Book excerpt: The airworthiness evaluation of the UH-60A helicopter configured with the External Stores Support System (ESSS) and 16 HELLFIRE (4 HMMS) missiles installed was conducted at the Sikorsky flight test facility at West Palm Beach, Fl (elevation 28 feet). A total of 16.2 productive hours during 18 flights were flown between 21 May and 3 June 1987. Tests were conducted to determine handling qualities and performance of the UH-60A in the 16 HELLFIRE (4 HMMS) missile system configuration at an average mission gross weight of 17,000 pounds. The handling qualities of the UH-60A with the 16 HELLFIRE (4 HMMS) missile system installed were essentially unchanged from those previously reported for the UH- 60A in the normal utility configuration. The equivalent flat plate area of the 16 HELLFIRE (4 HMMS) missile system was determined to be 11 square feet over that of the UH-60A in the ESSS only configuration. One miscellaneous observation was made regarding the initial installation and fit of the production ESSS fairings. Keywords: Helicopters; Air to surface missiles; Guided missile launchers; Handling qualities/ HELLFIRE modular missile system; Performance decrement.

Book excerpt: The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity supported a contractor engineering effort to correct the nose-down pitch-over during takeoff and the large, variable position error in the low-speed flight regime of the UH-60A (Black Hawk) helicopter. A Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation was then conducted with the improved airspeed and stabilator systems in their final configuration as defined by the contractor. Handling qualities and airspeed system characteristics were evaluated for two modified overhead and one nose probe configuration. In addition, airspeed system tests were conducted on a second nose probe configuration. Four shortcomings applicable to the modified overhead probe systems were identified as follows: (1) the annoying longitudinal control, stabilator angle, and indicated airspeed reversals resulting in pitch attitude oscillations during takeoff (upgraded from a deficiency in the standard production aircraft); (2) the high pilot workload required to maintain precise airspeed during transitions to high power, low airspeed climbs; (3) the large, variable airspeed position errors; and (4) unreliable airspeed indications in low airspeed, high power climbs. For the modified overhead probe systems the following should be accomplished: (1) evaluate the proposed installation on the External Stores Support System UH-60 helicopter, and (2) evaluate the proposed installation on an extremely light gross weight UH-60 helicopter.

Book excerpt: Testing was conducted to determine the effects of the installation of the External Fuel System (EFS) on the performance and handling qualities of the UH-60A helicopter. A total of 27 productive flight hours were flown at Edwards Air Force Base, California between 21 March and 20 May 1988. The evaluation did not reveal any problems that should preclude airworthiness qualification. The installation of the EFS with two 230-gallon tanks caused an increase in power required to hover in ground effect (10-foot wheel height) and out of ground effect of approximately 5 percent and 6 percent, respectively. The change in equivalent flat plate area in the EFS configuration with two 230-gallon tanks varied from 6.2 to 12.4 square feet when compared to the UH-60A in the normal utility configuration. The drag of the UH-60A in the EFS configuration with two 230-gallon tanks is significantly increased when the cargo doors and gunner windows are open. Three shortcomings and two Prime Item Development Specification noncompliances were identified during the handling qualities evaluation of the UH-60A in the EFS configuration. Two of the shortcomings have been noted during previous evaluations of the UH-60A in the normal utility configuration. Handling qualities were not significantly different than those of the UH-60A in the normal utility configuration. Keywords: External fuel tanks; Helicopters; Aerodynamics; External fuel system, UH-60A helicopter. (kt).

Book excerpt: A limited artificial and natural icing evaluation of the production UH-60A Black Hawk helicopter equipped with an External Stores Support System (ESSS) and selected components of a prototype Wire Strike Protection System (WSPS) was conducted to determine the capability to operate safely in a moderate icing environment. Testing was performed by the United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity and consisted of 23.6 productive flight hours. The UH-60A helicopter configured with the ESSS can safely operate in icing condition through the moderate level of intensity. The probability of rotating component foreign object damage (FOD), due to impact with shed ice particles, is increased with the installation of the WSPS. The probability of engine FOD, due to ice ingestion, is increased with the installation of the improved airspeed system pitot-static tube support strut fairings or wedges. Three major shortcomings were identified: (1) the large ice accretions on the WSPS components which subsequently shed and cause FOD to the aircraft; (2) the large ice accretions on the forward portion of the improved airspeed system pitot static tube support strut fairings or wedges; as installed with the improved airspeed system fairings or wedges.

Book excerpt: Preliminary airworthiness flight tests were conducted at West Palm Beach, FL, (elevation 28 feet). Tests totaling 22.4 hours of productive flight time were conducted to determine handling qualities and performance of the UH- 60A in the VOLCANO system configuration at an average mission gross weight of 20,500 pounds and a longitudinal center of gravity at fuselage station 351.0 The handling qualities of the UH-60A with the VOLCANO system, installed were similar to the normal utility UH-60A. Three shortcomings were noted in this configuration: 1) the increased frequency and magnitude of 'tail shake' with the VOLCANO installed; 2) the position error for the ship's airspeed system was increased by approximately 8 knots at higher speeds (120 KCAS) due to the installation of the VOLCANO mine dispensing system; and 3) Stability Augmentation System (SAS) OFF dynamic response, not attributed to the VOLCANO installation, was aperiodic and divergent. The UH-60A helicopter with VOLCANO failed to meet two requirements of the Prime Item Development Specification; however, these noncompliances were not significant. Recommendations were made to incorporate data into the applicable portion of the VOLCANO operator's manual and to conduct additional testing. Keywords: Flight testing; Aerial mine dispensers; Helicopters.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation was conducted for the AH-64A equipped with the Air-to-Air Stinger (ATAS) missile system. The first phase was an evaluation of the effects of the ATAS installation on the handling qualities on the AH-64A. The second phase was a human factors evaluation of the installation of a fully operational preproduction ATAS system using captive flight training Stinger missiles, Tests were flown in the eight Hellfire missile configuration. Two Stinger missiles with launcher and mounting hardware were mounted at each wing tip. Test results were compared with data obtained during previous testing and evaluated against the AH-64 System Specification. Handling qualities of the AH-64A with the ATAS system installed were quantitatively and qualitatively evaluated and found to be essentially the same as the basic AH- 64A. Specific shortcomings associated with the ATAS system were: poor integration of the Air-to-Air Stinger missile system, which is not directly compatible with the MIL STD 1553 data bus of the AH-64; insufficient ATAS sighting symbology, which does not provide the copilot/gunner with accurate missile seeker line of sight relative to the selected sight line of sight except in FLIR wide field of view; reduction in storage space imposed by the ATAS installation in the aft storage bay; location of the repositioned chaff fire switch on the cyclic hand grip; and the manual reset feature of the ATAS missile sequencing logic. The absence of an altitude encoding feature in the installation of the AN/APX-100(V) transponder was a shortcoming not associated with the ATAS modification. Seven recommendations specific to the ATAS installation are made.

Book excerpt: The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted a Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of the EH-1H Helicopter Quick Fix Phase 1A to determine the effects of the installation of the AN/ARQ-33 radio countermeasures system and its associated equipment on aircraft handling qualities. The helicopter was tested from 18 through 23 August 1977 at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. During the tests, nine flights totaling 8.5 productive flight hours were flown. The handling qualities of the EH-1H helicopter were determined to be satisfactory with the exception of inadequate directional control in right sideward flight. An enhancing characteristic noted was the simultaneous antenna retraction systems. Inadequate directional control at right sideward velocities between 5 and 15 knots true airspeed was a deficiency. Two shortcomings were noted: the susceptibility to damage of the right FM 10-120 homing antenna during preflight/maintenance operations and the susceptibility to damage of the FM 10-242 communications antenna during running takeoff/landing maneuvers. Book excerpt: The US Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted an evaluation to determine the increase in power required and the change in handling qualities due to the installation of the AN/ALQ-151(V)2 countermeasures system and associated mission equipment on the UH-60A helicopter. Testing conducted between 23 May 27 June 1984 totaled 12.4 hours. The addition of the Quick Fix System and associated mission equipment created an increase in equivalent flat plate area (F sub e) of 17 sq ft (ft2) for advance ratios (mu) of o.26 and greater. For mu's less than 0.26, the change in F sub e increased above 17 sq ft as a function of thrust coefficient. Handling qualities of the Quick Fix configured YEH-60A were unchanged from a normal utility configured UH-60A and were determined satisfactory. One deficiency, interference between the main rotor blades and the upper elements of the (no. 3 and no. 4) direction finding dipole antennas during ground taxi and four shortcomings were associated with the Quick Fix configuration. Keywords: Equivalent flat plate area; Handling qualities; Level flight performance; Quick Fix Configuration; YEH-60A helicopter.
