section is to enable students not just to recognize concepts, but to work with them in ways that will be useful in later courses and future careers. The organization and pedagogical features were developed and vetted with feedback from science educators dedicated to the project. Book Synopsis Negative Thermal Expansion Materials by : D.J. Fisher
Download or read book Negative Thermal Expansion Materials written by D.J. Fisher and published by Materials Research Forum LLC. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In everyday life, minute thermally-induced elongations are essentially invisible to the naked eye; but even minute expansions can fatally degrade device processing and performance in – for example – the semiconductor industry. Materials which, astonishingly, contract upon heating offer the great advantage of being able to tune the overall thermal expansion of composite materials or to act as thermal-expansion compensators. The development of these negative thermal expansion materials has advanced rapidly during the past fifteen years, and a wide variety of materials of differing types has now been identified, as well as a number of intriguing mechanisms which help to avoid the apparent inviolable tendency of size to increase with temperature. The present work is the most up-to-date summary of the current range of negative thermal expansion materials and of the associated mechanisms. Negative Thermal Expansion Materials, Thermomiotic Behavior, Thermal Stress-Fracture, Thermal Expansion of Composites, Thin-Film Design, Metamaterials

Book Synopsis Low-Temperature Properties of Polymers by : I. Perepechko
Download or read book Low-Temperature Properties of Polymers written by I. Perepechko and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-Temperature Properties of Polymers systematizes the available materials on polymers. This book also describes the main trends in the investigation of interrelated properties of polymers, such as thermal (heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and thermal expansion), acoustical, dielectric, and viscoelastic, which maintain the physical properties of polymers at low temperatures. Comprised of nine chapters, this book first covers heat capacity of polymers at low temperature, and then tackles thermal conductivity of polymers at low temperatures. Chapter 3 discusses thermal expansion of polymers at low temperatures, and Chapter 4 tackles electrical properties of polymers at low temperatures. The fifth chapter covers nuclear magnetic resonance in polymers at low temperature, while the succeeding chapter encompasses dynamic mechanical properties of polymers at low temperatures. Chapter 7 concerns itself with the acoustical properties of polymers at low temperatures, while the succeeding chapter covers viscoelastic parameters of polymers at low temperatures. The closing chapter covers how to determine the thermophysical characteristics of polymers by acoustic measurement at helium temperature. This book will be of great interest to researchers or professionals whose line of work involves the manipulation and understanding of the properties of polymers.
Book Synopsis Thermophysical Properties of Materials by : G. Grimvall
Download or read book Thermophysical Properties of Materials written by G. Grimvall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-09-22 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a thoroughly revised version of the original book published in 1986. About half of the contents of the previous version remain essentially unchanged, and one quarter has been rewritten and updated. The rest consists of completely new and extended material. Recent research has focussed on new materials made through "molecular engineering", and computational materials science through ab initio electron structure calculations. Another trend is the ever growing interdisciplinary aspect of both basic and applied materials science. There is an obvious need for reviews that link well established results to the modern approaches. One purpose of this book is to provide such an overview in a specific field of materials science, namely thermophysical phenomena that are intimately connected with the lattice vibrations of solids. This includes, e.g., elastic properties and electrical and thermal transport. Furthermore, this book attempts to present the results in such a form that the reader can clearly see their domain of applicability, for instance if and how they depend on crystal structure, defects, applied pressure, crystal anisotropy etc. The level and presentation is such that the results can be immediately used in research. Graduate students in condensed matter physics, metallurgy, inorganic chemistry or geophysical materials will benefit from this book as will theoretical physicists and scientists in industrial research laboratories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of High Temperature Superconductivity and the increasing reliability of fabrication techniques, superconductor technology has moved firmly into the mainstream of academic and industrial research. There is currently no single source of practical information giving guidance on which technique to use for any particular category of superconductor. An increasing number of materials scientists and electrical engineers require easy access to practical information, sensible advice and guidance on 'best-practice' and reliable, proven fabrication and characterisation techniques. The Handbook will be the definitive collection of material describing techniques for the fabrication and analysis of superconducting materials. In addition to the descriptions of techniques, authoritative discussions written by leading researchers will give guidance on the most appropriate technique for a particular situation.Characterisation and measurement techniques will form an important part of the Handbook, providing researchers with a standard reference for experimental techniques. The tutorial style description of these techniques makes the Handbook particularly suitable for use by graduate students. The Handbook will be supported by a comprehensive web site which will be updated with new data as it emerges. The Handbook has six main sections: -- Fundamentals of Superconductivity - characteristic properties, elementary theory, critical current of type II superconductors-- Processing - bulk materials, wires and tapes, thick and think films, contact techniques-- Characterisation Techniques - structure/microstructure, measurement and interpretation of electromagnetic properties, measurement of physics properties-- Materials - characteristic properties of low and high Tc materials-- Applications - high current applications, trapped flux devices, high frequency devices, josephson junction devic
