This book was released on 1978 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tests were conducted to determine the effects of installation of the IRS and the AN/ALQ-144 infrared jammer. There was no apparent effect on power required to hover and only a small increase in power required to maintain level flight. Because of a power-available degradation, however, there was a loss of 220 pounds payload in an out-of-ground-effect hover at 4000 feet, 35 C. Additionally, at 2000 feet, 25 c, and 9300 pounds gross weight, there was a reduction in maximum level flight airspeed of 3.5 knots true airspeed in the clean wing configuration. No degradation in handling qualities was caused by IRS or infrared jammer installation. However, one deficiency and six shortcomings inherent in the basic AH-1S were noted. The nonadjustable ventilation system is a deficiency because it blows dirt and dust into the pilot's eyes during operations from unprepared surfaces.

Book excerpt: The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted a Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of the AH-1S helicopter with OGEE tip-shape main rotor blades to determine if any improvement in performance or handling qualities resulted from replacing the K747 blades. Additionally, the acoustics signature of the OGEE blades were measured by the US Army Research and Technology Laboratories (Aeromechanics Lab). Tests were conducted at Edwards Air Force Base (elevation 2302 feet) and Coyote Flats (elevation 9980 feet), California from 1 November 1979 through 8 April 1980. Forty-five test flights were flown for a total of 36.6 productive hours (63.2 total hours). Both hover and level flight performance were degraded by installation of OGEE tip-shape main rotor blades. Low-speed handling qualities were unaffected by the OGEE blades. Other handling qualities tests were not accomplished. Results of acoustics tests will be reported by the laboratories under a separate cover. (Author).

Book excerpt: The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted a Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of the EH-1H Helicopter Quick Fix Phase 1A to determine the effects of the installation of the AN/ARQ-33 radio countermeasures system and its associated equipment on aircraft handling qualities. The helicopter was tested from 18 through 23 August 1977 at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. During the tests, nine flights totaling 8.5 productive flight hours were flown. The handling qualities of the EH-1H helicopter were determined to be satisfactory with the exception of inadequate directional control in right sideward flight. An enhancing characteristic noted was the simultaneous antenna retraction systems. Inadequate directional control at right sideward velocities between 5 and 15 knots true airspeed was a deficiency. Two shortcomings were noted: the susceptibility to damage of the right FM 10-120 homing antenna during preflight/maintenance operations and the susceptibility to damage of the FM 10-242 communications antenna during running takeoff/landing maneuvers. This book was released on 1978 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted a Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation (PAE) of a UH-1H helicopter equipped with a Multiple Target Electronic Warfare System (MULTEWS) from 13 August through 2 December 1977. The evaluation was conducted at Edwards Air Force Base, California, and required 45 flights for a total productive flight time of 41 hours. The test program was terminated when the test aircraft sustained major damage during height-velocity testing. The addition of the MULTEWS equipment to the UH-1H airframe caused significant degradation in performance and handling qualities. Changes in the operator's manual should be made to reflect the changes in performance for MULTEWS configured aircraft. The MULTEWS installation also generally degraded the vibration characteristics of the UH-1H, increased structural loads, increased the maintenance workload, and degraded aircraft crashworthiness. The degradation in performance and handling qualities as well as the excessive vibrations and structural loads in the MULTEWS configured aircraft were attributed to the extremely high drag and turbulent wake of the externally mounted MULTEWS components.

Book excerpt: The AH-1G helicopter with the HELLFIRE modular Missile System (HMMS) and the Airborne Target Acquisition Fire Control System (ATAFCS) is being used as a surrogate trainer for the YAH-64 helicopter. The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity was tasked to provide quantitative and qualitative data on the handling qualities of the helicopter, obtain limited level flight performance data, and obtain limited handling qualities of the helicopter with only the ATAFCS installed. The test helicopter was a production AH-1G helicopter (212 tail rotor) modified with an ATAFCS mockup and carrying eight HELLFIRE missiles. Six productive flight test hours were flown in six flights. No shortcomings or deficiencies attributable to HMMS and ATAFCS installation were found. The AH-1G helicopter, with HMMS and ATAFCS installed, exhibits an additional equivalent flat plate area of 4.0 ft2 compared to the standard AH-1Q helicopter. The handling qualities of the helicopter with only the ATAFCS installed are essentially the same as the production AH-1G helicopter. (Author).

Book excerpt: The preliminary airworthiness evaluation of the UH-1H helicopter equipped with the receiver antenna of the Terrain Mapping Radar System was conducted in Lakehurst, New Jersey, between 21 November and 8 December 1986. The evaluation required 12 flights for a total of 14.8 hours, or which 12.0 hours were productive. Performance, handling qualities, and structural dynamic response tests were conducted. The modified UH-1H equipped with the receiver antenna demonstrated adequate handling qualities for the terrain mapping mission. However, the proposed mission profile requires extensive operation of the helicopter in an out-of-ground effect (OGE) hover. Although the handling qualities are acceptable, the degraded autorotational characteristics may preclude a safe autorotational landing in the event of a sudden engine failure at an OGE hover below 1000 feet above ground level. The minimum directional control margin and high pilot workload to maintain heading during low speed flight were a shortcoming. Three additional shortcomings were found during the evaluation.

This book was released on 1983 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This preliminary airworthiness evaluation was conducted on an OH-58C helicopter configured with a 3-axis digital stability control augmentation system (SCAS) and an improved tail rotor. Additional testing on the standard OH-58C equipped with the 3-axis SCAS was required in response to questions which surfaced during working sessions of the Joint Special Study Group investigating 0H-58 loss of tail rotor effectiveness. Testing was accomplished at Arlington, TX (elevation 630 feet), Leadville, CO (elev. 9927 feet) and Alamosa, CO (elev. 7535 feet). Test time totaled 44.2 productive flight test hours. With the improved tail rotor, adequate directional control margins were available for flight at all azimuths out to the wind limits (35 KTAS sideward and 30 KTAS rearward) of the aircraft at density altitudes up through 11,000 feet for a gross weight of 3,040 lb. The overall handling qualities of the OH-58C helicopter equipped with a 3-axis digital SCAS in either tail rotor configuration were significantly improved over the unaugmented aircraft configuration except as stated in the report. TWo handling quality deficiencies were noted.

This book was released on 1975 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted an Army Preliminary Evaluation of a JOH-58A helicopter painted with a low reflective paint and equipped with a prototype infrared countermeasure exhaust system from 1 July through 14 October 1975. The testing was conducted at Edwards Air Force Base and at Point Mugu Naval Air Station, California. Results of these tests were compared with test results from earlier evaluations of the OH-58A performance and handling qualities characteristics and with preliminary base-line testing performed during this evaluation. One deficiency and two shortcomings were noted during this evaluation. Although not classified as a deficiency or shortcoming, the most significant finding in this evaluation was the serious degradation in hover and level flight performance when the rotor blades are painted with low reflective paint.
