Book excerpt: When a child has a sibling with a disability, siblings must learn to adapt to additional challenges and demands and may often be overlooked by their parents, teachers, and service providers. While research has demonstrated that the social and emotional development of siblings of children with ASD is impacted in the context of their homes and families, the impact on siblings in the school setting has been minimally examined. Using the Sibling Embedded Systems Framework, this study assesses the relationship between micro and mesosystem factors in relation to school behavioral and academic outcomes for siblings of children with ASD using 1,500 families in the Simmons Simplex Collection. As part of a partnership with the Simmons Simplex Collection (SSC), de-identified data from the Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative (SFARI) that contains demographic information (i.e., race, ethnicity, gender, health insurance, medical history), developmental and behavior information, and blood samples (DNA) from parents and their children is analyzed. Descriptive analysis and bivariate analysis assess the distribution of variables across the dataset and associations between family and child characteristics with response variables. Multivariable analysis assesses associations between child, family, and home environment characteristics and siblings' total school problems and academic performance. The results showed that siblings of children with ASD had poorer academic performance and total problems in school when also displaying problem behaviors at home such as oppositional defiance and rule breaking. Findings from this study point to several important issues for clinicians and researchers working with families of individuals with ASD to consider.

Book excerpt: In the assessment of psychological functioning in youth, it is considered a gold standard to elicit information from multiple informants. However, agreement between informants is not perfect, typically falling in the moderate range. These discrepancies between informants reflect, in part, contextual variations in children's behavior. However, for typically developing (TD) youth, several variables predict these discrepancies, including child and parent demographic characteristics. Despite being widely studied in TD youth, few consistent predictors have been identified, which may be related to differences in methodology across studies. Additionally, limited information is currently available regarding predictors of informant agreement in youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study utilized data from the Simons Simplex Collection (SSC), which provided a large and well-characterized sample of youth with ASD and their TD siblings. Parent-teacher agreement was investigated on the Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA) and the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS). Agreement consistently fell in the moderate range for both scales. While parent-teacher agreement was higher for externalizing problems than internalizing problems for TD siblings, agreement was fairly consistent across these types of behavioral concerns for youth with ASD. Three types of parent-teacher discrepancy scores were investigated; the standardized difference score showed equivalent agreement with both parent and teacher original ratings, while the raw and residual difference scores showed differential agreement. A variety of clinical and demographic variables were considered as predictors of these discrepancy scores, and results varied across youth with ASD and their TD siblings. For children with ASD, child IQ, parent reported emotional and behavioral problems, and parent and teacher reported ASD symptoms predicted parent-teacher agreement on the ASEBA scales. On the SRS, child IQ, child receptive language, clinician rated ASD symptoms, adaptive behavior, and parent and teacher reported emotional and behavioral problems were significant predictors of parent-teacher agreement. For TD siblings, parent and teacher reported ASD symptoms, and parental race and education were the only consistent predictors of parent-teacher agreement on the ASEBA scales. On the SRS, child sex, child race, parent and teacher rated emotional and behavioral problems, parental education, and parental broader autism phenotype characteristics were predictors of parent-teacher agreement. This study highlights that the magnitude of parent-teacher agreement is similar across children with ASD and TD children, although patterns of agreement vary across these populations. Further, the factors that influence parent-teacher agreement on emotional and behavioral problems and ASD symptoms vary across children with ASD and TD children. This implies that past research in TD children cannot be simply extended to children with ASD, and further research is needed to clarify what factors are associated with informant agreement in children with ASD to identify when the use of multiple informants is the most critical. Findings in this study also suggest that rater bias impacts informant ratings for both children with ASD and their TD siblings; further research is warranted to understand how characteristics of the informant impact ratings of emotional and behavioral problems and ASD symptoms.

Book excerpt: For several decades, families of children with autism have been of interest to practitioners and researchers, with a growing body of literature focusing specifically on the psychosocial functioning of the healthy siblings in the family. Although there have been mixed findings across existing research studies examining the impact children with autism have on siblings, a number of studies have reported that siblings of children with autism experience greater psychosocial adjustment difficulties, thereby suggesting they are a group at risk for maladjustment. The current study examined the variability in siblings' psychosocial adjustment and prosocial behaviour with factors found to be important in the general population and developmental disability field. Furthermore, factors believed to be more specific to having a brother or sister with autism were explored to help determine those siblings at greater risk for psychosocial adjustment difficulties, in addition to those siblings demonstrating more prosocial behaviours. Participants included 72 siblings of children with autism between ages 7 to 14 years, as well as their parent and classroom teacher. Preliminary analyses confirmed variability in the functioning of siblings of children with autism, although the majority of siblings in the present study appeared to be well-adjusted. A minority of siblings were demonstrating substantial internalizing and/or externalizing behaviour problems, and low levels of prosocial behaviour. An analysis of variables predicting siblings' externalizing behaviour problems revealed different factors emerged as salient for parent versus teacher reports. While siblings were reported by parents to display fewer externalizing behaviour problems in the presence of lower levels of parental distress and higher levels of academic achievement, only siblings' global self-worth emerged as a significant predictor for teacher reports. For autism-specific variables, siblings' perception of the frequency of autistic and related behaviours was an important predictor for both parent and teacher reports of siblings' externalizing behaviour problems. None of the sibling or parent variables examined in the current study predicted parent or teacher reports of siblings' internalizing behaviour problems or prosocial behaviour. These findings are discussed with respect to their clinical implications, and directions for future research are presented.

However, the current research base indicates that children with autism may have an increased likelihood of experiencing deficits in EF or delayed developmental trajectories. Additionally, although there is ample evidence that neurotypical (NT) children undergo a "sensitive period" with high plasticity in EF development in early childhood, and continue to make progress up to early adolescence, it is unclear if such a window of opportunity applies to autistic children in the same way it does for their NT peers, and if the longitudinal trajectory of growth follows a parallel pattern. Study 1 used the Early Childhood Longitudinal Studies-Kindergarten Class of 2011 (ECLS-K: 2011), and unconditional latent growth models were built for working memory and cognitive flexibility to identify the period of high plasticity in EF skills in autistic children and how it differed from that of their NT peers. It further investigated the relationship between autistic children's initial status in EF skills upon entering kindergarten and their rates of growth throughout their elementary school life. Lastly, it examined how the degree of heterogeneity in autistic children in their EF performances changed over time, and how such changes differed from that of their NT peers. Findings from Study 1 indicate that both autistic and NT children make steeper gains during the first few years of elementary school, and the rates of growth slow down as they get older. However, autistic children appear to have a wider window for high plasticity than their NT peers. Further, autistic children's lower initial status on working memory upon entering kindergarten predicted a higher rate of growth during the last three years of elementary school only, while a lower initial status on cognitive flexibility predicted a higher rate of growth throughout their elementary school years. Lastly, while both autistic and NT children show greater heterogeneity in their EF performances when they are younger, the heterogeneity decreases as they approach their "plateauing" points. However, the overall degrees of heterogeneity were higher in the autistic children than their NT peers, which indicates some degree of continued heterogeneity in their growth during the later years of elementary school. As indicated in Study 1, EF in autistic children is highly malleable throughout their childhood, and current literature base supports that various student-level and environmental factors play important roles in their development. In Study 2, conditional latent growth models were built to identify possible predictors for autistic children's working memory and cognitive flexibility performance upon entering kindergarten and their relative growth throughout their elementary school years. Findings indicate that socioeconomic status (SES) and students' approaches to learning (ATL) positively predicted autistic children's working memory performance upon entering kindergarten. Having ADHD, receipt of special education services at school, and students' ATL positively predicted autistic children's rate of growth in working memory during the first three years of their elementary school years, while student-teacher relationship (STR) predicted their rate of growth in working memory during the last three years of their elementary school. In addition, STR and ATL positively predicted autistic children's cognitive flexibility performance upon entering kindergarten, while living in a bilingual home environment positively predicted their rate of growth in cognitive flexibility during the first three years of autistic children's elementary school years. Implications and future directions are discussed
